Owning Your Web3 Name with ENS
Ethereum Malaysia·Sun, Oct 9, 2022, 12:00 AM
We host Makoto from Ethereum Name Service (ENS) to talk about blockchain domain names, its endless use cases and ENS's road towards decentralisation. --- Timestamps: 00:40 Announcements & Monthly Roundup 05:22 The State of ENS 31:21 Fireside Chat with Makoto --- Guest: Makoto holds the position of Javascript and Solidity Developer at ENS. He also maintains data dashboards covering ENS and other Ethereum data at Dune Analytics. Beyond ENS, he is founder of Kickback, a smart contract platform that incentivizes event attendance, and is organizer of the London Ethereum Codeup community. Ethereum Name Service (ENS) creates secure domain names for the decentralized world. ENS domains provide a way for users to map human readable names to blockchain and non-blockchain resources, like Ethereum addresses, IPFS hashes, or website URLs. The domains can be bought and sold on secondary markets. --- Target audience: Anyone interested to find out more about ENS and blockchain domain names!

all right thanks everyone for joining uh today is the 11th of november uh we have uh makoto from ens who's kindly sharing his time um so we don't have much time today so i will try and take not as much time to go through the typical stuff our sponsor is eta scan a quick message from the sponsor uh if anyone is interested to uh work in the blockchain space and if you're in malaysia feel free to apply um no matter whether you are technical or not there are a lot of rules there so please feel free to reach out to me if you are interested right so some quick announcements before we start uh there is gecko con that's happening uh from 17th to 19th if you haven't bought your tickets already i think the prices are a little bit higher now uh but you can still uh buy them and there's going to be a lot of stuff about nfts there there will also be a uh an in-person event early in december and i think etl will be supporting them i think we're still talking but yeah so it'll be event about nfts about kind of like the confluence of art and technology so if you're interested keep an eye out for that when they announce it um publicly then we can share the link for you to uh to know more and uh last quick announcement uh chiranjit who's in this call is doing a workshop on deploying your own nfts on polygon uh with your own smart contract not using like openc or something like that and that is tomorrow at 11 30 am so if you guys are interested um again keep an eye out i think we'll create a meetup page and share it in the telegram group so then you can rsvp and make sure you don't miss it all right uh so some quick um monthly roundup stuff from local news uh just today uh it went quite viral there is this uh for the muslims here uh there is a kind of new kind of guideline on paying zakat for crypto uh so you can check that out later uh and um namui i think i'm pronouncing it correctly um just kind of infamous uh songwriter in malaysia uh launched some nfcs and i think he saw like millions of dollars uh worth of uh nft songs uh our ex-prime minister double ex-prime minister um went on this long tweet thread about how people have been using his name to you know to shield this crypto scams and yeah so just saying that he's not involved and i don't know if anyone knows of this company it's called negra and apparently they have tokenized their equity on polygon that went around in the crypto news channels although i don't know any malaysian who know this company so if anyone knows feel free to mention in the chat as well and then some global news i think everyone should know right now uh the ens token uh governance token just launched um i think at least some people here would have gotten the airdrop and as bradley has tweeted you know it's a it's not necessarily money it's a responsibility and yeah we'll be asking makoto some questions about it later um adobe launched this uh nft feature where a content creator can kind of um it helps content creators come to to show that a piece of art that was created or nfc illustrated is um created by them uh and a bit kind of uh funny scary interesting news earlier last month there was this um um a world coin uh that that announced itself using uh an optimistic roll-up um called hubble and um so they have this machine that scans your iris and you get free money essentially um there's not much time so i won't go into this right there's a lot of good and bad points to discuss and i think lastly uh we have a news uh pisa dao um bought this it's pretty cool story they bought this uh wu-tang clan uh album that is unreleased uh previously was bought by some uh kind of uh eccentric person uh and then that person went to jail so now the album is the u.s government um and i'm not sure what the uh plans is um if people might know then you guys can share later as well but yeah it's a pretty cool story where nft or blockchain has crossed over into the real world and before without further ado i think i'll just um announce invite my photo to uh to do your thought oh uh mesha okay and where's my slide hold on again and let me shame okay can you see my slide yep okay yeah yeah so may i start yeah go ahead okay okay yeah so thank you very much for inviting to the uh you know east is kl and uh yeah i'm happy to be here um i'm my name is uh actually i before i say my name is i usually said that like you know my name in ethereum world is a same wallet and then my uh same address is 0x5 s3a4222 which no one remember if