Society Protocol: The Future of Human Coordination | Ashton Keys (Society Protocol) at ETHConf

ETHGlobalThu, Jul 9, 2026, 12:00 AM

In this talk, Ashton Keys introduces Society Protocol, which he frames as the evolution of blockchain systems to fulfill an entire state structure on chain through a paradigm he calls synchronized states, the future of human coordination. He argues coordination is humanity's superpower, since we are the only species that coordinates at planetary scale, and that improving it even fractionally benefits society more than any individual achievement. Coordination is not natural, so humanity developed systems like democracy, currencies, and governance to coordinate despite competing interests. The premier system of recent centuries has been the nation state, built on the double entry accounting age and its duplicated, fragmented contracts stored separately between counterparties. This gave us equality, democracy, and capitalism, but when technology is added, it drives centralization into gatekeepers. Ashton identifies eight pillars of a state structure beyond government (identity, monetary systems, societal state, time synchronization, shared reality of events, group decision making, the social contract, and value systems), noting all currently centralize into powerful gatekeepers who warp shared reality. He argues the 2,000 year double entry accounting age is ending, and that the transition began in 2009 with Bitcoin decentralizing money and 2015 with Ethereum decentralizing assets. But blockchains lack identity and Sybil resistance, so they cannot form people, governance, or all eight pillars, and their uneven social layer forces them into immutable pyramid structures. He reframes blockchains as two-dimensional clocks and synchronized state machines, and proposes evolving to four-dimensional synchronized state machines that unlock a triple entry accounting age. Society Protocol is a four-dimensional model world synchronizing identities, property, governance, and interactions together, unlocking Sybil resistance, identity, and direct programmable governance where changes update the whole social contract instantly. He walks through the eight pillars as programmable components, warns that centralized CBDCs are a competing path leading to a technofeudal dark age, and closes framing Society Protocol not as revolution but evolution built on Ethereum bridging web3 to web4, seeking committed builders ahead of a public fundraise in about six months. 00:00 Introduction 00:38 Coordination as Humanity's Superpower 01:12 Why Coordination Beats Individual Ability 01:33 How Humans Coordinate Through Systems 01:56 The Nation State as the Premier System 02:20 The Double Entry Accounting Age 02:50 How Duplicated Contracts Work 03:09 What the Nation State Gave Us 03:25 Why Technology Causes Centralization 03:38 The Eight Pillars of a State Structure 04:04 Why We Don't Control Our Own Identities 04:20 How Gatekeepers Grow Powerful 04:56 How Media Platforms Warp Shared Reality 05:44 The Stacked Problems of Centralization 06:09 Why It Looks Like the Apocalypse 06:30 The End of the Double Entry Accounting Age 06:59 From Bitcoin to Ethereum 07:23 Why Blockchains Lack Identity 07:42 Why Blockchains Get Forced Into Pyramids 08:07 Blockchains as Two-Dimensional Clocks 09:08 From Static Objects to Synchronized States 09:30 What Is Society Protocol 10:00 Unlocking Identity and Governance 10:44 Unifying All Eight Pillars Into One Machine 11:30 Pillar One: The Timeline 11:51 Pillars: State Sphere, Actors, and Money 12:09 Events and the Model World 12:30 Governance That Updates Society Instantly 13:00 The Social Contract and Protocol Effects 13:17 Value Functions and What Society Values 14:23 What It All Means for Global Coordination 15:42 Why Synchronized States Beat Nation States 16:26 A Modular System Like a Linux Foundation 16:49 Why CBDCs Are a Competing Path 17:38 The Risk of a Technofeudal Dark Age 18:01 Evolution, Not Revolution 19:10 A Call for Builders and True Believers 20:01 Building on Ethereum From Web3 to Web4 20:40 The Path to a Public Fundraise 20:59 Closing _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ *ETHConf 2026* ETHConf is a 3 day event for founders, industry leaders, and builders who are excited about the possibilities of building on top of Ethereum. Hello everyone, my name is Ashton, and I'm very happy to be here. I am very excited to talk about Society Protocol . This is the evolution of blockchain systems. This is the evolution of blockchain to fulfill a full-scale structure in the blockchain system and is a model of coordination states , which is the future of human coordination . Our world is moving towards a state of harmony.

When talking about coordination , we must recognize that coordination is a superpower for humans . That's it. We are the only race that can coordinate our civilizations on a planetary scale. What happens around the world affects me, even if we increase coordination by just 0.001%.

