FtC x EC Hackathon | Workshop: Capture Solution by Numbers Protocol (Oct 2024)
Funding the Commons·Thu, Oct 9, 2025, 12:00 AM
In this workshop, led by Ethan from Numbers Protocol, we explored Capture, a provenance infrastructure that brings trust to digital media in the age of generative AI. Ethan introduced tools like Capture Cam and Dashboard, which help creators verify and protect digital assets on-chain. Key use cases, including news media and election archives, highlighted Capture’s ability to secure and authenticate content—supporting trust in digital assets from the moment of creation. Hosted on October 31 as part of the Funding the Commons x Earth Commons Hackathon. okay um can you hear me yes okay great um so hi everybody um great to be part of the funding the commons Earth Commons hackthon 2024 um today we'll be covering capture to hopefully assist you guys with the trust and authenticity by numbers protocol track um for me uh as for me my name is Ethan and I'm a developer numbers I'll be giving this Workshop um before starting this is our agenda um so we have lot to cover so I'll try to um you know be brief uh we'll uh spend about 10 minutes introducing capture um its purpose and what it hopes to achieve after that we'll spend another 10 minutes to discuss a few use cases to give you guys an idea on how capture is currently being used and hopefully spark some ideas um in this section we'll cover around two a news media One news media use case and a decentralized archive use case and for the last portion and the bulk of the workshop I'll walk you guys through capture itself cam dashboard I showcase and the SDK uh we'll finish things off with a brief Q&A before wrapping things up um I'll also be handing out some cap capture promo codes for free three month TR at the end of the workshop so make sure to stick around uh to the end okay so with that out of the way let's Dive Right In so what is capture um simply put um capture is a Providence infrastructure for digital media um when I say Providence uh we mean the full history of digital media so uh why do we need a Provident in infrastructure when and why is it so important for digital media well um we live in a world of digital media um photos and videos are everywhere it's um super accessible sharable and easy to create especially with um generative AI now in the picture um it's super awesome for us users but um because we have something interesting to consume all the time and with the multiple new tools um uh we have it's really convenient but behind all that convenience is um the difficult challenge of establishing trust and ownership so this is where capture and numbers protocol comes in so capture establishes um the trust of ownership of digital Assets in the face of a rapidly changing digital and AI landscape so more specifically uh with capture we're able to label AI generated content we're able to combat false information and more importantly um we can uphold with capture we can uphold human intellectual property via attribution license and copyright so how capture is able to do this is is another deeper conversation but at a high level um what capture does is it creates proofs that adhere to the latest open metadata standards it indexes the registered files with a unique ID and then makes them queriable and commits them onto the blockchain and um this is all made possible with numbers protocol which Powers capture so what does capture offer so um our goal is to put the Providence capabilities in the hands of a wide range of users so capture aims to be a crossplatform a crossplatform offering a wide range of products and services so these include um from the top capture I our display widget our cam our mobile interface um dashboard our desktop interface and our SDK which uh for developers um we'll talk about each of these in detail later but um with capture ultimately you will be able to create protect and publish all with the backing of onchain proofs provided by numbers blockchain so if you want to learn more about um how these onchain records work um I encourage you to check out um the following resources um I really would like to cover each of these but unfortunately there isn't enough time so I think these three resources here are good reads and um make sure to check it out okay so before we get to the capture walkthrough I'd like to spend some time to Showcase a few use cases of capture to hopefully give you guys an idea of what capture is capable of doing so um we'll first start off with the news media use case um Defiance media so Defiance media just for some background is a broadcasting network that covers a topics of decentralization finance and technology so on the website you can see um their collection of curated content so these include these are a bunch of videos um with you know their own like personality it's sort of like um commentary and news so more importantly um and most interestingly all the content that's on their site has onchain Providence records to validate the integrity and it's all done with capture so while having uh these uh Integrity uh and Providence records is nice um it's not too useful to have these onchain records when you know you can't you don't know about them or they're buried in transaction details so that's where our display widget capture ey comes in so if you look on the right hand side screenshot uh on each of these cards there is a capture eye widget which can be clicked and then expanded and it'll view it'll display the basic Providence information um more on capture eye later but um as you can see like this is a use case of a news media site or a media platform integrating capture ey to help um uh maintain its Integrity so um if you're interested in this uh feel free to check out check them out on this at this website you can go ahead and pru the collection CL on the capture ey see how it works okay so moving on to the next