In accessibility in Web3/NFTs panel we will discuss different learning styles, the disconnect between Web3 projects and audience/learners, while learning some of the onboarding avenues that can be built to help create awareness and application. Having the fundamentals are paramount in creating the cornerstones for a continued adoption and understanding of Web3/NFTs. In order to have creative, meaning conversations we need to understand the basics and the norms of Web3/NFTs. Teachers should be aware that utilizing their skill sets can help facilitate and advocate for the space as a whole as the space enters the mainstream over the next few years. how's everyone doing today doing good are we losing our voices because I am this is day two um thank you everyone for tuning in into our accessibility in web 3 and nfts my name is Valerie Carrillo I am the founder of red rug edutainment which is a web 3 production and management company and also the founder of San Diego nft Friends Community we meet about once a month in San Diego um so accessibility in web 3 and nfts is very very uh close to me because it's very important that I make web 3 understandable and accessible for my community so I'm really excited to present to you today our speaker that I'll be interviewing Keegan he's actually my significant other this is our first time on stage together so super thank you thank you um but he's going to be someone who's really great to learn from not just because he's my boyfriend but also because he's 11 year public educator so he's going to give us some tools today to make you the best teachers that you can be to onboard your community your family your friends strangers you meet on the street so give a warm welcome to Keegan escriba what's up Denver how we doing all right okay wow so what three uh youth has D was our first uh web3 event last year so crazy that we're on stage today yeah this is amazing so first off thank you everybody for coming out to support really appreciate it uh shout out to all the volunteers everybody that put this together Justin Layla Josh shout out to opolis thank you to our sponsors um so uh before we get into the meat and potatoes of how everyone can be the best teachers um tell us a little bit about your background yeah so um currently I still work full-time in San Diego Unified School District which is the second biggest school district in the state of California so I currently work at the district office in the resource teacher role and so I'm under the physical education health and athletics department uh right under my program manager and director so I'm third third in the rankings of command if you will um but prior to that and I've only been there year a half I was 10 years in the classroom teaching physical education English ald academic language development and Avid which is a college preparatory program that's amazing and what type of students are you teaching at San Diego Unified School District yeah so when I was in the classroom uh you know the students they were high needs students and so what that means is that they came from a background where they didn't always have the supports that they needed they didn't always have both parents present so they needed a lot of attention a lot of energy a lot of guidance a lot of structure and so that's the kind of students I was working with at the time let's give a shout out to our teachers in education you guys don't get enough love so uh so since you've been in the district for 11 years with someone from your background how did you find yourself into the web 3 space yeah so um you know as far as how I got into the space you know this journey started back in 2021 uh I kind of like started to hear things about it in January one of my friends was doing some stuff with NBA Top Shot which some of you probably heard uh I wasn't involved in it I just heard about it I did not participate that was in January in February I started to hear about dead mouse was going to be doing some nfts and I was like oh that's cool I'm a big fan of dead mouse for about 10 years then I heard Tom Brady is doing the blockchain and autographed in like March and then I heard garyvee he's like getting louder and louder about like shout out to the V friends I know a few friends are in here he got louder and louder about basically the whole entire space cryptopunks ethereum nft learned this metamask and so I had followed him for eight to nine years you know some people are a fan some people aren't but I was always following him prior to that and so as he started to get louder I already trusted him and so for me once he announced in April that he was doing his own project be friends I was like okay now I need to stop and start to understand like what's what right absolutely so let's get into a little bit about your experience because I think if we hear about your experience um doing you know teaching uh physically and then when we went into the pandemic right I'm sure we can relate a lot because we all went through that but um tell us um tell me about your in-person classroom experiences yeah so uh it kind of varied but you know over the course of 10 years I was at two different School sites uh and I taught physical education English and ald but when I was teaching physical education outside you know you don't always have this same structures that you have in the classroom because you have about 45 50 students and there's no walls so the guidance that you need to provide you need to be super dialed in and a lot of the teaching that takes place in physical education is a lot of modeling and demonstration so for that teaching style you're going to see a lot of kinesthetics teaching learning and teaching happening for example when you're demonstrating I'll be the teacher and I'll be demonstrating how to throw a football or how to kick a soccer ball or how to do a forward swing with a tennis racket so I'll demonstrate those students will come up and go through the process to get the repetitions so that they can get the experience doing it firsthand Hands-On that's the kinesthetic part um is there other different like learning styles yeah and so in the classroom when you're teaching English or aod the structure is different you know you'll have the classroom with the walls to really guide the students and you need to have it dialed in in my opinion you'll have the warm-up you'll have the agenda you'll have different Learners learning in different ways you'll have project-based learning you'll have think pair share where I say