Inside Our Builder Residency in Buenos Aires | Funding the Commons

Funding the CommonsFri, Jan 9, 2026, 12:00 AM

The Funding the Commons Residency brings builders together to spend focused time working, learning from each other, and building things meant to be used. In Buenos Aires, we hosted 30 builders working across privacy, decentralized identity, and public goods funding. Over the course of the residency, they launched 42 projects, many of which are still active today. Teams formed in different ways, often through ongoing feedback, iteration, and collaboration. Come take a look inside the residency and hear about what residents worked on, how they collaborated, what came out of the time they spent together, and why spaces like these matter. The model of a residency or focused space and time for creators or creatives or designers [music] or artists especially is not new but I think it is relatively newer to the web 3 industry. We focus on having residencies that create the true container of what we believe a residency is for people to have time and space and clarity to focus and [music] uh do deep work and get to know each other.

[music]

I think there have been some really interesting collaborations just from ideas that some people have like given to other people and then somebody else builds it and then somebody builds something and somebody says oh that won't work because [music] of this and then they scrap that idea work on something new. On the first day I arrived uh very excited and I was sharing projects that I was building. I met Marco, another resident here, and I [music] explained to him what I was building at work, which is um an end toend encryption uh library. [music] And he was telling me that he was building a time capsule, and he was missing one piece, which was exactly included into the library I was building. [music] So within 2 hours of meeting each other, we actually finished a complete product here.

So that was one of the most interesting ways I've ever met anyone was just immediately become excited together and immediately build something everybody goes through during these times is kind of some sort of decentralized university. I think the cross-pollination of ideas and different perspectives [music] is super fertile and brings together the perfect kind of storm for types of ideas and innovation that's [music] really hard to capture otherwise. What's really [music] special to be in a container like this is it's so well curated and there's builders from all over the world and people are working on really interesting [music] uh use cases. We also connect all our builders with local actors and I think this is critical because they know the local context. This way our builders really know what are the challenges [music] that uh people actually face you know so they know how to build solutions that answer real needs that have strong market fit and that uh actually end up [music] helping the communities they're meant to serve.

Blockchain is permissionless. So anyone [music] can participate and we know that that states are designed the way they gaining people from transaction with each other from the governance [music] from accessing like certain physical territories but blockchain is above all of this. It's in parallel all of this and as I see for example here why in Argentina there is [music] amazing example when states pressing people people [music] go to blockchain. [music] If we look at one of the highest outputs of funding the commons, it is the uh taking ideas and mechanisms and early [music] stage talent and funding and capital and bringing those together to actually [music] create, generate and implement new projects, deploy them and get real users. That's what we are going for and we think that residencies [music] are the best way that we've found to achieve that outcome.

So, we're going to be doubling down on residencies in the future and bringing more and more institutional partners from outside of Web 3 to partner with us in making that realization uh come to be.
