Base Builder Friday: February 9, 2024

in hey everyone um Welcome to our base Builder Friday super excited um sorry we weren't here last week last week was a little bit hectic and so we wanted to give ourselves a little bit more time to breathe um but excited to be back here we have I we have probably like you know 10 15 minutes of updates and then uh we'll we'll save it a bunch of time at the end for questions um and feel free to just jump in uh as we're going you can raise your hand you can just unic um gold B is just to kind of create connection cohesion between all of us and between folks who are Building on Base so um yeah feel free to jump in as we go so the first thing I want to just start off with um actually just agenda frames um we're g talk about what base is doing at East Denver just give a little preview before you tell the rest of the world um then we'll talk about some some devil updates um uh yeah some of the hiring we're doing um but before we dive into that official agenda I just want to highlight three things um that are very top of mind and exciting for me um the first is that yesterday or the day before base crossed a billion dollars of assets on platform um so assets on platform is the metric we use um it's the intersection of bridged assets I.E like eth from L1 and then natively issued assets um and so you know we started at zero six months ago we just crossed a billion um my my goal is 10 billion for the end of the year handedly I think we're going to crush that goal like we're going to blow out of the water and I'm I'm pushing towards like 20 30 40 billion um so you know don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves but it feels good to cross the building and excited to go further um the second thing is really in the last month um I think particularly driven by frames in the go to market we've run with frames active Builders which we measure um just by looking at people who are deploying smart contracts is growing very quickly um there's way more people building on base right now than there were a month ago I think this is just a like indicative of um us kind of having reached a little bit of a Tipping Point and turning point in terms of Mind share adoption uh for base and um Builders are everything uh everything in terms of growth is Downstream of people building and so that's super exciting for me to say for me to see and then the third thing is that and this is again Downstream of Builders we're just seeing an incredible amount of innovation on base right now I think frames is like a great example of this it's just people are building all of the coolest stuff that's happening on chain on base and we don't know which of those things is going to hit um and you know take millions of people on chain but it feels really exciting and like we're we're at the center of all of this creativity and Innovation happening so that's got me fired up um to dive into one of those places where I think a lot of that Innovation is happening forecaster frames um uh we think frames are a a catalyst for bringing more people on chain so when we saw frames three weeks ago we didn't have any pre-warning we learned about it just like all of y'all from a like cast from Dan and Brun but I think pretty immediately our team was um convinced and just pivoted on a dime that like this was the catalist and so we worked all weekend that weekend uh everyone's been working nights and weekends through then and we've been doing a bunch of things uh we built a bunch of Open Source tooling resources guides if you've seen zamia who's on the call here Taylor will Brian all of them have just been hustling to get better tools in the hands of frame Builders um we've run a bunch of Grants um so we've already distributed 20 we have another 10 going on right now for folks who are building frames and then we've also just been helping people run hackathons all around the world I think we've sent Pizza to like 15 or 20 different hackathons um in I think almost or in in every continent except for Antarctica um and so that's pretty cool to see the reach and we just did a frame where people could say hey we want to run a hackathon and we had like 5,000 people like we want to run a hackathon so we're sorting through how to manage that but uh you know our thesis is like give the builders pizza and coffee and cookies and they're going to create incredible things we want to support that so there's a bunch of resources here um we'll send out this deck afterwards so folks can click through but if you want to get started building frames um tons and tons of of resources that we've built to do that um grants like I talked about uh they're going through Monday but don't stress about getting things in by Monday we'll close this grants round on Monday and then we'll open another one um we just want to get resources into the hands of people who are building awesome frames um like I said the hackathon um we've been kind of supporting folks running them uh this is the frame we published they solicit that in in interest and you can submit there or you can just DM me or or the team um and we'll help you get pizza if you want to host something and so so I guess my last my last call out is like it's a great time to build a frame um and if you build a frame please share it with me because we have a ton of distribution I think at this point on foraster Bas is either the largest or the second largest channel and I have the second most follow followers and so between me and Bas we can basically reach every single follow uh forecaster user um and what I've seen pretty consistently is like when people build things and I retweet them and we post them in bass they blow up um and want to make sure that everything y'all are building is blowing up so please just send it to us so that's frames before I move