you say we say so the guidance that's taking place is a lot more uh refined versus out outside in P where it can be very fluid and you need to adjust on the Fly and then how did you establish um I guess we can call it classroom Community culture yeah so for classroom Community culture um you know it varied from in the classroom to online which I think we're gonna get to after but you know being present with the students and actually learning and being there and helping them along the way is something that's going to be super beneficial for them to really engage with the teaching and actually have good rapport so that you can really build off of that and setting the structures in the class establishing Norms like you know if they're sitting there how are you going to like respond to the teacher make sure you raise your hand make sure you do all these proper things so those same principles need to be applied here in the web 3 and nft space if you don't have your Norms established you're going to get confusion and you're going to get people that are lost or disengaged and not participating right so it's important to understand um establishing vocabulary Norms understanding that there's different uh learning styles as you mentioned kinesthetic learning vision visual learning so providing Graphics if you can right tell me a little bit about what that transition was like though when you went from in person and then pandemic happened and now you're on Zoom so I feel like a lot of us can relate to that because a lot of us spend time on Twitter spaces on Zoom meetings how can we connect with our people that are coming into web 3 when we don't necessarily always have the in-person opportunities so I think if we hear about your Zoom experience with the students that could help us understand a little bit more how we can better ourselves as teachers yeah so you know back on March 11 2020 that's when you know things got really crazy with the pandemic and we went online teaching in the state of California so we were teaching online for over a year and so for Monday through Friday I was basically live streaming on Zoom for three to five hours so there was three classes one hour each an hour of office hours and then other supports for guidance and like uh answering questions so during that time period it was really unique in a sense of how you needed to build the connection with the students because in person you get to like see like who's who you can like understand these are my leaders these are my followers these are my jokesters these are the clowns like these are the you know who's who in the class but when you don't have that presence and you just have a zoom screen with a little box and a little name how are you supposed to build the connection with those students so for me that's where I needed to start to establish some norms and come up with some different things that everybody struggled to do you know the students the staff the community and so one thing I did was set the Norms I played music at the beginning of my class because that was the signal for the students to see okay we're starting and then when the song ends then we have our warm-up then we get into the discussion and then the leading question and separate from that I would do little things like okay uh what's your energy level like today on a scale of one to ten so then they would start responding in the chat and it would go like a one a two a ten and then like I call them out and I'd recognize each of their names I'd be like oh Stephanie you're at a level 10 so that means you can help with the questions and then they change their answer real quick no no no I don't want to respond so then I'm at a level seven you know so those are different Avenues to create the pathways so that you have the connections and then once you have that you can really start to do some learning and then over time I started to build the Rapport and participate with them in the activities because I was teaching physical education on Zoom at that point and ald and so I was going through the motions and doing the workouts I was posting up the graphic organizer so they could see visually for our visual Learners okay this is how the workouts look and then I was doing it with them I'd hit the bell for each workout you know we do arm curls and then like hit the bell and then the next workout would do you know so then if anyone is interested maybe in creating like a a live Zoom uh web 3 coursework or something like that like if we're do if you're doing a live you know session with a group of people then maybe trying to play around with certain cues like ring a bell or Play Music as you said to so people are ready to start the session yeah so I mean that's where I really saw like a common parallel between like the digital space right now with what's happening in web 3 and nfts and blockchain is that everything that I had participated in on during Zoom during the pandemic for over a year a lot of those things carried right over into what I started to see in Discord connecting with who's in Discord on uh what is it called the uh Twitter spaces or on clubhouse you would start to see these same things and again that's vocal that's like you know verbal those are the verbal Communications with the students or with the Twitter people that are there the community you don't always get to see who that is but you can hear their voice and so again that's a different learner and teacher style that's happening and I know something that you do too because obviously we can't always see face to face like if it's a Twitter space or a clubhouse like you also provide Graphics right like if you're doing a Twitter space you'll pan up a tweet that has some sort of graphic that breaks down like web through education when you're teaching in the like web three space as well right yeah having the visuals to reference to and guide to and navigate with lead-in questions are super important and that's what I feel like I've noticed over the span of almost two years is that there's a little bit of Disconnect in the space where I'm not seeing that from different projects different Founders different communities and so if you don't emphasize those points again you're gonna have people that are disengaged not participating fuse you can't just post something up once in announcements and then expect everybody's gonna get it or just do like okay here's our road map for the next year it's like okay just because you posted up once doesn't mean it's not it doesn't mean it's being