For society, it gives me a better life than anything I could have perfected in my entire life. It doesn't matter how smart or strong each of us is individually . What matters is how well we coordinate. That is what determines whether our life is good or not . We are very lucky to be in this country and be able to live a good life .

But, coordination does not come naturally. Naturally, humanity has learned to coordinate over time by using systems. We have fundamentally developed systems that improve our coordination . And we are not all in this together. We are not all naturally united.

So naturally all humans have competitive and cooperative advantages that coexist with each other at the same time. So if we naturally eliminate those systems , it leads to chaos and conflict . Over time we have become better at coordinating by using the underlying systems . They include democracy democracy , currencies, money, personality, and many other systems, religions, and governance . These are all coordination mechanisms that allow us to coordinate better.

The nation- state has been the leading system for the past few centuries, and the nation-state has been our system for the past three centuries . So let's talk about the nation state . The nation-state is a coordinating system that we use at a high level, based on the era of double-entry accounting and the concept of forged contracts . The entire nation- state structure is based on fake contracts, where we have marriage certificates, receipts, college graduation certificates . We will preserve everything as a fake contract .

These fake contracts are falling apart ; They are different. So when I sign a contract with someone , it doesn't go anywhere, it's just preserved between the people involved . Overall, that's how it works. So, nation states and this era of double-entry global accounting have given us wonderful things like equality, democracy, individualism, and capitalism. These have truly allowed our societies to rebalance the social pyramid horizontally, which was not possible in the past .

When you add technology to that mix , centralization happens. Why does technology primarily cause centralization and fake contracts? Because we want to bring the state of the community together , we get very powerful things when we do that , for example being able to see what's happening, but if we store the fake contracts separately, they're not as powerful . So the more technology there is, the more speed, the quicker it gets into the hub and spoke model, and that leads to centralization . So, when I talk about statehood , I'm definitely not talking about government.

We can call the government the brain of the state. The structure I am talking about extends beyond government ; It talks about these eight things , which I identify as the state structures that help us coordinate as a nation . The first is identity systems, where currently our identities are not stored by us and are not controlled by us . This means that our identities are actually stored between corporate databases and government databases, we know less about ourselves than they do. I don't know as much about myself as corporations do.

Most likely our monetary systems are stored with the gatekeepers in the banking system . Our social status is stored in corporate databases. This is again out of our control . So when we focus on all of this , there are two things that come up again and again in these eight pillars of cohesion that we are living in right now . What they are , they are broken .

They are centralized as gatekeepers controlling that entire pillar . And those gatekeepers do a lot of bad to other people because they grow up to be so powerful. Incredibly powerful. So if you look at the overall state of society, many people are walking blindly . They can't see it.

There are people who see it We use clocks for time synchronization. And our shared reality events, for example, happen through social media and media platforms. And those media platforms distort our shared reality by controlling algorithms . So the people who control that pillar can control our shared reality . So our group decision-making and governance structures use representative governance, we cannot make decisions directly.

So the social contract and value systems all work the same way , which means that basically they need gatekeepers. This centralization will accelerate over time , so this centralization has created many problems that cannot be solved at present. They all seem to pile up on top of each other and complement each other like a puzzle , which I hope indicates the uncertain times ahead . We have technological world governments and with all this censorship and censorship and economic problems , it seems like the situation is not going to get any worse . No one has a solution to problems like centralized AI, CBDCs, and the encroachment of governance systems .

What many people don't know is that this era of double-entry accounting is coming to an end. The entire era of double- entry accounting, which has lasted for the past 2,000 years, is now reaching its final chapter. That's why it looks like a disaster. It's a kind of cataclysm, but it means we're entering a whole new era of civilization and society . This is a massive transformation that has only happened once in the last 2,000 years.

This transformation seemed to begin with Satoshi in 2009 , when Bitcoin began to decentralize money and it seemed like we were heading in the right direction . When Bitcoin started decentralizing money , it seemed like we were on the right track . And then in 2015, Vitalik introduced Ethereum , which can also decentralize assets and all sorts of things . There is a problem with blockchain systems right now. They have one big problem that basically prevents them from doing all the other things .

The big problem is that they have no identity. They have no civil resistance. And without identity, we are not human. And when we don't have humans, we can't rule those machines. So we need a social layer to justify the machine and basically control it .

And that social layer is unevenly coordinated . It's not uncoordinated. The blockchain is unable to adjust easily because it is unevenly coordinated . They are being pushed into pyramid structures because they are considered unchangeable . And currently blockchains cannot form a state structure.