i don't remember so i do have sort of web 3 uh username called eth and yeah uh i'm hoping majority of people are already familiar with what ens does but uh the kind of fast use case is that you can use for payment address like you know if you open up a metamask you type out of.edh then it shows the same address so important thing is you're not paying money to the name itself you're sending money to the address which the name resolved to and the second thing is people uh i think nick johnson who is a uh kind of founder uh creator in a study he claims that he started that like putting dns name into twitter address then once vitalik started doing then now everybody start kind of following that trend and then you can use it almost like your social identity and this is almost like you know just put in your idh then you already have payment address built into social network and this is more new stuff that uh we i can talk about a bit later but like now we have more integration with uh pfp kind of movement that so that if you set your nfd information into your ens name you can we kind of show that as a your image of uh ens as nfd so another thing important is doing th's name is nft so if you use such matoku.edh in your pc you can actually find my ens and then you can actually you know try to buy from me even though i won't sell and yeah if you really like it this is one of the examples that uh bradley milligan uh our team member went to new york for ny tnf uh nfc oh sorry nfc nyt i always get confused then he just put on the billboard and then like you can see all these people who put like engaged name and say amateur in the huge billboard which made everybody really happy uh including myself like you can see my it's called pasta again i think uh yeah and so today i yeah so this slide is what i gave for the previous one but i briefly explained how it started and in the growth i can talk about probably username aspect and the decentralization is obviously the ends token and so the genesis is that i'm actually based in london i've been here for over 17 years and when i first got into ethereum that was may of june oh yeah sorry june 2016 and one of the i think the second meetup i attended in the serum london i i saw nick johnson presenting about the same name service and so that that's the first time he ever kind of announced or show it to the public was this day back back in 2016 and at that time i think he before he was in google and then before and then when he quit i think he had a very moment he was working a swamp team and this one is i don't know if people are aware but back in the days acm used to be called wall computer like there's no one for like d5 or nfd and the ethereum is on computer and we had other two other concepts called whisper which is a messaging plot system and the swamp is distributed storage which is pretty very similar to ipfs which people store like an ft asset and he uses a fast use case as address space on this one system which now works as well and then we also do some custom integration with ipfs so you can actually do ipfs.io and i think you can put your uh ens name and if your unless name sets so-called content id which is a unique identifier for ipfs or swarm it actually shows that the assets and this was kind of fast use case and we did sorry uh you should launch back in 2017 may and uh always i tell people that i can made that for me that uh may the fourth speed with you though the star force is a way to remember the launch day and back then we had uh we did the launch spread based on the name so if you have certain name you can uh auction immediately but if you have a different name later so we started over three months just to avoid like you know the big like congestion i think this was a fast time uh ecm people started doing ico back from 2016 but 2017 was a time we had a fast very strong bull market where i think back in march uh this price was around ten dollars and at the end august it became 200 so he went 2x a 10x and some like big companies like i think brave did i see a bunker fast decentralized exchange uh automated market making system did that ico so like we we forced uh encounter uh congestion then i was like oh bloody hell this is like five great tank way that's so expensive now like oh 150 great that's cheap right like that's a completely different one but then we had about 180 thousand names auctioned i can't explain what auction means but like then uh yeah we had a huge amount of money uh locked again i will explain but that was over 170 000 is locked on the smart contract which was lost 70 million at that time now it was 750 million and uh one trivia is that because of the fact that it was stuck with auction stagger for over three months and the crypt punks which is one of the so-called fast uh nft was released in the middle of ens launch so and we also call like ens is one of the original nft as well even though it was not the elc 721 until 2019 so some of the name is we call pre-punk and i created this kind of fun uh do that during analytics dashboard so that like it depends on the name uh if you are the ali you can look it up and whether your name was minted even before the pack and that was kind of fun and so that's how it started and so the gross is like as i mentioned it was one the one the craziest launch back then in the fastball market but after that after basically in the three weeks three months of like people just you know getting as much name as possible then we got long periods kind of stuck stuff like