absorbed you have to emphasize all avenues and be president regularly for your community just like I was in the class and every other teacher does Monday through Friday day in and day out because when you have five class periods of 30 to 35 students in public education that's 150 to 180 personalities you're seeing in one day so for me doing these Twitter spaces in my opinion it was a lot easier than running a zoom class with standard with the warm-up with the lesson with the cues doing the Grays doing the personality like right yeah anyway so clearly you have a lot of experience as you said you've been in education for 11 years um and obviously not all of us can be amazing teachers like you and have the background and experience that you do but I understand uh that we are providing a slide today right that you want to show us that can help guide us to become better teachers in the web 3 and nft space as we on board the next wave of people and generations that are to come right so we have a slide it's a super technical slide I pulled this from the filing cabinets all right so can you guys see that do I need to move the chair out of the way so you guys can see it better all right okay so let me kind of just briefly go over this yeah explain to us a lot of words on the screen tell us real quick what is this that we're looking at so for me I kept this for a lot of years and like I said I brought it out of the filing cabinet but really this emphasized a lot are like really really structural points so any t-shirt that goes through a teaching credential program you have to go and learn a lot of these basic principles of Bloom's taxonomy the levels of thinking that are taking place and so there's higher order levels of thinking and lower level thinking uh that that happens and at each level you'll see the key words remembering understanding applying analyzing evaluating and creating so right now what you're seeing here in my opinion a lot of the devs a lot of the people that are building out all these systems and structures they worry up here imagining creating level learning right and so what we need to emphasize in my opinion from a professional educator is that these basic principles the foundational pieces are cornerstones for helping to take this space to move it forward because if we can't even do the basics of explaining memorizing or identifying certain little pieces how are we supposed to have creative conversations that are going to take place in the future how are we going to bring our friends and family into this space so that they feel comfortable and so in order to do that we need to make sure that we understand what's their learning level at are they Advanced are they intermediate are they beginners and so these guiding principles here are the words and vocabulary that you would use to develop in your assessment tools to help establish that for example when you have your questions you would ask distinguish the difference between a polygon blockchain and Bitcoin blockchain so if that person can't answer and distinguish the two then they're not at this level so that means we're going down another level to know okay where are they at well they're just at the identifying I can identify two different crypto wallets I can identify metamask I can identify whatever it is so again these are lower level levels of thinking these are higher levels of thinking but this is where we would all strive to be and this was actually also utilized in my Avid teaching but it was really Universal for all the subject matters it didn't matter if it was math science English physical education this was super important for having an endpoint and a goal in teaching is backwards planning you have the unit you'd have the lessons that scale up to go along with it during a physical education you would have all the fundamental pieces in order to get to the end result so you learn the basics of how to dribble in soccer how to shoot in soccer how to pass in soccer team building skills communication strategy leading up to the overall end goal which is let's participate in a game legitimately but understanding all those fundamental pieces and so for here this is the same thing happening if we don't understand these fundamental pieces and it's at a gradual onset we're going to have a lot of confusion which I'm sure we've seen with our in real life friends that don't really understand what's happening here so it's very important that we emphasize that we're going at the right speed going from mile but we can't go to zero to 100 real quick that's the bottom line oh yeah that that's for sure like I know when I came into the space I had no idea you know about solidity or something right like I had to memorize the vocabulary in web 3. so for those of you who are looking to provide accessibility for people who are new and coming into the web 3 space take a picture of this if you're watching online on on the stream screenshot this because you can use this right as a road map or the blueprint right if you're trying to create a coursework if you're trying to have meetups if you're trying to do Zooms for people that are trying to get web 3 especially when I think about you know the younger generation I mean they're using the technology but still right there's they are still developing developing their brains so you have to meet them at the level of where they're at right and that's again that goes back to knowing your learner and knowing what learning style is going to be the best for them maybe they learn better better visually maybe they learn better and think they're share maybe they learn better going through the process on project-based learning or maybe they need to actually just listen in here so it just depends on the learner that you have but if you don't take the time to get to know your community get to know your students you may just be all over the place or you may not emphasize the right points it has to be mindful and intentional so again this isn't mine I didn't Design This I just use this as a reference to that's Bloom's taxonomy you can Google it and you can read all about it but these are the main principles that are taught in a teaching credential program for all teachers so I mean yeah we obviously don't all take the teaching credential program but this is definitely something that we can utilize as a tool as we mentioned before um so just to briefly go over this again so there are two would you say like two levels right lower levels lower level and higher levels of thinking once