on to eth Denver any questions on frames comments things people are seeing sorry Jesse just the just to confirm right frames is primarily on faka yeah right yeah um got it okay yeah so I mean I don't even have a here here's a good example like frames are a part of the forecaster protocol they're relatively generalizable um and a lot of frames are fully offchain like for instance this hackathon like you know survey frame you just click through you can put in your information um Colin and team uh built this uh and so when we like get the information from people it just goes into uh Ponder's database um and huge shout out to Colin and Ben who like whipped this together in a day um so that's offchain but I think what we've done really well is we've basically said hey also people are going to build a lot of onchain frames for instance like click a button mint an nft or click a button to tip someone or buy a good um and we got really fast out the gate to say hey if you're building onchain frames build them on base and we're going to create a bunch of tools and resources and and uh infrastructure to make it really easy for you to build that on base and I think through that um kind of push that we've been making base has become kind of the standard place for people to build forecaster frames so lots of frames won't be on base but I think base is the default for where people will build frames does that make sense J yes sir it does um I think it cool to try to do a build weekend or something on in on the continent with frames yeah we would love that um that that would be awesome and we could send pizza and um would love to support would would would I definitely would love to take you from that offer and one thing that I I think is worth just um let me justum shum my share my T screen really quickly this is the the like where forecaster users are transacting by chain and you can see that Bas was like you know we had some good growth in August with onchain Summer but then we kind of flattened off um and then this is the launch of frames and since the launch of frames base has gone up to like 60% market share basically in terms of where far cter users are transacting and so that's like a 3 4X increase in market share um which is indicative of basically everyone building frames on Bas and then people using those frames on base um and so this has been a huge huge accomplishment and uh huge shout out to the bass team huge shout out to all of y'all who've been building frames um like Colin who enabled us to build this hackathon Frame Jocko who you know has built a ton of the coinbase wallet frames um it's really been a massive effort Bas Builders uh to put base at the center of this story and make sure that folks who are building um have the great the great tooling to do it okay any other questions about frames uh it's any it's any it's yeah Cen it's it's based on connected address activity so it's basically looking at for the the forecaster users who have connected addresses where are they doing transactions that's it dashboard any other questions on frames just want to say frames are sick we got pulled into it over the weekend and I completely sidetracked our team to build a frame this week and like it completely just took over my like fascination with building on the internet again I don't know what it is man but it's like magic so I just think it's a good direction 100% agree yeah I mean if it makes you feel any better about sidetracking your team Lindsay I have sidetracked our whole team for the last three weeks since frames launch I've basically just been like everyone the only thing that matters is frames and running an effective tooling build and go to market for frames it's I mean the thing so a that's been a massive distraction for our team but B it's had massive positive impact um like Bas is growing at a much faster rate than it ever has been before because of all the activity we're driving yeah it's like the only place you want to like chat and also just like build a tool into the chats you're having it's just going to get more and more powerful you know they're going to add the ability to transact in line so you can just pop up a transaction and sign it in place um I think that's going to be huge I'm sure they're going to come to DMs like we're just at the very beginning of of this Innovation curve I think it's awesome I'm I'm not going to sh but I'm going to share the thing uh we built we launched it today it's uh it's on base so it lets you uh grab every member from a channel and create a token claim for them as a frame that's awesome yeah that's all I'll say on it but uh I just like we sidetracked everything and just built this in like four days and like I'm stoked that's awesome yeah well I just followed and retweeted sick recasted uh and again if you guys have cool frames that you're building or you need pooling or you need pizza like please just let us know we want to help you build sck frames on base so we'll do whatever we can to make that possible any other questions okay I'm gonna keep us moving um so next up eth Denver um just want to give you guys a little bit of preview we are uh doing a bunch of things at eth Denver so if you're going to be there would love to to kind of see you there first off we're going to have a home base on the show floor um so bunch of cool demos um cookies every hour um a bunch of like you know polaroid pictures of all of us if you were at eth Denver last year it'll be similar Vibes um we' love to see yall there eth Denver is a little chaotic we're hoping to create a nice little home home base that gives people a little bit of um sanctity in the in the chaos of East Denver and then there's a bunch of events that we're doing so we're we're doing something with Wormhole um uh I wouldn't call it co-hosted I guess we're sponsoring