Speaker
Makoto Inoue returns to tell us about the latest big update to Ethereum Name Service. The video is from the April 2019 #ethldn meetup at Imperial College London - https://www.meetup.com/ethereum/. The Ethereum Name Service #ENS - https://ens.domains - transforms a human readable domain name into an ethereum address. No longer does your friend have to use some gobbledy-goop address, now they can use a .eth address (eg. yourname.eth). okay so today's agenda who does not know one two three four five six okay six like seven yeah but 10% of people so I'll do the very quickly introduction why ENS it does and also who has ENS name okay okay probably about the same number or a bit less okay and yeah so for these people who has a name you have to do something so bad let's go home like I'll explain what that is and they'll explain how you do it as well but before that yeah so international in DNS and it's a prehistory is that so yes my name is there X 5 a 3 a 4 to 7 SB 6 5 FA 0 9 3 Dec and then other stuff is my basically same address but obviously I wouldn't remember but what I would remember instead these my Anna's name is a motto condo is right so like it it's on my t-shirts printed here and I have a I think business card which does actually says motto condo each as well somewhere so if you you know like someone wants to send me is I don't think anyone has ever sent me actually is just because they're in this presentation but you know just in case you know where it is send it's good so basically just to provide the name just like internet like in a rather than typing IP address you used with a type like domain name that doesn't give anything and how does anyone use something like a metal mask there most people knows yeah so usually you copy and paste the address there but like you can type like a motto kundo each and they quickly convert into same address that's that's exactly how it works it's very easy and as you can see it's it all depends on wherever you interact with so all the tools and the ecosystem to support like if people don't actually implement it you can use it because meta muskie integrated with us right so like if you think about other stuff so there's a lot of wallets for example or Arjun is an argent I think they they're the last speed a small speaker the new bra what it also supports ENS so I was like I'm talking cypher less status and yeah meta mask mist is now deprecated so we should get rid of it yeah my crypto my ISA wallet has anyone used any like some okay good good so you should know how to use it basically yes yeah same the pull request the updated web page and so when I first heard about the see anything I saw it's some special software then it turned out it's just another small country does anyone know smoking truck yeah okay good good yeah so it's just another small contract it's built with and it's actually the collection of smoke mantra that what you in trapped so it's kind of chicken and egg situation but to use name you actually have to know the address of ENS and so y NS itself has the same address and that's where it's actually the small contribution called registry which contains all the information about basically the names and these names but it doesn't actually contain its associated addresses that's actually into something called resolvers so like a fast when you look up I want to know the same address of a motto Condor is first you ask to the registry that which actually rather than returns this internally like in the UI you just get that you say magistrate but like a internally the actually return this resolver address and you ask the resolver what it is then it returns back so it's it's two steps and I'll probably explain why you need it in the next slide hopefully and this is one the example so manager door ans domains it's one day up I'm also working on is basically it brings you I to the to instructor we say Sam smart contra yes then where you can find is that is this does this workers there's a button so I thought it does yeah well so here you can see that yeah owner is directs without my address then there's a place to set the resolver and it once you set the resolver then you can selectively set the address and you can put and save that's kind of you I and that if you look it's actually not just the same address you can set also does anyone know like something called like ipfs okay who doesn't know IPSS get one two three four yeah so IP again there's another one costs one so their IP f s is why is it yeah so it's like a basically for mostly like smart contra you don't actually put them it put on the smart conjure you usually put some sort of like a logic program in computing logic not less i compute in logic but logic to decide who gets what that kind of stuff but you don't use an SOP like a music or like big files and this stuff that's like too much to put in a blockchain rather there's another system called that ipfs or days in the course one which what it guarantees is that it has a unique URL dedicated to that content and it's after that cache of the content becomes a URL so that you kind of guarantee that this content if you're going to the same address it guarantee that contents has never changed because most of the website it doesn't necessarily guarantee and they like them they also have the same issue that they have a comedy boon number so we can actually help them by setting their content hash and again this kind of IP Hastings if you come easy resolve it it's useless but now like for example if you have a metal mask extension you can actually go to something somewhere Center is and if that is has the content set you can see that side and the saw was the latest edition is opera opera is a browser they announced their support on these ipfs stuff so you can do that as well okay so that so far explained what