FtC x EC Hackathon | Workshop: DAOIP 5 Metadata Standard Introduction (Oct 2024)

hello everyone um welcome uh nice to meet you all and I'm Rashmi and I'm from dstar I'm a developer at dstar I also do research uh and unofficial V uh so today we are all here to uh learn a bit about da5 uh and see that we have uh some grants in FTC haon that's ongoing right now um I would love to walk you through D5 how it got how we got started with the grant metadata standard um what it is what the vision is and um a couple of possible use cases um so let's get started um I sh my screen just a second okay can you all see my screen okay um so yes welcome to the D workshop and uh today's agenda will be just like a brief introduction on what the dat to standard is we'll uh walk through a bit of like state of web three grants support and what is star5 uh importance of it resources and the challenge statements that get provided uh in the hackathon and uh uh Q&A session so let's get started um di5 dow5 is uh the metadata standard for Grants uh which involves um two roles um the specification this is actually a technical specification for metadata um you know Grant systems have their own way of uh accepting applications um pre-process and post-processing it and Publishing the reports and everything um the reason this metadata standard was designed for was to couple of use cases to uh increase the interoperability between gr systems and tooling and uh to make it easy for grantees to uh view the information of what going on in the grant system um and also once this metadata is public and put into a data Lake uh this enabled so many use cases um and that's that was one of the reason D5 came into uh life so in this technical specification we have four main components uh the grant systems Grant tools projects and applications which are usually the uh components of uh the whole Grant life cycle so before we dig into the whole specification I wanted to give you a bit of context on where did we originate the di5 standard from um and everything I hope you can see my whole screen and not my whole not the specific tabs yes okay thank you so much so uh dstar uh is an organization where we uh create standards uh metadata standards and we have like di 1 2 3 4 5 and our parent organization is metag um focuses on R&D in3 ecosystem overall um so one of the branch of medov is uh grants Innovation lab who worked on the state three grants report um in 2023 uh mainly written by Eugene and Marshall uh in 2023 uh they uh you know they covered some of the grant programs that are active and Sunset and some of the other Grant operators too um this uh in this report they cover what are the uh what does the individual Grant um system do what are the missions what are the grant processes like um what's going well in that program what's going uh what could be improved and uh all of these metrics um so through this uh all of this and you can see in the table of contents um that that the active programs Sunset Grant programs and quadratic funding Grant operators uh in the depth all of the grant programs have been explored um once we uh you can read through all of this report individually if you're interested in specific uh Grant system and but today in this Workshop we won't be doing that because this is a long report um straightly jumping to the Keys and takeaway section uh the point was from the keys and takeaways we see uh that there's a need for uh more transparency there's a need for like a better uh assessment of things and uh reporting of the grant systems even for Grant systems themselves and even for grantees um so all of this uh takeaways even from like 2023 report report and also there was another 2024 report where uh we also explored some of the uh new Grant programs and the takeaways was we moving towards more of the data oriented uh landscape of uh operations in within Grant systems so a metadata standard uh seemed a requirement here and um here in the takeaway section here yeah here in the uh challenge one of the challenges faced by Grant programs was impact measurement uh so uh the metadata standard also has some parameters where you can uh run statistics and reports on how how impactful a grant uh round has been for a grant system so um all of these takeaways from the report reports that we've done and uh we also did web three Grant Summit based on all of this research and Report uh it was a two-day Grant Summit and here in this uh once we did like a small Workshop like an exercise on uh what goes what goes wrong or what could be improved in the processes so usually in the grants uh grants life cycle before applying during the application process after application process what uh the parent identified uh some of the some of the issues so they put that on the board and we have a whole report on it so you can see in this small picture that again the transparency reporting and all of that is highlighted in some of these issues um so from all of this uh research that we've done uh we created the T5 the technical standard uh for the programs themselves to adopt and Implement um so let's go over di5 now um as previously mentioned uh we have four main components uh Grant systems Grant pools projects and applications these are components not rules there are only uh there are two to three roles here uh in this so there are Grant systems are a role and projects are a role and another category of uh role that is played by is Grant managers so here uh in this we specify uh technical specification for to publish data by Grant systems um this data is published in Json LD format uh this is the Json LD schema for Grant systems um here uh see that just this won't be enough uh this grants pool URI that we say that a grant system should publish should be published either via di2 or di3 now what is di2 Java ip2 is a a specification again for t uh to publish their information such as name description uh members Ur proposals