you get to applying creating and evaluating excuse me analyzing evaluating and creating these are the higher level of Learners that are taking place and then those words are the key words you want to use when you're asking questions to your community right yeah yep these are all the vocabulary the vernacular that you need in order to help design those and again any teacher is going to have these skill sets it doesn't matter what subject matter it is if they've went through a teaching credential program they're going to have gone through this and seen this before I can also see this being utilized by creators who are you know creating Maybe music for their fans who are not necessarily web3 yet I can see people who are building their nft projects I need to onboard the next wave of people to break it down to provide education before you give them the white paper that's very technical right yeah I mean sometimes we're not already for a 40 page white paper to start reading understanding different principles within a project if we even know about a project because we don't have awareness cool well thank you for this brief overview of of what is it the bloom text Bloom's taxonomy levels of thinking Bloom taxonomy um so also let's also talk a little bit about um what you're doing now how are you educating in web 3 and nfts yeah so um I don't know if we want to put the other slide back too but yeah so currently what I decided to do is that you know after all the experience that I have and like I said I still work full-time 40 50 hours you know shout out to San Diego unified for helping me get here for this so anybody anybody I wish I could have been sponsored by my job anyway it's an education or in Esports like I need to talk and touch base because we are actually running that through our office as well and looking for collaborations Partnerships and in my role as a resource teacher I'm the one that handles Partnerships and the liaison that handles all that so we can talk after but what am I doing now well I started a YouTube channel called token talk because I felt very passionate about the space once I learned what was happening because for me I didn't have a tech background I didn't have the experience of having friends in the space you know early on in I had to learn at that time like I had to learn well what is ethereum what is an nft and I started connecting all those dots for me and once I understood oh this is how things function here's the mechanics I was like okay this is something big that's happening I've been very fortunate to see two Decades of technology I was born in 84. so for me having having the internet start to come about and really Blossom if you will not everybody got to see that I remember not having Internet I remember not having cell phones I remember not having a smartphone like we didn't always have Uber Lyft like doordash like those weren't Norms so these kids are used to that now so for me I could see the writing on the wall once I understood what was happening here with these principles that are being built and so I just wanted to take part as much as I can given the fact that I'm still working full-time like the free time that I have is basically all dedicated to the space so from my YouTube channel where I interviewed different Founders and different devs that are legitimately in the space in my opinion who are some of the founders you've interviewed uh so yeah different people uh Vinnie Hager Tony Herrera Frankie nine to somewhere around here garyvee AJ vaynerchuk Avery who was in the other thing before President of Vayner um OSF who's the co-founder of rep guy Gabe wise who you know and I know your YouTube channel isn't just about explaining what they do you make them break down like if they're explaining to a five-year-old right like yeah and I always fantasticized some main points that I think are going to be helpful for the audience because I kind of start to identify very easily when things are going over people's head so for me I just wanted to help document that because I do truly believe in five to ten years from now people are going to look back to see who are the actual Builders here taking part in this the people here at this conference in my opinion documenting their journey and they'll have that to refer back to like okay they were there and if they're still around they'll be there too and so I wanted to help bring that and actually like participate um and then separate from that you know I host a weekly teaching 10K TF teaching Tuesdays what's 10K TF uh so 10 ktf is a narrative project I'm not sure if anybody's heard of it they were just acquired by Yuga labs and so you know they have an incredible team uh people is a the founder uh Michael figgy's co-founder along with Tim Smith a phenomenal artist Robin so I was teaching Tuesday space and um they've been very um supportive for our community members because these are all community-run spaces there's a different one each day other than Saturdays and uh you know so they hired you as the well not hired you we're unofficial ambassadors if you will yeah but I mean but you're educating yeah they provided this hoodie you know and they put our name on the back and everything like Shameless but super cool for us to participate and have that connection to the project and actually have other community members written into the storyline so it's a super unique thing and implementing the technology with warm wallet and apcoin and we have changed you wanted to learn more about the 10K TF Project Connect with them backstage but our time is running out before we end this real quick what support are you looking for since you're representing San Diego Unified School District the second largest District in California yeah so um as I said I'm in the physical education health and Athletics office so one of the Avenues that we are having some support in right now and building out is the Esports uh so if anybody's into Esports or has any affiliation would love to chat and see if there's anything that we can do to collaborate our partnership so a really big opportunity to possibly release a pilot program in the second largest District so if you got an idea talk to this and any Educators in general if there's teachers here I would love to hear what you're doing what your thoughts are we can exchange ideas and discuss and see how we can work together awesome well thank you everyone for tuning in to our talk today make sure you follow us and see you guys have a good uh Innovation Festival thank you