They cannot form the eight pillars of coordination because they lack identity and governance, and the shared reality within them is limited to monetary events. They just don't have those eight pillars. So what we really need to do is take another huge step forward; Blockchains are actually the evolution of clocks . People will soon realize this, but Satoshi actually invented a two-dimensional clock. Blockchains are synchronized state machines that synchronize state for a specific social layer.

Basically, that's what they do . That's what they always do . Every blockchain architecture has a social layer that seeks to synchronize any reality, such as money, fame, or identity; That social layer uses blockchains to synchronize state . So we need to evolve from a three-dimensional state to four-dimensional state machines; This is possible by correcting a small flaw in the way Bitcoin and Ethereum were designed, namely that they were based on immutable objects . And these synchronized state machines are not static objects.

None of these are permanent objects . The entire state of the machine is synchronized together as a single entity . So by unlocking that, we can unlock all the rest. And by unlocking those things, it ushers in the era of triple entry accounting , the era of synchronized states . What is the actual society protocol ?

This is a four-dimensional synchronized state model. This is a model world, which synchronizes the state of that model world for all of us in society , which we can basically keep in our pockets, right? We can use this to coordinate and maintain our state of reality . It stores living identities and how they interact ; It also stores property, governance, and how to manage it all together. In the final analysis, it unlocks cyber resistance , thereby unlocking identity, governance, and all.

Now we have identities in this synchronized state . We have people who we can govern together using this model world . What this means is that when we talk about a synchronized state , the Society Protocol and synchronized states can do the full range of things that countries can do more efficiently. I mean , they have eight pillars of coordination , but I'll explain that in a moment. What this does is transform the grassroots level of our societies, from the fragmented contracts we currently use, into a unified, synchronized state machine.

Okay. But what does it do? Therefore synchronized states can actually integrate the eight pillars of coordination into a single synchronized state machine, where they all work together and it is like one program within another . Basically we can run this state structure as a program . By integrating them, they become more powerful as you combine them .

They build on each other , and the more you add, the more powerful that coordinating mechanism in society becomes. So they all actually support each other. And what are those eight stages we are talking about ? The first is the timeline. That's a blockchain architecture, right?

So the timeline is our synchronization mechanism that synchronizes our society. This is about synchronizing time, instead of using clocks to synchronize time right now, we can synchronize the public state of society, which allows us to coordinate in many dimensions, not just the single digit of time . The second is the state sphere, which is like the immutable state of the blockchain. So blockchain stores immutable state, which allows us to preserve our histories forever , which is a great thing. The third is actors, that is, identities.

So now let's say we have an identity in this synchronized state , and they're all different . They all have different lives . They do different things, and through this consistent history, we can build trust and reputation . The fourth is the monetary system, which is power and theoretically perfect money. The fifth is our events, where we can interact using this model world , meaning I can interact with all of you around the world through this computer program that is synchronized as a single reality .

Next is governance, which allows for any type of direct rule we like . Everything in the system is programmable and we all interact directly with the synchronized state, without intermediaries. What this means is that it unlocks governance in any way we want . If we want conviction voting, quadratic voting, or something else, we can govern that synchronized state that way . And when we govern it , it basically...

it instantly updates the entire social structure, like the social contract, for everyone . For example, if we want to increase taxes , we can implement it throughout the entire state structure by changing the governance decision . Next is the social contract, which is made up of these things, and these are basically protocol effects. Every blockchain already has a social contract . The last are value functions, which determine what society considers valuable .

So every recognition in the system is programmable so we can promote things . We can promote anything throughout the entire synchronized state . So it's a good idea to spend a little more time on value functions . They are a value system of synchronized states. They decide what the collective values and that's where the money flows .

Money is a monetary system because they are all synchronized and programmed together. We can automatically provide rewards for valuable work that was never possible in society before. Currently we are in horizontal rebalancing, where we manually rebalance tasks like this . Value functions are modular. So different synchronized states add them in different ways.

They coordinate society by aligning the interests of each individual actor with the collective, and this affects every actor in the state structure, which is very powerful because we can encourage everyone . For example, I can't do that in today's nation-state structure; I can't even encourage everyone in this room encourage everyone in this room . We can provide this to everyone involved in the entire state structure. What does this mean? This means we can get instant coordination around the world for civil resistance identities, with precise money and an unchanging history.