registry and what read resolve us and but if you look at the first page I there's also another country for registrar and this is a kind of main topic of today it's like a registrar as name suggests allows you to register name but there's a lot of again like you can cast oil another reason why we solver has a multiple is that okay it kind of loose you to kind of swap out the logic for example this previous one content before it didn't have the right format to distinguish but by various protocol so people are just putting whatever stuff but we we came up with a new protocol to call content house so as part of it we have to upgrade if and as you know like smart contra immutable things so it's very difficult to kind of grace makanga but by detaching this registry really which is a main main interaction point to interact with Thatcher the logic to him to resolve if you can kind of switch and is pluggable it makes you a lot easier to upgrade so that's part of the reason to do make resolver yeah the reason we have resolver and similar token that like so if you are the owner of the certain domain then usually you can set out the you can change the ownership or you can change that and easier you can create another subdomains just and but doing all that manually is quite time-consuming so you can also delegate that acts to smart contra and one thing cohosh registrar is the smart control which is in charge of basically who can have the name and the door eth domain so like in this my token door is when we first launched that's the only top-level domain you have name under and if you look at the can you guys kinda see fish like on the top it says about 270,000 names are owned and adore is so that's pretty much roughly the whole names exists and that ETH address but there's another thing called that anyone nonsensical reverse registra reverse register what we must record actually so like a ENS you have to know my NS name to find our address but you can actually also do the reverse of knowing my same address for example if I am a top developer and if people sign in using meta masks or something I already know you a same address item look up your my same name reversely so that logic is actually exist which not many people knows but it's actually bases like we actually have another logic to basically have rebus reiationship public address as a key and name of the value so that's the second one so like all the 300,000 people who registered kind of names only two so less than 2,000 people actually have this repo but that's what it represents and also it's not just ETH address but you can also actually integrate if you have the ownership of a DNS domain name who has a website okay good yeah and if you have website and you know you have a control over your DNS record does anyone know in tears who doesn't yeah yeah and you can put the biscuit text record in someone's subdomain and if you put you a same address there's some magical ways which let anyone to prove that relationship in the DNS to submit into small concha the privilege you actually own that domain then by that information for example I have a motto kundo X Y the estimate that I can have is a unis name and that XYZ and it that also happens for the number five dot Lux has about 500 and dot XY Z actually 48 it's actually technically quite complex so there's only 48 people who study so far now these things like it each of them have its own unique logic for example this hash yeah so we must register and also yeah another thing is all the other things so do you know what they represent this number and you can guess so that for example state up a store East in a few owns that same address good and dick coin if yes yeah yes so and what they do is once we own the domain you can also issue a subdomain so what they are doing is like they are issuing the subdomain to users so these are the kind of shows like you how many people so like you know I actually do have my photo tokiko East because I registered their service that comes tough and I will explain later but like a getting this this mac emoticon door is was very typical thing before so by tap helping issuing subdomain for their user was a kind of good ways to market because now people says okay send money to my photo don't get caught yes it's almost like it you know Gmail or hotmail kind of stuff and these are the graph but again these each logic has difference you need a smoke different smoke on track so that's the Registrar so far okay yes and yeah so let's dive into hash register a bit more that who has done this auction before one two three yeah so it's actually dump yeah so like I just brought the world ocean just now but so what happens like a it's managed by smart culture and what you do is like you basically said I want this name I want my talking dog eath and I'll buy it so I'll just put the money into small contra and the 1d kind of obvious thing but people might not know is like for example you know everybody said yeah everybody you can use anything for poor chaining and the people try to do so many things but if you try to kind of do with private information 1/2 what you have to be very in mind like all the data is in public so if you want to do a kind of private auction or something if you just put the money and as soon as you put money and the information goes to the blockchain anyone can know how much you put so people can outbid and other stuff so to prevent that we often use pattern called commit commit and reveal model that when you first put the price you kind of hide it for certain time period which was three days I think they're after that you disallow anyone stick to a new price then you reveal to kind of prevent a cheat so that's kind of pattern to do some sort like private kind of voting or like ocean in the blockchain but that's why you exercise it's very