U contracts URI all of these members URI proposals and contracts U just publish the uh list of members uh of that Dow where a list of proposals of that Dow and a list of contracts of that time so this technical standard was for um you know to enhance D disc discoverability and also to promote uh regulatory adoption so dow2 is simple this if you can see this is the whole thing of it uh dowj scha for Dow U is just has name of the Dow description members U also has a schema that members you should be for proposals and activity uh um I would say that members proposals and contracts are the most important Fields activity log and governance Ur we do realize that we don't have enough information or tools or just enough Clarity in data to publish those uis systematically um so we've been successfully able to publish members URI and proposals URI and also contract you um for example I can if you want to see an example of how does this look like you can uh visit d.org um where on the Explorer you can see optimism collectives Alex Daves yes adoptions uh optimism adoptions arbitrum and uh various this U Explorer only lists the ja ip2 adoptions uh right now we don't have we haven't updated our website to also list out5 adoption uh but yeah if you want to see how does the D look like uh what does it involve you can visit D um moreover now5 um I I want to just pause a bit here and just see if you have any questions or do you want me to go into depth of something more do you want me to explain D if I a bit more um I'll take that as to continue okay so yeah di IP 2 want we have di2 um in dow5 section yeah Grant systems will be publishing the grant poool URI and uh Grant poool URI has a schema of this you can see the Grant Pool name is it still open is it closed application URI consists of all the applications for that Grant Pool um the Edition information for the Grant Pool um on how the governance side of things operate would be in governance you um and attestations require credentials these are additional Fields if you dig into other dips you might be you might if you can you could um and here email image and coverage just for like you know identity uh purposes of the grand pool and stuff um now when it comes to projects uh projects also publish di2 uh but also they publish another field called project U um where say project is an entity which is um which has two or three different uh project within themselves and are applying for Grants so in Project they would list all the um applications of that entity uh for the grant pools um in projects URI that is published by projects they have content members for that project at a stations uh if if it's an URI who wants to it's an URI who pointing to the Json of trusted issu is like if this projects is not published by the project themselves uh it could be published by a trusted issuer like maybe a brand manager so that attestation you and I would be here and uh in the applications this is for grand pool um here again we have uh Grant F gr F ID and name project and funds how much funds did they ask and how much funds was approved and where was the payout address um and uh again I want to show the data for dip5 uh we've been working with osss uh open source Observer so to create the DP FS um open source Observer has already been working on collecting all of this plant data um we work with them to publish daifi Uris so here is the data where we can find it can see that arbitrum Foundation Dow drops optin optimism and Stell we have to five uis for that um grants pool URI consists of all of this uh information about Grant Pool step one uh for foundation we we managed to get the data for step one uh round so we have the data for that and uh step one's applications Ur you can see all the applications uh who applied for step one who were approved how much did they get approved for and all of that data similar information can be found for uh these other ities D Drops op optimism and Stellar um Stellar BR pool we have about 29 rounds data here um would love to see how we can come up with a use case uh to use of this to make use of this data or need reports um next uh the overall vision for Dow IB fund is uh in this so um first uh we want to share the link with us as well sorry would you be able to share the link with us yes yeah for sure I have created uh this resources list so all the all the pages and everything that I went through uh in this Workshop you can find the links of it here I'll be sharing this link um in the chat so yes um here in the Fig Jam board uh the D5 adoption strategy right now we have is um to First collect uh and create data pipelines for historical and life BR data right now uh uh we have managed to do the sorry let me just get this yeah managed to get historical data uh like for Stella and for optimism for arbitrum as much as we could get uh we are using Oso's uh infrastructure to store that and um we have this dii data schema Transformer where um any any data that gets updated in this data folder of OSS funding um say a new uh Grant system agrees to provide that information to us that data would be stored here uh we have get H workflow running to run di5 uh scripts which is here uh to create the Uris in Json so it would create a new folder here and again publish grand school U and applications um this is right now the once we have the Uris published uh we have the API interface which is not currently live uh we have to get that done soon too um the API interface would be able to would be able to provide information like say you visit Dow 5all endpoint and you would be able to see um the names of the grant systems who have published uh Grant Pool and applications so then you can dig into deeper and get gr School un for arbitrum or transp uh for any other organization that's been listed uh programmatically right right now uh understand I understand that this might not be a good way to you know get the Json format