It enables equal access to social contracts, a global shared reality, coordinating society, regulating AI, coordinating each individual actor to do what is best for the collective, returning ownership of identity, assets, and data, providing equal access to governance for all citizens, and increasing trust with transparent identities . If you think about how many people in society store duplicate contracts, it would be half of the city . But the world really... really... Sorry, I can't stop.

I have to move on . Decentralization of power structures , reduction of bureaucratic cost, making property events and governance decisions of all actors in the system programmable and accountable with code. Wow. Wow. You know these synchronized states can do all this by unlocking civil resistant identities in synchronized state machines .

Synchronized states could accomplish everything that countries currently do, and they could do it 10 to 100 times better . What? By uniting the states. So the transition from nation- So the transition from nation- states to synchronized states . The truth is that there is no way to compromise old structures.

The truth is, we are in an unprecedented time in history where old structures are becoming worse and worse. They can't be fixed, the more centralized it becomes, the worse it gets . So the protocol is a gateway to the next era of human civilization. That is, that is. The longer humanity remains in its old ways , the worse it will become.

That's how it works. The sooner we change, the better. This is the only way out of this situation. One small thing, there will be no single society protocol. We're actually like the Linux Foundation, building a code base for synchronized states.

So every instance of synchronized states is different , it's a modular system, everything is different . They encourage different things . They have different value systems . They have different governance systems . Everything, everything is different in synchronized states .

So synchronized states are the only way forward for humanity, but there are actually two paths here . What people don't know yet is that CBDCs are also synchronized states, and what's going to happen with CBDCs is that they will compete with each other and upgrade . When there is identity and money in the CBDC , there is nothing stopping us from adding governance to these systems and we can vote directly in the CBDC itself. People aren't discussing this enough . We can add social media directly to that CBDC .

But the problem with CBDCs is that they are centralized at source and they have no real path to decentralization. So that would bring about the techno- feudal dark ages we're talking about for 10 generations . Very bad times, bad things, bad things are happening happening . So we do n't have infinite time to wake up and build a society protocol, the only way forward is CBDCs, both of which would render the Nation State useless . No matter which synchronized state you choose, one of them is going to happen, I promise you .

So Society Protocol is not a revolutionary movement. Society Protocol is an evolution in state structure. This is not a bottom-up or top-down movement. It's both . Nation states can use the Society Protocol and they can use synchronized states .

They can switch to synchronized states. So too can any small group, any collective ranging from two people to thousands or even hundreds of thousands of people . It is a movement from top to bottom and from bottom to top . So stablecoins, CBDCs, and the Chinese social credit system, all have the same CBDC structure. They are three-dimensional blockchains blockchains that basically store objects in a centralized manner.

So we do n't have infinite time to change. If we wait too long, the opportunity for choice is lost, because eventually control over society becomes too powerful, and these 3D systems cannot decentralize power . We will remain in the era of double- entry accounting for a long time , and it will truly bring about the darkest days in history . I guess so because the technology is all ready , the truth is that we are becoming more centralized every day and the more centralized we become, the more those who control power do evil to the rest . That's just human nature .

So what can you do to avoid that dark age? If this interests you , if this speech caught your attention , we are looking for people who are truly committed and want to build a better world . True believers, people who believe in this project . This project is not a job. This is a movement to bring the world into a different era of civilization.

So we need builders, investors, collaborators, advisors, and community partners. We know how to build it. know exactly how to build this. And this project will truly create trillions of dollars of value . Anyway, this is n't about money.

That's not really what this is about. We are a decentralized and distributed organization. People from all over the world are welcome to come with nicknames. The way our community is being formed is that you can join the work under a pseudonym or your legal name. But you don't need the legal name of your double-entry accounting era to work in the triple-entry accounting era.

That's not necessary at all. We are building a Web 3 Outpost on Ethereum , which will bridge from Web 3 to Web 4 . So on Ethereum we can build an identity system that bridges Web 3 to Web 4, and we can use it to run a globally distributed organization . We are currently looking for some key roles . This is the first speech I am giving about this project .

So I'm really excited about presenting this , there are some key roles right now and it's really a project that's made for the people. We will do the fundraising later. For now For now , we are raising awareness about the project to let people know that it is possible and how to do it . In about six months, we are going to raise public funds to fund the development of the project . This really needs to happen with the support of the public, we're not trying to sell this to venture capitalists.

This is truly a project for the people. That's it, that's all . That's Saudi protocol.