that and the part of the reason is so now uh we i think if you have a uns name you know that you pay like five dollars per uh yeah plus crazy amount of gas price but at that time uh it was not like a renewal model it was more like you lock your ease which you bid for the option amount and then you hold the name and if you release the name you get the uh your e-spark so it was almost like a deposit system so this was the way uh so nick johnson when he first launched uh he wasn't quite sure what's the best model so we always he already said like within two years he's gonna upgrade to something else but until then he wants you to have some system so if something goes could be wrong people can just get you know get the money back so that was a system but he had no kind of disincentive for squatters so he was basically you know cultivated by all these name squatters then but we already knew that majority of people weren't really using we could say that there's enos is still a bit complicated that like you have set register and then you have to say something resolver which can you just store the same address to map to now like if you register we do it all in once but at that time it wasn't so until you do the extra step you couldn't even use ens and the 80 name hasn't done the last step so we already knew that majority of only twenty percent of people actually use ens as a you know name system and so we realized that that's not good so after huge discussion we kind of came up with a bit boring system just using uh annual registration fee which we enabled back in 2019 may and yeah so that's time we did a bit of a spike and from 2019 we until that time you couldn't have a short name between three to six characters but this is the time we did the short name option so that's another spike then yeah after we switched we said you have a one year uh kind of trans transition period and after that we're gonna basically expire all the names so from august 2020 all the people who hold hope like hold it in the past uh three years they basically lost the name they just get their deposit back and there's still millions stuck there because even my i have restrained because uh the minimum amount of 0.
01 is which is now probably about the same amount as a gas price so like there's a huge amount if you go to reclaim.exe it actually has exact amount which is still not stuck and the but good thing is after that you can see the registration actually went up continuously which kind of indicates that and there are lots of people who says again i think i saw that peter from guest tweeting that like he had his username taken at the initial launch so he couldn't have that name for very long time so he waited until this gets expired and then after that he just took it so that kind of explains why like you know we have other competitors who says i don't know well rent is bad right like nfd is all about like ownership so rent is but like we actually went through them in the past and we struggled so this is the answer for us so even though it's still not the best i think you have to have some sort of incentive like kind of economics around holding it otherwise people just exhausted all the available name just for the speculative purpose and so yeah we didn't have any anything until really the last two three months yeah from like may onward that yeah people suddenly discovered like you know ens is nfd and also we started promoting a couple of things which is beyond our initial concept so like i i call it three gross engines and the fast is that webster username which was the original title is that yeah so one of the feature is that if you go to your uh address page on the manager you can actually select so-called primary name you use you call reverse record uh once you store it uh you can if you connect it to many of the adapts a decentralized app it recognizes your name and also yeah it's that's why uni swap you can see in the open c then open c opc has its own unique uh username like people pleaser and they probably if she goes to you know foundation or somewhere she might have something different but there as long as they should use the same same address you will do the same thing and yeah this know is a scam and i think this made a huge difference of the of ens as a you know um like username added so he's huge kudos to like he's a scam team and yeah i know we did i think we did a lot of discussion like you know uh about like oh this is working this is not working it's quite it's a bit tricky to display technically but great that you know it's been there and yeah so now that this is an example where people please please adele who was formed to create to bid for the uh art done by people pleaser and you can see that the core member jamies is i think he was showing that you know that in the news uh there's a news of like buying the kind of limited album are you having a news right that guy the the white guy he is actually james and that's actually his email address and transaction and you can see everywhere yeah that's good it's connected to the news so that's great yeah so if i can recap basically that what in the error web 2 each silo had its own unique name but in wave three space as long as they use ethereum address you can have a consistent es name uh but it's not just a cmr actually i won't touch upon later and now we have like over 300 apps supported and the second part is the pfp you already seen that initially that kind of concept kicked off by uh i think that which is a kind of us wallet