use case I think where capture eye really shines is with decentralized archives so um we've actually have many use cases in this area and however uh the one that I'll be showing you guys or um sharing with you guys today utilizes multiple facets of capture eye and I think in that way it's uh it makes it the most interesting so um for this use case uh it's the 2024 election uh archive so 2024 is a year of Elections um we have the US one coming up but previously we had um the Indonesian one the India one and also in Taiwan um so what makes this archive particularly interesting is that um it contains photos and videos from both professional photo photojournalists as well as ordinary citizens um the professional photojournalists um use dashboard to upload their and create onchain proofs for their professional grade photos while ordinary citizens on the ground users used capture cam to take photos using their mobile devices that are automatically registered on chain so you can actually see the full collection of uh the archives in the real time record section um you can see in this screenshot here um you know the photos and then we have have a togg global part here where you can see the professional photographers photojournalists and we can also see the Civil um the civilian uh participation so like Defiance media the Capt you can see that the capture eyes are also very present um you can see that you can hover you can open it up and then you can see the uh Providence information as well so um if you're interested in these uh definitely check it out we have two of the links on the screen um go ahead and check out you know take a look at the pictures and see uh what the professional photographers and what the um you know the the localers uh took uh for the archive okay so seems like we're I'm zooming through this pretty quickly so that's um so that's good we have plenty of time to go through the capture walkthrough so um finally we hit to the part of the um presentation where we just capture itself so um I want to emphasize that um for this track uh I have it on the screen here that we um highly recommend users to utilize our capture products um the purpose of Crea this Providence infrastructure is to make your life easier so um as you can see I underlined in the in red projects incorporating existing products including capture dashboard Cam and showcase page are highly encouraged so for this portion of the workshop I'll go through each of these products and cover how each of them uh how to use each of them and some other relevant key points and um ideally I'll spend like 10 minutes on each of these products and services but it could be since we're good on time um and might uh spend a little bit more time and um definitely let me know if you have any questions um uh at the end uh yeah at the end of the walkth through so the first item that we want to cover is capture cam so um capture cam is our mobile app and it's available on Android and iOS whoops sorry about that okay so it's back online sorry my browser cut off um me see if I'm sharing the screen still okay great still sharing okay so uh as I said uh capture cam is our mobile app and it's available it's cross on both Android and iOS so um anybody with a mobile device can download it um capture cam is designed to basically give the everyday user the ability to have a blockchain based blockchain back ability to create blockchain backed images and photos uh photo images and videos with just one click so um basically uh if you have a mobile device then you have the ability to take a photo and create an onchain record so um to get started um just you know search capture cam the app or play store and then download to your device um all of our products and services require the creation of a capture account so um set that up it's pretty straightforward you can see on the screenshot um if you have an account already just go ahead and input your email and password to log in and if you don't then um on the rightmost image you can see just input basic information like username password and email and you have Presto you have an account so okay after that's done uh we can start shooting so capture cam operates like any other camera app so we designed it to be intuitive um basically all you have got to do is you click the center icon and then um to open the camera afterwards you can take a video or or shoot a photo and then um you know we have this uh on on the far right we have the um the preview mode after which you can click next and um once you click next uh cap capture cam will compile all the metadata and store them on chain for you so all you got to do is take a photo and click next and all that is done for you capture can does it all so capture Cam's Advantage so uh is that the Providence records um generate are generated at the moment of creation so when you think about it it's uh there's no space for any manipulation or alterations um the moment you you you click take the photo and you click next it's the the asset is registered and the onchain records are created just right there at the spot and from an authenticity standpoint um uh we believe that um images and videos that are created via with capture cem have the highest uh level of of authenticity or Integrity so um now that you take the photo what can we do with it so like um basically you can you know you can view the details so you can if we go to the first screenshot over here you can click on the leftmost tab and you'll see like a summary of all your photos and videos that you you've created with capture Cam and um you can click into them and you can view uh something we call the uh the details so you can see the photo and and um you can see the attribution information so you can see here that you know it's owned by uh this Creator called ew was1 123 and it was created by eos1 123 and then under that we have the full details so these