inconvenient and when we first did it we put the five days so like three days commit phase followed by two days with your face then you have to do finalize as well so it's you actually have to send three transactions which again a very inconvenient but at the same time this is an auction but it's deposit and so that what the money will be locked in a small contra so as long as you want to use a name it's being stuck but if you say I don't need it anymore you basically kind of get the money back and last thing is a does anyone know anything about Vickrey auction yeah who doesn't know big reaction okay all these people so Vickrey auction is a it's also called second second I think Wiener auction or something that basically if you put everybody put the bits the hot a person who bid the highest bit wins but they pay the price of a second winner which supposed to be the kind of kind of game theory mechanism to incentivize people to kind of bit on this price or something and when we first did the auction but I think there will be data am i explain later is that the highest be amount was about two hundred thousand yes I don't know how much that was I remember two years ago yeah but actually the highest amount people actually had to look was about like 10 times lower like twenty thousand or something so that's kind of harsh register and yeah because I mentioned that I'll go through the beer history so this is the first time that there's an en esta creature of lockdown who has been to all four talks except me I didn't talk all four like fast he was I think the first time I went to is there meetup was like back in 2016 it is a March or April I think that time that there's a fast talk when swamp guys would gave a talk Nick talked about yen as a part of the that was a fast time and after that Nick gave a talk winters and 70 I gave a talk on 2018 and now I give a talk 2019 so it's been one that kind of oldest project in the serum space that but it's awfully kind of launched as a project in the November and the launched in 2007 team may force and I joined the stream just about Jaeger and yeah and before it was a kind of side project of the guy called Nick Johnson who used to work at I think gas tea but like he he was doing it on the side and also he's also known as one of the EIP editor does anyone know any IP yeah who doesn't know I think I should just ask like who doesn't know any IP okay yes so he ipcc me improvement protocol so like every time like people wants to improve the protocol very Syrian people do I propose it's it's just really hot rap oh and that governance is a kind of always like if you look you know Twitter there's a people sending governance this come on stuff but like Nick is one of the pastor who's editing I think almost like two years so he's kind of pretty much well-known yeah and he was kind of doing all by himself but like a about yeah I go we got the grants from his young foundation for about 1 million dollars and that's the time when we form a new company so people still think oh are you are you actually saying foundation but it actually technically it's not like we have a company in Singapore or two names limited its nonprofit and yeah then now we are here okay and interesting thing is this data so another interesting thing is like a there's a ten minutes left I'm gonna speed up a bit as the older you know blockchain or the things is in public so anyone can take into the day say so that this kind option is was I think when we first launched he was taking up like one fourth of the entire same traffic or something and it was a time when like I co proved just about to stop so he was 2017 May then from April to August of all the time when either price like Sarge from $10 to the $200 or something so like and during that time everybody's doing I say madness this was also happening so you can kind of see that in the phone and also like when we first launched that's when lung-lung grab happens right so like that's fast three months there's a lot of activities we did some things to kind of at that time like everybody tried to do one of the problem and I co hit in the traffic a lot is it because he was a kind of fast campus office okay and it's in a limited time window people try to rush we have some mechanism to kind of spread the based on the kind of I think hashed length of the name or something we split across three months so even though there's an auction well probably almost like two hundred thousand names that was spread around three months but during that time the dots of activities and yeah currently about 170,000 each lock which is about sake median I think USD and the key figure which leads to why we do in the new permanent registrar is so all the 270,000 owned does anyone remember what resolved is who doesn't who doesn't remember resolver okay so everybody dish but key takeaway is to use the ENS you have to set resolver okay resolver has a logic to serve you what address is forgiven ENS name yep over the 270,000 owned only 15,000 cells a resolver that means like yeah 82% of people hundred percent even though if you put the name there is no guarantee that people actually giving you away like in a showing like I do all the time right but like a setting the resolver is one of the easiest matrix to track whether people are actually trying it and that also there's another about 40,000 people didn't even finalized so they just revealed and they show that so like found out they warm and they just they were happy and they just left out that yes right so like about 80 percent more than 80 percent people are not really using and then who thought so okay raise your hand if you have ENS name and okay what's the best way who are squatters okay so yeah basically you got some how many do you have one and you didn't sell yeah so people who haven't said the resolver yeah