visualization tool that you can see with usm address you can see what token you hold and they enable that feature to pick the nft but that that information is stored in just their database not shareable so we came up with the standard and using the uh so-called text record text record existed since they start under 2017 about all we did exactly so you can specify basically key and body so you can put twitter as makoto in nowhere and on another page if you put in this kind of special format of like a chain id and ft type 721155 and collection contra address and token id uh basically it has enough information to say uh to fetch the metadata so it shows and also uh you can show that whether that specific token nft is owned by specific user and yeah then i already showed that like you can now see that in uh yeah metadata uh like background image of your dnss and so the important thing is this is uh basically shared across all the cm ecosystems so this is example like a wine integrating with this avatar so it shows the avatar when you you know into one inch and so as uh yeah second one is uh uni swap and the third part is still i think not fully to be taken advantage of but this is i think what takes ens to to the basically the mass market is going beyond.eth and there is three aspect first we we initially said i initially said i could you know eth name is to send east to but like it's actually not that true that like we have over 200 so-called coin types supported and if wallet such as uh the most the one which integrates the most is so-called trust wallet so in case of trust wallet you can actually send uh btc bitcoin to ecm address to brand name i don't have bitcoin but he probably has it so he has his you know btc address and so yeah you can do it for multiple uh chains and also we are making trying to do more integration with l2 so this this is going to be the hot space probably next year and also this is uh this wasn't really new this existed since 2018 of course yeah is that not just.eth but uh you can if you own the internet domain such as like you know argento xyz is a famous uh wallet company uh you can actually have agent or xyz as the us name and the great thing is and we have a ways to proof ownership through that through kind of dns information so that like for ethnic we charge five five dollars a year just to prevent from squatting but because this puts trust into the dns we don't have to charge anything hence this is free the caveat is that gas speed claim is specific expensive i am the first one to do claim that i think dot com i i claim don't brag.com for him and i think i paid like 0.
1 0.4 something like that that's crazy so we we still have an aviation optimization but it's there right and so great thing is like if you have like web 2 companies who who might have their edh name taken they can just have this name as you know with their website as the ens name and they could issue subdomain to users that that kind of usage i think i'm very excited and the last bits is about uh yeah ens uh there's a movement called signing with ethereum it's uh so this for seaweed that i get basically now there's so many companies start talking about interesting recent at you know ethereum like for example twitter is thinking about doing that uh feature to save nfd ready has been talking about a degree with armstrong for ages and i think discord recently showed that you can do this login with uh metamask and the wallet connect for as more web 2 companies start connecting to nfd that's kind of the area that uh now with even web 2 companies show connects to ethereum address then you can use web ens as a kind of close platform identity layer and the logi which the same as one of the way to standardize that movement so like any web 2 company who's who wants to get into m3 this should be able to easily do to web 3 world and yeah last bit isn't the et cetera es this i created about a week ago it's already massively out of date because we already launched but like yeah one of the stuff is why now uh i think nick and bradley had a backlash podcast couple yesterday or a couple days ago he and he was kind of explaining the full detail which you can listen but the gist is that uh we did have always the idea of decentralizing the root at some point because all the names it has a hierarchical level so if you have some domain its parents have power to govern everything underneath and so if eth the apparently gh is a root domain and that's governed by seven mouth six we disable kill the feature to take name away from you so that you cannot do anymore but they can still do something like changing the uh basic registration fee or even kind of renewal fee uh so we this is the first step to decentralize that and also another important thing is yeah when we first started we always have actually double it not that way and they're always nick sounds as like well dao is not really material yet but i think since last year like that space is really really maturing so we have a lot of good tool set and the last bit is that we actually have a lot of revenue and that so important thing is apart from the short name auction which did which we outsource the work to open sea and he never went to our mouth safe so that one we used and that was one of the ways for us to keep develop you know funding our development but apart from that all the registration fee has been smart contract and that's untouched except for one occasion we donated several hundred thousand us dollars to bitcoin apart from that