details are um information that is stored on chain so we have like the loccation the Tim stamp and then we have um the the nid which is the unique ID that we use to index the files to make them searchable on blockchain we have the hash we have the M type signature and then some other device related information so these information is kind of like um it kind of gives like the uh it helps to capture the context of the creation so you can see like um things like you know the location um the date and also like maybe like um you know the state of your phone whatever so these these kind of give context to how this creation you this this photo or image was created so um capture cam also has some other cool functions as well so like um if you explore a little bit further um you know the cam uh it lends itself for other like cool functions such as uh minting of nfts so I know nfts aren't hot right now but this is also a cool feature that exists within uh capture Cam and um you can access this by you know going to the top bar clicking the three do icon and then navigating to something called Network actions and um the network actions include there are a bunch of them here so um you know you can M and share you can um you know gift a capture there are multiple different types of actions available so I think um I think the best way to uh experience capture app is to use it so yeah go ahead and just um take some time to explore on your uh on your own yeah in your own free time so okay that's pretty self-explanatory so the next one is capture dashboard so um you can navigate to capture dashboard with a link on the screen here so dashboard. capture. XYZ um as I mentioned before capture dashboard is our desktop application um it was created as sort of the Google Drive for capture and it gives those who created media outside of Cam such as you know professional photographers or photojournalists or you know any Creator who takes a photo outside of um their mobile device with a DSLR Etc um the ability to generate Providence with capture via the up load so um as I mentioned um with everything uh in the capture all of our capture products in order to use it you need to create an account if you don't um you just go ahead and log if you have an account already just go ahead and input your email and password and just log in if you don't same as capture cam just fill in the basic information andate an account okay so um once that's done um logging in you'll be able to see um you know this is what capture dashboard looks like so um you can see this dashboard here on the on the left hand side we have some actions that we can do um we have the upload and then we have the dashboard tab here on the screen here you see the um the Home tab which is the dashboard tab it has you know basic summary of like recently uploaded assets that you've created um you also have some folders that you have verified collected on sale so dashboard kind of operates as you know a place to manage your assets um and also to create them via the upload so um I think the most uh useful and important um you know function uh free guys is probably upload function so um uh dashboards uh supports two different types of uploads so we have the single file uploader and the multi file uploader and um each of these has their own merits um with either option um if your media has any you know metadata embedded inside of it already then um dashboard will automatically parse that and then pop and then um uh it will the onchain records will reflect so um for example like if I had a photo that already had geolocation data on it or it has some other um you know attribution information on it then uh dashboard will be able to parse the file and and and um record that onto the blockchain so uh moving forward let me talk about the little the advantages and disadvantages of either one of these uh upload functions so um with single file upload um you can go through um as it as the name suggests like you upload one file and um what what happens after you upload file is that you're met with this form so the main advantage for single upload single file upload is that um you're able to go through all the Providence fields and customize them to your liking you can if your file has um metadata already embedded inside of it then you can check to see that it's been parsed correctly and um you can review them before the actual registration itself so um when you you upload a file and then it becomes this uh right hand screenshot here with a preview image and a few form Fields okay so um let's go through each of these form Fields so um you have a section for the headline and a caption and you have a creation time uh you can also set the location choose a tag and um on the right hand side these options are uh kind of interesting so I'll kind of go a little bit um into more details about them we have a generated by field so this is for um you know AI generated Creations so here you can Define uh what um model you used um you know mid Journey um Dow e Etc um or you can Define this as uh no no AI whatsoever so you can you can do that as well and then um the next section it's probably uh interesting for creators is um you can Define your license so you either can select from a list of licenses that we provide for you or if you have your own license you can input um via the custom license option so um and underneath this uh you can Define yourself as um the original Creator so um there are scenarios where you know in most scenarios you're uploading um photos and video or files that you generated yourself but there may be some Edge case scenarios where maybe your are uploading it for a friend who doesn't have the account or um some or yeah or a family member and you want to give them attribution so in that CA in that scenario you can toggle this off and then enter in their name and in the final two Fields um allow AI training and mint