that Wormhole event but folks will be there um we're also helping throw a concert with Blau um that's gonna be cool so that's on 3-1 um should be pretty epic um music is a big Focus for us on CH music and then I think most excitingly we're going to have a base meet up at the farcaster happy hour um is sponsoring it um it's like purple base and privy um and we are going to have a whole area there where people are going be hanging out bunch of cool experiences so that should be great really encourage folks to come I'm sure I think invites are going out about that next week um and then the last thing we're doing is we're running base hunt again we did the first version of this at Art basil um and we're running it back for for eth Denver it's going to be an onchain scavenger hunt there'll be in inperson components of it uh fully on online onchain components of it um should be a lot of fun it's second iteration and so I think it's G be even cooler than last time um so we would love to see you all there if there are things you're doing um that we should attend please send them to us um we'll we'll we'll try and send folks from our team um and uh if you if you are going to be there please also and then last thing uh just a few updates on on the devell side um we published a bunch of new guides um so some of these are account abstraction um and then some of these are uh nft frame stuff um uh and so if you're building with smart wallets great guides if you're building with frames great guides I'd say those are probably the two biggest like areas we're focused on right now is how do we let people build really great products with smart wallets and account abstraction and then how do we enable people to build really great frames and all of this is really oriented around um what we think are the um key pieces of like infrastructure on user experience that are required to bring the next billion people on chain um so check out those guides again we'll share out this deck afterwards and base and then the other thing that uh is worth calling out is we're hiring for for devil Dev veler advocacy um so we have a developer Advocate role open we also have a like a principal developer not here today but um uh you know consecution on warcast and Twitter um he's running those hiring processes and we're looking to get more awesome people to work alongside Taylor uh and will and zamia wins anything announcements I just want to know what kind of frames everyone's checking out now I feel like I can't keep up with it what are some of the coolest things like I mean it's only been like two weeks right like since it's really blown up I can't keep keep up with what people are building Jesse what's your favorite frame for the week go I I really like this one I think I just linked the right one um oh oh yeah that's awesome I broke the link um but yeah I liked King of the frame it's like y it's like yoink but it's fully on chain um I thought that was really really awesome um I mean one thing that launched yesterday I don't know folks saw it but um we worked with warp cast and farcaster to add mint with warps um which will now work for all nfts or starting to work with all nfts and frames and so that's really awesome um thought that was really cool um this isn't a frame yesterday but um I thought this was fun like do the dog Doge team aird dropped the 500,000 addresses on base yesterday so I had all these conversations with like my wife and my friends they were all like hey Jesse like I got like $35 of dog is this real I like yeah that's real like that's welcome to memes they give you free money um magic money so I thought that was really awesome another one that I really liked was uh crop XYZ which is basically Farmville um in a frame built by Sheldon that was really really cool this one was another one that was cool uh you know just like speed Tracer uh has a frame and you can play speed Tracer you can't play it in line but you can see your the score and the leaderboard and all that stuff and we did that for base jobs day on Wednesday so those were a few ones I I uh really enjoyed Luke yeah I just wanted to let everyone know the history of dog in case you're wondering um so a couple years ago in people pleaser the nft artist she purchased the the nft of like the original doge meme um and fractionalized it and made it into the dog token it's like own the Doge um it's sort of been like this meme coin for a couple years but uh it's great to see them like doing Distribution on a base uh I I think it's kind of exciting to see like the meme potential of like the OG doge meme right um it's cool to see yeah I mean I think it's awesome and if you look I I was just looking at the token you know a lot of people are obviously selling it but it's basically like up a little bit in the last 24 hours and um there's 15,000 people 14,000 people who've exchanged it in some way and I think that that's like pretty cool like that's if you look at all of the other l2s in the world right now none of them have more than like 2,000 people who've traded any token and having Doge on base have 15,000 people who traded it in the last 24 hours is pretty remarkable and I think it's indicative of like what's starting to happen on base which is that they're starting to be these real consumer use cases driven by the low fee um opportunity that um enable wholly new experiences so huge shout out to dog Doge team they'll probably do some cool frame stuff because I remember in the past you could like buy a pixel of the you could choose which pixel of the Doge you wanted to buy if you like owned enough dog so I can imagine some really cool frames that are like this is my pixel or whatever you know yeah just get friends not only pixel at the height of mem stock Mania you could buy a Tesla with Doge if I remember correctly oh man by