it's a touch that of all these we we always pride ourselves as a kind of public goods for ethereum and beyond so like we want it's not just us we shouldn't we only have like less than 10 people in the team so it shouldn't be us just deciding this huge amount i think there's a debit behind he just added into the uh that like the protocol fee dot me for something and then i'll bring it for last few days it's just usually i think last year around this time we had about like 100 200 names a day and therefore last two to three months we have a i think two thousand names on max and the yesterday it was like eight thousand name on something and the revenue getting ridiculous amount so all these things we need more people to have say on how it should be spent so that's kind of why and yeah and i think we we are not the first boss company you start using that so-called delegation that one the kind of you know decentralized massive governance is that not everybody have time to keep up with all these proposals and votes so we did a so-called delegation system to basically for people to delegate their voting power so that these people can delegate on your behalf on your behalf so this is kind of stock it was uh i think compound but git coin kind of innovative that they kind of mandated at a claim time so and we kind of even excel that we also had a closer so-called constitution and that even before the day people basically have to declare their stance about what we believe but when you join and so and it's all done as a snapshot uh voting which is kind of off-chain voting with very popular mandal apparently like we throated uh basically we did those uh snapshot dot org so like when you had a problem like signing that's because we are basically ddos in their system so i'm so sorry about that but yeah now there is now like i think this is pretty much the oh yeah one of the interesting things yeah who could who who can delegate basically airdrop to over 130k thousand people and yeah this i hope the guy like she is uh a yeah probably youngest could be eight months old baby whose father got parker page. yeah and yeah we we also sent to kinda like over 100 external contributors uh i think it's a scam publicly stated they you receive part of the you know uh contribution and their people says oh it's so generous but when we started we had no idea about the price so like people now support like you surprised that we are freaking out that that like we we saw it's going to be somewhere popular but like we didn't expect that popular so yeah we're kind of freaking out but like we are fine and for the delegation process i don't know if anyone has done with delegation but we kind of eat our dog food so like you not just uh in addition to basically stating your view on the constitution and write down how you want to contribute you also have to put that information as a url into eta gns delegate page along with the kind of tweet and avatar information and yeah these older people i think when last week it was 300 i think a couple days ago when once you started we have 460 or something so probably now like we have maybe over 500 people that been delegated and that if you go to go to tali and i think talia gavin has ens or something now you can see whose kind of top uh voters i think top was like nick brownlee then yeah oh and coinbase i think coinbase is very seriously joining our governor so like i think invest in the top three or something yeah i think that that's about it and from now on like yeah everything is just like so fresh so like if you have any question from this point forward uh i'm happy to uh answer from yeah my probably two three days off like all day history things like it's three days and it's already out of date yeah thank you all right thanks thanks makarov that was that was very uh enlightening on a lot of a lot of things um can i have a quick check with you on your time how much time would you have maybe 10 15 minutes maybe okay okay so um so we'll ask you questions and maybe you can let us know when it's about you have to go then we can do like one or two last questions before we end it um so yeah so if anyone has any questions i think for the sake of timeliness you can just put it in the chat and i can help ask just to make it a bit faster and um i think i already see at least one question but before we get there i always like to ask the first question uh on like can you kind of give us your your back story as to how you join ethereum or blockchain or ens like how did you kind of like go down this rabbit hole in the first place uh so as i show in one of the first slides i got in back in 2016 and then it was march that i used to work as a back-end engineer at the insurance company in london and the one was she well the ceo at that time said uh oh apparently there is something called a distributed ledger that's that's that was a kind of tom used to be used at that time and they said uh it's going apparently it's going to be huge and the uk government wrote a paper about how it's going to change the world so he he just sent out the email uh with the article and he ended but he just said oh that this looks interesting but i have no idea and he finished and that is but i was kind of intrigued so i started reading that then i started going learning about different uh blockchain but it didn't really make sense until it hits ethereum when they talk about smart contract which is programmable money then suddenly like i thought okay yeah if you can write something i actually understand