nft and starts uh selling the license so um an interesting thing about um our onchain records is that we can define whether or not we allow certain uh assets that are registered to be um permiss to give to give AI training models permissions to train on them so um if you toggle this off you're not giving your your your consent and if you toggle this on then you are and the final option is uh self-explanatory you can toggle this on to um uh add a nft uh minting on top of the registration and uh you can choose to you know just sell it in our own dedicated Marketplace or just um sell it on your own okay so um that was a lot but um yeah the main benefit as I mentioned is that um you can you know customize these fields you can check to see everything's okay um you know and you can make adjustments but obviously the downside with single file upload is that it's you can only upload one at a time and it's like much slower okay so thankfully um we also have the multi upload option so um it's a more line flow um allows you to upload multiple files and um before um uh uploading you can have like a little summary view so if I open three I upload uploaded three files then I'll see three files in my summary and um if you know I don't really care about um adjusting you know the Providence parameters then or if I'm confident that the par information is correct then I can just go ahead and click confirm and um have the registration go um we also allow users to click into um specific files to adjust the Providence um information just like in single file uploads so if I click on um this asset here in the summary view then um you met with the same exact form and you can you know adjust the the um the values accordingly um files that are uh adjusted with Providence information um they'll be indicated with the edited um tag and um as I mentioned once everything is good then you can just go ahead and click confirm and proceed with the registration so um how how this works in dashboard is that you know pending files will first appear in the in the draft folder um before ultimately appearing in the verified folder when the registration is complete so here on the left hand side screenshot you can see that um file is pending it's in the draft folder and then when it's done it appears in our verified folder um so okay so now that it's uh registered like we want to confirm the that the details are correct so um we can view the details by navigating to the verified folder clicking on the asset card and uh we can we're met with this uh details view so here on dashboard you can view the details um you have the photo on the left and we have the information on the right so here we have you know a copyright section we have a Providence area with um the nid the Creator registration time and then we also have you know the source of the registration so you know we can it indicates that this was a dashboard upload we have the geolocation and um we have some other uh information as well so um alternatively so this isn't isolated it's just a dashboard so um this page is actually also sharable so um you know if you click on the share icon over here then um you're able to generate this link here which um if you navigate to this page it will show um the following page right here which is basically a carbon copy of the ASO Details page but in a in a dedicated link so yeah and um before um going on I think um I like to spend some time to cover how the inputs in dashboard reflect on chain so so far I've been just talking about how these Providence records exist but um I think it'd be good to show you guys um actually more in detail so here on the screen um you can see a screenshot um of an ass of the previous asset so the this this this photo here that was registered um this is the transaction details for that for that one asset here you can see that um as I mentioned before earlier in the presentation um every asset that's registered with capture um has has an asset and ID so this is our unique ID and um this ID is what we use to query um its records and so um with if we have just with this with with this nid we can find the photo you know on decentralized storage and we can also um grab its uh trans we grab the transaction and we can also grab its uh onchain Providence so on the lower half of this uh screenshot you can see the raw input and in here you can see um you know the nid once again with some other relevant information so here you can see here we have an asset tree CID so this asset Tre is where all the detailed Providence information lies so let's if we navigate to um this link then we're met with we have a full summary of all the Providence information on the right hand side and I wanted to do kind of like a side by side um to see how like the whatever I input in the form uh appears on change and um so here you can see like you know the headline I set to um you know nandang Taiwan and here you can see that um on on the right hand side on the on chain also has that information the caption and the abstract is the same and then here October 30th 2024 this translates to the unix's time of of um yeah whatever you see on the screen okay so if we go down further you can see that I also defined this as a non aai because I took this photo myself and um I also selected this capture license online offline version 1.0 so here you can see in the license section that we have you know the license name and we have the supporting documentation here and under generated by we have clearly indicated no AI generation and finally here see I toggled myself on so um you know I'm the original owner and spoiler swill 1993 is me and um also I toggled off uh allow AI training so here under mining preference you'll see not allowed so um that was just a quick run through but um the records are indeed on train you don't need to take my word for it and um you can check out the records onchain yourself and