How to Bring the Next Billion Developers Into Web3 | Phil Kwok - EasyA

Ethereum DenverWed, Oct 9, 2024, 12:00 AM

We all know the stat that there are only 20,000 developers in Web3, vs 25 million in Web2. In Web3, we talk about increasing that 20k to the 25M mark. But what if we went beyond that. After all, Web3 is going to be far bigger than Web2. So why not aim for the stars and go for a billion developers? This talk is about how we can leverage Web3 to enable mass-scale participation and contributions at a societal level, and on a scale never seen before in human history. By incentivising people to contribute and lowering the barrier to getting involved, everyone can become a builder and be instrumental in building the society they wish to see. [Music] good evening everyone put your hands up if you've already heard of eza before yeah there we go round of applause okay great well it's great we have so many fans in the crowd right here um great so many people already know about easier and already used it I've got a couple of very special announcements to make today about things that we're bringing out with eza but first of all for any of you who don't know about eza our mission is to bring the next billion developers into web 3 I know that's a big number and so over the course of the next couple of minutes I'm going to explain a little bit more about how that actually works and how we're going to reach such a big number but first of all I'll just give a brief background on myself and our story as well so the first couple of uh slides I guess the first BD isn't really showing up properly there for some reason on this projector but anyway you can imagine that underneath here there is a little description of us um but maybe it's better that you're not reading off the screen and you're actually listening to me talk after all I'm in person here so uh if you look at the top left two pictures you'll see that there are two dashing young men um and that is of course my co-founder and me so that's full and D we're brothers not identical twins we do look very similar um but that's us um we co-founded eza almost uh four years ago now and really our journey into the space started all over 10 years ago now so that was through Bitcoin mining um it was us sitting down building these machines so learning about pretty much every four-letter word there was out there not the rude ones but the fpga and the A6 all of those good things that were coming out at the time so very specialized Hardware very specialized equipment that was used to run these different nodes and after all at the end of the day mine Bitcoin along the way of course we built a ton of different apps on the consumer side so at University we launched two Marketplace startups uh and After exiting those then came and founded eza so after taking a little bit of a break from software engineering I was an attorney in New York Dom was actually at Blackstone in finance and then was one of the first hires out uh at Cloud kitens which was Travis kalanick the founder of Uber's startup so he was head- hunted there and was tapped to be one of their first hires setting up the New York office we came back into web 3 came and saw the light again and founded eza as our third startup Flash Forward to today we're now the world's number one eza uh web 3 learning app we have a community of over 750,000 developers uh we announced recently that we hit over 100,000 monthly active users and we have another big announcement that's coming forwards uh that actually has grown even bigger than that and really who are these people well these people are startup Founders they are people who want to build in web3 who want to build a startup and they're people just like you so people who are excited about building people who are hacking on their projects some people are hacking on them just as side projects but others are actually getting funded by some of the world's best venture capitalist and household VC household name VCS so the likes of16 z y combinator uh polygon Labs as well and a number of others as well so these people are very very talented and they are just like you and we partner with pretty much every big L1 and L2 out there these are just a couple of our partners um and so if you go into the EAS app right now you'll see the ones that we featured for this quarter some very very exciting ones and we're dropping some very cool ones tomorrow as well especially in the move ecosystem we've got one coming up tomorrow that you'll be able to check out on our announcements and a second one as well that we're announcing uh on Thursday but what's the goal with EA well I said earlier that the mission is to bring the next billion developers into web 3 and it starts by making the web three experience very very simple so you'll see that there are a couple of key goals that we have which is to essentially bring new people into web 3 pretty much every single developer that comes into the E Community is net new so we're not trying to fish out of the existing web 3 pool of developers as we all know it's very very small it's probably everybody who's at East Denver right now and maybe a couple of extras who are grinding back home but the way that we reach Mass adoption is by bringing a billion developers into web 3 and that is only by making it much much easier and so the EA app allows people to learn about web3 here is just a couple of screenshots about the way that it works you'll go in it's a gamified very simple experience and really you go all the way from building to deploying in just a couple of minutes up here you can see the xrp LED ler so we recently launched the challenges on the evm side chain for The xrp Ledger I was just opening the keynote together with the co-founder of Ripple or co-creator of the xrp Leisure David SW this morning and we were chatting about how actually eza developers have now accounted for 4% of network activity and that's just 5 weeks into launching so very impressive stuff very impressive Builders um we're really really excited about what we're able to build here are just a couple of numbers to W you're appetite as to what is actually going on this is again