and but in the very beginning uh it was very hard to learn because there's not much information and all the information is after all day so i started writing blog posts about how i just go through the website of the acm.org during going through tutorial uh first person who responded is jeff lao who is now actually the team member of ens as well as kickback so that was quite funny then uh so because i i was kind of frustrated in how that you know it's hard to hold on so i last thing i did is okay i organized a meetup so i started organizing meeting at that time i was organizing actually every other week and i did as a charity purpose that like my company said that we're going to go to sahara desert and i said okay i don't know how to raise up neighborhoods charities so why don't organize meetup people can come drink beer or from the company's fridge but why don't you you know donate five dollars so that's how i wasted meet up but at the same time there's some ethereum maxes they refuse to use credit card to give charities so they give me halfway east and i use my credit card that's how that and then nick came i think in august i think into my meetup and he started talking about enns so that's how i kind of knew about uh yeah nick and then he launched in 2017 i was kind of vaguely involved by going to like their his annual workshop.com stuff but like i also had this during that meetup i had project called kickback where like most people just sign up and don't come so we just uh i create a simple staking contract that like if you say you come you stake that first time i created without one is and if you don't come we slash it and then we share with the people who came so uh yeah like first time i did it everybody came in 2016.
second time i did the east ecc paris 2017 uh seven people signed up and the four people came so we share like 0.3 east or something that was very good yeah so that's kind of how i got it nice yeah i wish we had more time to go into kickback but i think we'll try and focus on yeah yes yes so uh okay uh 90210.e um asks um for avatars uh can we use nfts from other evm chains as our avatar image yeah so protocol itself has uh ei chain id in one of the specifications so i think it's says eoi p155 slash one so if you put other chain id uh it technically should resolve but our metadata data service apparently not looking up on easter scan actually the uh polygon so or other chains so like it's not showing but technically and specification wise it is possible it's just like our back-end metadata generation service is not supporting so if you want to set that in a delegation page probably it won't display yeah but you still recognize that you you did you you you are the delegate but it just doesn't it probably doesn't show up properly um then julie uh asks uh what learning resource would you recommend for those who are curious about how the inner workings of ens uh so i think we have a newsletter so if you go to ens dot domains and if you scroll down it says join newsletter so if you put that in uh you can uh you can get up today uh best way is also disco now is a not good time because everybody's just talking about talk and talking tokens so maybe if you wait for maybe two three weeks and then once it settles uh there's a channel so you can ask questions and that one way to lie is just to see create some app and see learn how you can integrate with cns uh we have a and it's not domains and there's a couple of easy ways to do the integration so and also some libraries like esa.js play natively with cns so integrating your adapt into ens is a fast step then probably that gives you more understanding about what ens is and how it works out of these all right chiranjit asks um will future ens buyers emerge ens name bias will they be rewarded with ens tokens and what would be the mechanics for that uh we as a team i think we only plan for the initial token distribution anything more than that is going to be on dollar a lot so if some dao delegates decides to propose that that may happen but we are currently not planning it to add anything extra okay cool um satya asks um uh they bought i think it's a very good question so they bought an anus name with their main address but now they don't want to be doxxed so what would be like some advice on how to deal with that us so if you set ian's name and if you say a primary address you'll be sure all your transform is shown is a scan right you can unset that uh so that yeah i think there's a beam button in the address page to set primary name so you can answer primary name and also if you you on set a record page so if you go to our update name and your username and it shows registrar controller and resolver and acm address if you are set that if you type ens name on metamask it doesn't show result to your address itself however everything like blockchain is kind of immutable so the fact that you register at some point is not possible to change so that history is is you can't change i don't think there's no way around that so that the nice important thing is it quite often yeah uh we recommend people to use es name as your profile but we don't recommend using the same one to store your lots of stash don't probably better not to put punks or anything like that you should separate to somebody same address and then if you want to have enos name feel free to do it i actually have a couple of names which just for the private purpose but make sure just don't send fund from your public ens name because you also people