um if you guys want to you know if you're interested in that and you want to take a closer look and see like all the values then um I would uh links to the transaction is on the screen as well as the um onchain Providence record so just feel free to take a look and um if you have any questions uh you can feel free to reach out to us and we'll do our best to answer those questions okay so at this point I think um some of you may be asking like um uh I registered a bunch of media and they have Providence that's awesome that's cool but like what can I do with it you know like how can I easily share them so that's where uh don't worry about it because we also thought about that you know because you know as like I mentioned earlier we want to cover all the bases we want to make this uh really user friendly want to give everybody every type of user the options so we've we've created something called the Showcase page so um here you can see a gif and um it kind of Scrolls uh here uh it's it's accessible to anybody uh via the dashboard so um it's just like a dedicated page um that showcases your um your Creations your onch your creation your Creations created with capture and um you know you can uh all you got to do is uh navigate to go to dashboard navigate to the Showcase Tab and then do some customization and then you have this page um it's also important to note so here I'll I'll um go to the next page so here you have uh here's dashboard we can navigate to the Showcase Tab and then um you can fill out this form and then uh make the page public and then click View and then press though you have the page so I think it's important to note that um uh yeah and you can generate this link by um the link by clicking view page and um if you're interested in how this appears you want to take a look at it about take a look at it yourself and kind of explore it yourself um you can go ahead and just navigate to the URL that's on this slide um I think it's important to note that uh I'll go back to this uh GIF here um that uh all showcase pages also have um capture ey automatically integrated with it um so here you can see here um that's one of the conveniences that we provide for you guys that U once you not only do you have a you know nice responsive page um to Showcase your verified Creations we also give uh the users the ability uh your perspective viewers the ability to view the Entre Providence and uh via the capture eye okay and um for those of you who have like your own sites and maybe don't want to use the you know capture I mean the Showcase page um you you can actually uh embed um this the Showcase page um into your application via an iframe so um you can just by you pasting this link uh you can you know embed it into your application as an if frame um there are some customiz limited customization options so you can pass in a UR parameter iframe equals yes at the uh to your url to remove the top banner and just have this um you know section here so I think the next slide shows that no so it it'll just show up like uh what you see here so yeah um another picture of what it looks like uh with the um you know the asset card with the capture eye okay so um I mentioned capture ey bunch and uh for good reason um so I capture ey is a really important part of you know the capture uh infrastructure the Providence infrastructure so in our perspective capture guy gives you know creators like yourself or developers like yourself the flexibility to share the Providence records um in non capture related products so um like I mentioned in our use cases in defiance media the Showcase page also um in the archives um with capture ey you can you can you know showcase the Providence uh Records easily um with just this display widget um capture ey is uh really customizable so as you can see on the screen the summary here um there are you know you can customize this uh the center section the Providence Zone and and the action button is customizable and also the engagement Zone can also be um adjusted to your liking um okay so um adding capture ey to your site is actually pretty straightforward it's um we we don't want to make it difficult you guys to add it to your sites so all you have to do is um import um import it uh into your project and then um just add the capture ey tag and you'll have uh what you'll get is um this what you end up getting is this uh this little asset card with the uh I itself with these uh capture eye tags so um okay so uh it's important to note that uh for capture ey to display properly uh you also need you'll need to register the files first with either uh capture cam or dashboard or or you know the API um in order you need to uh register it first and then once you register then you can get your nid and then after that you just plug in the nid into the nid field and um the capture ey will display the information that you need okay I've included uh some more um details on how like uh capture eye works so here we have the documentation and then here we have the uh the GitHub page as well and then we also have here like interactive playground so um you can try you can go ahead and play around with it yourself um in this playground and uh before you uh integrate into your site okay so for developers out there um who uh we also have our SDK so I've included the documentation here uh it's and um like I mentioned like everything in capture requires uh capture account so um before you're able to um use um the SDK to you know use some API functions like you know register or uh view assets or something uh you'll need to create a capture account and also have something called the capture authorization token so um because these are these prerequisites are uh important for you guys I'll walk you guys through on how to um uh get that so um creating a capture account is pretty straightforward um you can either go to capture cam to create an account or