you would have to go visit github's raw uh link to and then put that in your program and then fetch it and stuff um I'm working with the API to make it a bit easier to get all that um next would be uh the larger vision that we have for D5 is once we have the data L uh we'd be able to create uh a layer or a protocol for like something uh with sign in with D5 um so we know that questbook right now is one of the grant manager they have this um program running like get your profile referred to Grant managers once you click on connect with us they ask you to share your projects information details and everything uh one and then behind the scenes they work with connecting relevant uh Grant managers to get your project funded so uh we want to we want to make all of that easier uh we also speaking with questbook in order to get some of the gr data and work with us on the D5 um so the larger Vision again is um sign in with star5 uh right now you the processes to fill the Grant application might be to connect your wallet um you have uh Prof profile associated with your uh wallet and then you fill out the application uh you go to gitcoin you fill out an application you would request work you fill out another application but at the end of the day your project details remain the same right like the uh your mission and vision all of that uh is the same and there's another project like KAG gap which uh which allows you to like you know publish all of this information like you have your project details you also enter manually the list of um grants that you received say you received some grants in optimism RPG F1 that you would add there and next uh after five months later you receive a grant from gitcoin or some other thing so all of your projects um information is stored in Kap but we want to create an interoperable layer uh we once we have the metadata uh layer uh working with all of these Grant systems and projects uh and Grant pools it would just make the uh data flow of things easier so in this visualization uh imagine you're a project uh there's Grand system a grand system B they have like three pools running around and uh you have to apply for like four of them because they involve these Grand pools are focused on different things maybe your project also qualifies for governance and also for public good so uh in such use cases like that you would be applying pH applications um just to make all of this easier dow5 metadata aims to uh first we you can see the projects umor you can see projects you this publishes the information about your project the basic profile page information and application is related to Grand pool and um you can also see funs as fun approved funs approved and payout address you can definitely add more fields to this if you feel that's important and if you're able to get that information um and here in Grant Pool brand systems also publish their Grant URI and all the applications within it so one can keep a track of which project how much did they receive when where and from which Grant system maybe we want to uh filter out uh the projects who received grants from optimism to uh further you know we want there maybe there might be some use cases or anything maybe we want to filter in uh projects who have received from brand from optimism so um in creating an interoperable data layer uh is possible with uh metadata standard and that is what we aim to create with this um and the first step what we uh what we did to do this is to create a data link of all the gr information and then uh reach walk slowly towards this vision of sign in that's St five um so this is the larger Vision uh and here I also will be sharing the link to the speak J board if you want to uh learn the flow of adoption of dips you can see it here um if you're an entity what type of entity you are You' go to D if you're a d you would publish D2 if you do provide grants you Grant schol which is comes in a DI 5 and then if you uh provide grants uh if you don't try grants but if you manage grants you would publish um di 32 and five um here those are the these IPS which would apply here that means you would publish a d bya d P3 like at test stations and aend GR schol I to that so uh you can walk through the flowchart I'm available please pay me anytime uh you have any doubts during the haon I know I'm a developer myself uh I understand we don't really have a set timing for working things um just ping me an exam and I'll reply as soon as I can um and uh after this full chge so what else is that um yes so the resources of things all that we walked through today uh and I shared the grants report we also have like um another uh public publication by Grant Innovation Labs was um case studies for retr funding and we also had um this one Grant maturity index um so I'll be sharing the links to all of this um and you can bre through it contact me if you have any doubts um Channel statements yes Shing statements right now here are um with the [Music] published uh dip5 data uh we would love for you to have a use case and use the D5 and um we have historical data maybe you could run some analysis maybe you could create some flowcharts or some statistics or reports um here you can in the takeaways I would really love for you to uh see the takeaways of all these State both 2023 and 2024 state of gr report and um you would be able to find uh a use case to solve that challenge which are listed in this uh why so uh here you'll see again the reports or maybe comparison between uh different types of fun mechanisms maybe retr pgf or um quadratic funding comparison how did how did they do well or maybe you can find a project which received uh fundings from both you can create project profiles in some way um any just anything and anything that comes to your mind um so yeah um and we have the $2,000 Bounty for it uh um we would love for you to we would love to see something yeah just anything that P pushes forward