see the trace of where the money comes from so in that case if you really want to be thorough you have to send the east from like something like tornado like you could use with centralized exchange uh there's one interesting development that there's a company called sysmo and they are looking for some gk solution to basically sh a test that you own punk without showing what address it is so that could be interesting development that now yeah so that that like you could like it's something like avatar system one of the problem is like probably not many people all the delegate they don't have punks because punks is just too dangerous to put into your public you see him address so we i saw a couple apes maybe penguins but i don't see it but in future probably we should be able to show that this address has some coin which proof that does this person have punk or something that's more future yeah okay um thanks the next question um is it technically possible for parachains or cross chain bridges for example uh polka dot to interact with ens or at the very least give users options to link ens to a parachute address i think you answered this a little bit earlier yeah so one of the stuff is uh basically just we have a main in the main change there with a multi-coin address so you just put that but like that means that you store in mainnet about their coin information there's ways to actually store in l2 but that's mostly uh related to roll-ups where yeah it gets very complicated but for some layer two we we have some plan to work on but probably it's it's a bit too complicated to explain that okay and um so 90210 asks okay another question what are the advantages of ens when compared to unstoppable domains or other name services uh yeah so the biggest advantage is it has a the most integration so it's actually the thing pretty much only thing people use in terms naming service we have at least dozens of whatever name service i've never seen and other people using it doesn't yeah unstoppable is one the one which also resides on ens uh sorry ethereum name system if i think they have some plan for i'm not unstoppable so i can't really say much but i think they they do great thing about importing new user by allowing people to buy in credit card but i tried to see my wallet and they cost 10 grand even though it's like one purchase in their own only but like i don't want to spend 10 grand you know three characters 30 grand or something 300 crazy yeah so if you want to spend that much money and by by all means uh and also i think currently they do custodian way which is okay but to make it usable you have to pay chain on chain fee so i think majority more than half of the name doesn't actually exist on one chain currently so i think you can't see that but now they have a plan for polygons so i'm interested to see how they do but yeah the biggest yeah biggest advantage is just a network effect that like everybody using these are the things like you know why people don't switch from twitter or facebook despite like you know so many things it's a network effect once it gets something like d5 tools it's all about liquidity so there's lots of competitors people get helpful on and off this user identity once people using it it's a your own identity so it becomes extremely difficult to switch and now we are we are the front you know like forefront of this identity space so as long as we can maintain the good uh kind of gap between others i i personally feel like yeah there's no reason to use others but it's good to have competition to be honest yeah um um would it be correct to say also that uh like ens has uh like tld support like top level domain support uh whereas uh i don't think the other ones have you know like uh got a proper gns so that's a good question like many other competitors tend to create their own domain space and i mean to be honest dot eth is our own domain space as well but some difference is like you do at least need one domain space to start with so we needed an eth and also eth is a result country reserve code to ethiopia and ethiopia has a dot tl so people could future buy random three-letter characters like dot pol or whatever but they can't buy dot eth easily having said that we are planning to move yeah we we want to get that you know ets domain in future but like yeah and also yeah as you said like you know like dot x y z um so yeah many people if you have domain name you can do and there are interesting things that i think if uh internet domain registrar are interested in the web3 world they can have ownership of their top level domain and they get tied into ens the one example is a data domain don't credit and i think the art does a certain degree that don't credit it actually they they link their internet domain information to i think ipfs and put the hash into ens so that don't create internet domain it automatically becomes ens slash nft so you can actually list internet domain into openc and you can transfer this basically it was very innovative way and starting back in 2019 i i would like to see some heavy he does actually get internet top-level domain and do something like that that would be super exciting okay cool um so i think if you have time you can go like maybe two more questions okay um okay then uh cedric asks uh does ens aim to solve existing problems in dns in web 2 for example for the domains domain hijacking and will the fees of ens domain be lower or more accessible to the common person in the future similar to traditional dns domains