you have have you said okay see you squatter okay yes so it's a accident of squatter thank you yeah well I indicated squatter whyever stuff but so now we're going to go to this pub so called haven't registered that the reason we call problem registrar is like when Nick did the deployment two years ago he is fully aware that he didn't know every single use case and what's good what's bad so he was going to change to more permanent one which I think we have this current registrar actually have a four years time span and after four years he is just like papers or whatever have happened so we we knew we have to change it and so two years may divorce is like two years anniversary since the launch we're gonna move migrated this new so-called registrar which I put a comparison that instead of doing the auction it's going to be fast in past in the past and Adam yeah so basically yeah past campus office and with fixed amount and in still doing three transaction the five days you still have to do register reveal why do you know anyone can explain No so you mind I can still front run so that like because you know you said like everything in public right even though now you're not yeah sorry I got too excited well only technical bit I'm talking today yeah yeah I just press this by mistake so is that when you send a transaction before it gets committed my now why why if he's just trying arsenic's too long you can see go ahead just snatch it so that initially we we set a time window that like a until yeah so like we had put a time I intentional time interval that like a once you do register you have to wait one minute or something like that then you do the reveal but if we saw that if if we have the weight material like for example 10 mil 10 minutes as long as a second reveal doesn't exceed 10 minutes no one can go in front of you usually it was supposed to be 15 minutes but yesterday we I just learned like we just wanna change one minute because that's a pain that you have to wait for 15 minutes and they're our biggest discussions what we should put while people waiting for one minute and Nick was saying yeah we should put some funny YouTube video or something but that's the biggest UX challenge we have trying to solve right now and yeah so and another thing is the part of the reason why people don't care much is like it because there is no cost involved right because that money you put in the auction was just such as a deposit so for squatting there's no cost so one way to change is just to spend so that we're gonna change the fee and at the same time nice yeah we're gonna charge we're gonna go to the next one yeah so pricing so this one we had a lot of discussion like we we had a to workshop for last two years come up with what's the best ways to decide the pricing and how in that kind of stuff but we didn't really come up with convincing way so we basically decided to say something very similar to conventional basically domain name registrar they charge like X amount and usually most of domains are ten dollars so initially we said like ten dollars but when we first post in a disc forum there people kind of gained started well it should be cheaper so I think someone suggested one dollar and we just discussed and they we settle with five dollars but important thing is we use fear and mount or actually you spend in East but we have some do you know does anyone know Oracle yeah okay so or a cool make it who knows make it out yeah so make it our is a stable point right one way was tea sir stable ish yeah stable-ish token so we don't use stable coin but we use the Oracle data they use so that we can get for example it could be if you do it today it's going to be I don't know what's the price of the okay so that amount equivalent of eath but if we it goes to the moon next month then we adjust use an Oracle but the actual amount you spend is yes okay okay 42 second and yeah and that we also said like a probably it's if it's shorter it's it's more value so it's gonna be more expensive and the use of the fund is still up in the air that in the short time we put in a in a small sick and the probably gonna use for some for like development funding of the ENS itself or but like people think like we might get lots of money but if you think about it only the people even people who set the razorba which is fifty thousand if entire people transitions and start paying the Registrar it's only I think two hundred two hundred fifty thousand or something so it's not a humongous amount you have to bear in mind and this is the UI it looks like so you can put one yeah two good things you have to know is like you can say as many as long as you like so you can say hundred time yes now and then you just forget about it and also you can renew anyone can bring you so if you want to take this to me as a kind of public goods and even if the part of who owns it disease people can topping up and all just gonna skip short neighbors who could die early but like I'll put this slide on that somewhere and so you can have a look but important thing is made of force yeah so this is only 2 minutes so may the force is an important thing that's when family register start and I think in the 30 days after shortname reservation process start with this what if you want to know what that means I don't have time to explain but yeah and it yeah migration program oh and if you have the name you have to migrate within one year from the middle force otherwise you will lose the name but you can still get the money until yeah as long as you like yeah back ok so most important thing is in this space that yeah you have a lots of it for you we just did the AMA so like a most of a question you have probably can find it and the only thing you have to remember is this may the force that's where all the permanent register starts ok you