capture dashboard um as I mentioned before just into put put the information in and then create an account after that um you can navigate to U to get the authorization token you can navigate to uh you can log in to capture dashboard and you can click on the my accounts option over here and then navigate to overview and scroll down and then you have the capture authorization token so uh once you have your act authorization token you can uh you stick it into the uh to the header as and uh you should be able to um you should be able to uh do whatever you have to do so yeah uh I think that um concludes uh the workshop I think I zoomed through this pretty quickly but um yeah so um uh to help you guys to get started um like I mentioned before like at the end of the workshop portion we'll be sharing kind of like a promo code so here's the promo code on the screen I'll leave it up here for you guys to get it um basically with this promo code you can um you know you you enter in while you register and uh you get a three three Monon trial of capture so that includes that gives you ample amount of credits to be able to do the registration and um and you know play around with other different functions so I'm going to leave this on the screen for a little bit and um after words we can probably enter a a Q&A session um before concluding so um maybe I'll leave this up here for maybe one more minute and then I can we can go we can dive straight into the Q&A thank you Ean um I thought it was one question from L uh but it thinks already answered I'm not sure if you want to add anything to that l do you see C being used for impact evaluation for example when ping of reforestation effort um let's see yeah so I think um yeah capture cam is at at its Bare Bones is uh a very um straightforward application right where it doesn't have like a specific like use case like we give user so the opport the abil like if there's a a a a use case for people to um that requires them to have like you know some Providence or some evidence that they need to like you know store on chain and make immutable then you can use capture cam for that uh function um Sherry uh she's a member of our team like she answered the question yeah so we capture cam has been used um previously in farm evaluation and management so that's one uh interesting use case um for capture cam as well and like um other things like you know like for example like if you get in a like in a car accident and you need to like document like for example like you know the damag is done like you can even use capture cam for that as well so um it's the it's it it capture cam doesn't really it's just generally speaking is a blockchain camera camp and it's kind of like up to up to the users and their imagination and their Innovation to use it however they need to use it awesome thank you for that um not sure if there are any other questions that I would like to ask um as well what would you like to see uh builds during the hackaton is there maybe something that a solution that you find intriguing and would like to encourage Builders to explore um yeah sure so um as I mentioned before I think that um we we kept the prompt to be pretty open-ended on purpose um we want to we don't want to pigeon hole like um developers or you know the creativity of um you know the people participating in this hackathon you know like I think uh numbers protocol we' participated in a number of these hackathons in the past and um you know we know that a lot of cool things can be created from them so I think we kept it kind of open-ended on on purpose and um I think like you know capture uh in general is like a very flexible tool and we just hope that you know you know the developers and the creators can create something interesting you know like I can see a situation where like maybe you know like a game can be created from it or you know maybe like an app for that encourages more like some like Community journalism or something like that or um just anything so I think uh the team is pretty open-minded and yeah we're excited to see what um you know the developers can create awesome thank you and lastly is there maybe like a like a link you'd like to share or share how people can get that with you oh right yeah that'd be should have included that in the um slides um I think we have a telegram and uh we have a Discord uh we also have a Twitter so uh we're pretty I think uh we're pretty active in all those platforms um we I think maybe can um Sherry share the links uh in the description because I don't have them in the slides but um yeah like uh we're if you also you know we also respond to emails so like earlier like in the week we received some emails from like email from a developer trying to develop with our SDK so we also respond to that as well I think um our developer team is pretty responsive okay yeah thanks Stefan so um yeah so we have our socials uh maybe if I I I can also share our um like our website me one second okay one second sorry about that okay so um you can navigate to these uh websites as well and then probably find some of the information on how to reach us there as well but yeah like um definitely if you um have any questions or comments or any feedback uh regarding you know anything capture related definitely shoot us a message um I'll you'll probably hear from me so I'll probably respond to you guys and um also actually I'll I'll also share this um as well this link here so um here if you have any issues or any uh need for support for anything capture related um you can also uh leave a message over here like we're we're very active and um yeah we love to talk to you guys yep thank you Ethan thank you for uh sharing the links as well yeah I think we can we can wrap up here and also encourage anyone that has any further questions you know watching the recording to to reach out to you okay yeah thanks awesome thank you so much