uh i think eas domain fee itself is quite affordable that five dollars a year what's not affordable is a gas feed register there is one interesting proposal came from rich rickman who is also he said that he was saying maybe we could if you spend like you know 100 on the gas fee that's almost equivalent to like 20 years loss maybe we could just sub extend the uh duration as part of the kind of gastric which kind of hearts long-term revenue but at the same time it makes it more affordable i actually reply to those messages that if you do that it might be better to increase the fee from five not five because if you let people to have 20 years that kind of defeats the purpose of having that annual fee anyway so i don't really think it's good to encourage people to have longer so maybe we could either max to five five year or just increase the base fee so that if you pay for two hundred dollars that's me for five to ten years that could be interesting solution and uh rather than uh domain hijacking i mean it kind of your key is your identity right like if you don't wanna get hijacked there's not much we can do to be honest uh but you could have that as a you know multisim and let multiple to hold it so it is by being the kind of first-class citizen of ethereum you could use the power of smart contract to do that i think as opposed to just using a traditional one domain hijacking yeah i think okay so i think um i'll just ask one last question unless someone wants to chip in very quickly um i'm very curious to kind of understand the if you are able to share right now like the story of how dns team uh like started to work on the dow plans like how you kind of uh got advisors and like and and designed the the structure of the of the dao yeah are you able to share a certain degree though i think yeah i think there's a some of the enes member kind of started bringing the idea of like should we do some sort of this dow idea like every now and then and then some other member kept like shooting off but one thing one encouraging thing was that uh bitcoin did the fantastic uh token sale token launch which kind of encouraged uh that oh that's actually you know that was one of the first non-d5 project did very kind of almost like fair not fairlance because they have been investing but like you know they did so that was actually this i don't know whether we had a talk before lunch or after lunch i i don't remember uh that was one of the big inspiration and also i think it's also public that uh there's a company organization called fire eyes which includes uh james wolfe and also people and the guy from bankless and they could buy i i knew cooper before he became big but yeah and he he's basically he kind of said every double needs to cooperate like you know he did like super rare and then yeah like i think he did obviously everything everything and then i think we had a lot i wasn't directly involved without conversation but i think we had a constant conversation with the team about how to how to give talking to the uh right hands is most important thing right like and i think one of the good idea or like you know uh give more not to the number of names people own but that you total duration i think that was the idea uh suggested by fire eyes as well i think yeah cool um i think i'll just sneak in one very last question before you let you go and it's just a very i guess uh not so serious one uh but i think a lot of people will be curious to know um like are there any uh possibilities or plans to kind of pass the revenues to token holders or is that something that's just for the delegates to decide so i think uh it was in uh so constitution has four sections and i think section three he says don't just give it to us that's partly because i think there's a find this discussion about the security debate as well right like uh because so we are less i'm not that the legal expert so you know you have to it's not the legal advice but one of the stuff like it kind of hury test is like you know do you sell token one do you give dividends without any labor these two are the two points to make a security right and we we can't if you don't give to dividends and if you don't give it to uh sorry if you don't sell so we didn't uh provide any liquidity on the uh you know uh the exchange we purely get these two lower the you know how to say kind of get out if you start arguing about is ens style security the fact that we don't do these two will eliminate the risk a lot if dao wins to enable for the dividends this becomes i think it becomes dao's existential problem so i think that one each member should think about the consequence before they say yeah i just want it you know and that but like it's more important but however if it's to be given to the people who doesn't work through the delegation or the work proposal that should be fine and yeah but that's it yeah i mean i i just thought that uh that would be very interesting for a lot of people here to hear um yeah so uh thanks a lot mukuro for sharing with us your time i think it's also just nice it's one hour so we can let you go and um yeah if you ever come to malaysia uh you know please let us know and we'll be happy to have a proper in-person uh meet up with you all right thank you very much all right thanks bye all right um so if people are interested to stay on uh just to chat um we can stay here or go to gather town um i think if there's a lot of people who want to have different conversations we can go together town i think otherwise