way for everyone that is on the on a comment so to give you some quick kind of like way of thinking for kickstarting you can just use the a framing andry lines it literally just like Fork it the point over sell and just works just that's just forget the taste uh it's very basic then you will see that there is a lot of people that are foring and making more complex things uh Brian shared something for meting also last night there was a very cool example on how to do meting this is the warcast that was posted and the uh repo used which is a fork of the 100 line frames and build on top of it for something more complex so that's something that you can see over time something to check it out for more like a simple case and a more complex case thanks Leo appreciate the links can I shout one thing out also yeah we've got so we use Nar for like hubs access in farcaster and like Nar is incredible and they just built a tool that's basically a no codes frame tool and you you pay right now 90 cents for a monthly subscription to get access to their no frames tool that this guy Dill just built and it's like for really simple things that you just need to get out there it's a great great little thing to take a look at um so I just I highly recommend people who are just getting started or who just don't want to spend a lot of time coding a frame like you now have a no code frame tool very basic but it works sorry con can you drop the link please as well thank you oh yeah cheers love it um fun fact about Nar uh Manan and Rish the founders I hired Manan in 2018 um to come and build the retail engineering team and we worked together for a long time and Rish um also joined it about the same time he was on the product side so I didn't hire him but we worked very closely together and then me and him um you know spent the the kind of year year and a half building towards base um he was kind of the product person who I was working more most closely with on on all things based so he was there really at the beginning um and so it's been so cool to watch them both leave coinbase um go and start Nar with farcaster and I'm kind of in constant touch with both of them uh figuring out how we can work together so it's been awesome to see them having success and awesome to see them building tools to make it easier for people to build frames they have a a gather space also uh and Ben and I literally like all of our meetings are held in the Nar gather space I love that very open about it one one fun and I tweeted I cast about this the other day but um we are working so base has a gather space as well we have like our whole team runs in gather and we do all of our meetings there but we're working with the gather team actually right now to design a new gather space that's gonna be much bigger and is gonna have um a few different kind of like access zones that we're GNA open up to um the broader community and so the hope is that in the next few months we'll also be able to connect that with um like onchain data so we'll actually be able to basically put attestations on chain on base or nfts on chain on base and gate access to different areas of The Gather office with nfts so we can be like all of y'all you know who have shown up at Bas Builder nfts can come in any part of the office and hang out but like the random person in the base Channel maybe they get only access to a certain area and then we're just going to start hosting everything there so we'll host these Builder Fridays there um we'll let people come work out of the office um uh and hopefully we'll also be able to find ways to connect to the Nar office so you can kind of have like the broader based family all in a connected onchain Virtual Office um huge shout out to Andrew flart who's in the chat um who's been driving that effort any other questions comments thoughts I think it's a really really cool um good Market strategy for Bas and I think what I love is the speed of experimentation and Innovation because if we think about before frames you wanted to like clear around with like a dab that was like fun that you could easily get users it was quite challenging to do that right so compare building a Dap and then having to think about like customer acquisition and distribution and all that stuff and now as a developer Builder you can easily spin up something really quickly that is fun and it's it like I'm not sure who said I think it was Lindsay who said that is making building on the internet fund again um and so it's I'm quite excited to you know dive deep and appreciate all the links that you know the the folks on the call have shared love it 100% agreed huge step function change in uh distribution and speed of innovation any other questions comments thoughts okay sick last plug I guess we talked about the Devo roles we're also hiring for engineering marketing product um and uh ecosystem like Business Development so on the ecosystem business development side we're looking for someone who can lead kind of our whole defi ecosystem so if you know anyone great hard on so uh ethereum just set a main net date which is March 13 um I believe that our current internal alignment is that we're going to be able to ship on March 17th or 16th So within week one um to make use of blob space which I think is going to be huge uh really really excited about that we're seeing if we can pull it up even further um that's really exciting account abstraction um ton of work going on there if you're building anything with account abstraction we now have um gas credits that you can get access to um through Pimco and a few other providers that can get you started building and subs siiz and user transactions for free um so that's a big big area of focus for us um I'd say those are probably the three big things right now frames account abstraction and 4844 sweet okay