just the hash 60 days of xrp Ledger which we launched recently we've since actually these slides uh were made we've had now 990,000 people who have started The xrp Ledger challenges and we have really only been five weeks in so extremely exciting we literally you know couldn't be more impressed by the number of people who are participating as part of it and really it comes down to one thing which is weird easy take a very different approach to attracting developers and it really comes down to our secret source which is we understand that everybody has uh something unique that they have to offer whether they are just getting in as a rust programmer or C++ or whatever language they're learning they are going to be able to learn something new in the eza app but to get to a billion developers there aren't even a billion developers in web 2 so where does that number actually come from the reason that we have a billion developers that we are marketing is because web 3 fundamentally changes the game in web 3 everybody is a Creator right so whereas in web 2 you are more of a consumer you know you go on Instagram you go on Tik Tok you watch videos maybe you create a couple but you're never really developing that content you don't have any ownership over it even if you technically created a YouTube video If you created an Instagram video you don't really own it in the same sense right it's really that you've given it to the platform whereas if you create for example an nft collection and you monetize that you get pretty much 100% minus a very very small fraction of fees that you might pay to an nft Marketplace so that's just the tip of the iceberg and that's what we mean by a billion developers it's a billion developers a billion people who are building in this ecosystem who are creating their own things it's not necessarily people who need to write a single line of code even but as people who are creating and co-creating we heard earlier today from a couple of other Founders we heard from the founder of story protocol as well who is building the IP layer um there's all sorts of really really cool things that people are doing in order to bring more builds into the space and that's precisely what we're here to do to so that is pretty much what eza does that's how we're bringing a billion developers into web 3 this is really geared towards being a lightning torque and so that wraps up most of what I had to say today but there is one more thing that I'm announcing so earlier I just said that we're bringing a billion developers into web 3 and I said that how we've reached over 90,000 Builders just on The xrp Ledger challenges alone that is for a brand new ecosystem that's just launching the evm side chain is not even on Main net yet still on testnet but people are excited about it but there's one thing that was still missing in the eza cycle and today we're actually going to close that Circle and round it all off and that is that if you were a builder you really didn't necessarily have access to all these opportunities that maybe everybody before you did so let's say that today you were a developer you commented the eza app and for you maybe there are people who have already launched their own protocols maybe people who have launched their l1s and l2s but what is there for you what what can you actually do in terms of adding value and how do you actually add more net new developers into the space how can you actually empower the people around you to learn about it more as well this is all part of our mission to bring more developers into web 3 and so today we're really really excited to announce the eza fund one which is our ecosystem fund which we are launching it's a fund of $500,000 so half a million dollars which is going to be distributed did to developers in the ecosystem from eza um who are going to be able to put that towards anything it's going to be no strings attached you're going to be able to use that funding to put towards any initiative that you want and really the only thing that we are looking for is are you excited are you passionate about it and are you also number two excited about bringing more people just like you into the ecosystem again it can be eza related it could also be just related to hosting your own Workshop hosting your own Meetup hosting your own mini conference on campus and we want to give it all the way as quickly as possible as well this is just the first experimental fund that we're launching um and we're going to be launching a much bigger one very very soon after as well so if you are excited about that I'm going to put our socials up right here on the next slide and what we're going to be able to do is if you follow us on Twitter is just eore app um you can check us out there you can take a photo of it as well uh and just screenshot it um and we will be really Distributing these funds as quickly as possible I'm Phil I'm the co-founder of eza I'll be sticking around just for a second just down here as well if you want to find out more about it but really this pot of funding is here in order to empower you as Builders to build whatever you want to build uh and not let funding get in the way of it it's just the beginning so as I said this is going to be something that we launch and try to distribute as soon as possible and as quickly as possible and at the end of it we're also going to be making sure that you as developers get supported and connected up in the ecosystem as much as possible so there we have it the one final thing that I wanted to mention close out the eza loop we're growing extremely fast right now if you're excited about joining the community come find me after this talk uh we'll also have a party actually on Saturday so make sure you come along to that um come and find it either on our EA app twitter page we'll be there and we'll also be partnering with Stella on there they have um another fund as well which they are going to be sharing more about for their ecosystem too so uh if you are excited about building in the ecosystem further if you're excited about getting more just find us afterwards and thank you very much for coming along have a great e Denver
