[Music] hello hello can you hear me yes it's okay so sorry I was in the plane like four hours ago so I didn't sleep tonight so perfect um and as you can hear I am I have a very little French accent so it will be perfect so open source so from public good to professional success so so I'm Greg the fer of only Dust We are a coordination platform so basically if you're an open source contributor if you want to contribute to open source you can come on only dust and it's working very very well um I explain how it works and what we have learned um about that so first thing I think public goods and open source contribution are the two phases of phases of the same coin so it's very related if something is open source it's better uh as a public good and this topic is a public that open source it's uh it's always a good sign and it's very clear that open source brings value to the world like if something is open source everyone can use it and you can audit the code you can check this and if and it's what we love with blockchain it's by default everything is open source so the problem is okay something is open source it it can be a it's a public good it's helping but as a contributor what about yourself you are contributing to this project what value for you there is a value for the community what is the value for you and I think it's the problem right now if you are contributing to open source there is no alignment like you are contributing for one two three four months but at the end you have nothing in return or have something that is very very hypothetical and so what try to solve it's like creating this M or if you are contributing to open source you have a clear path something that can help you and for me it's a secret of sustainability so we are talking with a lot of devs and we are asking them what for you is the most rewarding when you contribute to open source and it's in this order first thing it's for them it's take over take challenges for like okay I contribute to open source because I love to take over challenges take challenges so it's a great uh a great signal if you are like an open source maintainer and you have a a repo and you have to have open source contributors try to create this like Tech interest they want to meet amazing peers the second thing so people are like I want to meet people by contributing it's very important I want to make maybe a mentor maybe someone who can help me maybe someone who who will um uh learn me things third they want to learn new skills so it can be a new language but uh it it also be something a bit different a new way to code a new way to coordinate with over people and at the end boost your reputation a lot of them are like I am contributing to B because it boosts my reputation it's why I'm doing that and if you try to grow move forward that's not all ADV end if you ask them okay okay it's great to have these four things but at the end what do you want very clear 10% of them they want to launch an open source project 60% of them they want to find a job it's why they are contributing to open source it's why we have so many uh trainees uh people um who are studying computer science and this kind of stuff and junior level contributors and about 30% want to build their company and they're like I don't know exactly what I want to build but I know that if I am contributing to open source I will find an ID and I will find the co-founder and it's why we are contributing to open source but we have two big issues with that first if you want for example to find a job or anyway you have to Market yourself and today a lot of devs are just contributing and they're just waiting for an opportunity to come they don't Market themselves and some are not contributing a lot but they are tweeting every day about what they are doing but in fact it's not a very useful job they are not very skill skilled but at the end they they Rec they um they can have all opportunities available so for us it's a problem and what we are trying to do right now and it's working pretty well we are creating like this it's like your profile as a as an open source contributor so it's very easy for someone from a foundation for a recruiter anyway so and far more complete than GitHub to see okay this guy is great at these languages is contributing at this this and this project he has earned so many rewards by contributing so has bring value to the ecosystem a lot of things like that and we have people from the community who who will like contact you and be like oh you are top 10% you have learned this language I can help you to have the job I can send you to this aaton I can help you to apply to this grant so it's a community Le program and it's working very well and we have a lot of people who are finding opportunities because if you just contribute you will learn a lot of things but at the end no one will notice and with this system if you are contributing someone will notice because the system is built for that and so we are doing this very efficiently and right now we have between 30 and 40 people each month open source contributor who are not tweeting at all we are not talking about their job but are finding job creating creating open source project are creating companies just by contributing not by tweeting another thing in the open source and I think it's the problem in public good in general there is a huge momentum problem why it's very simple you are someone who is working part time as an open source contributor because you are working for free or for small grants and you have someone in front of you with a maintainer and maybe it's parttime too so you will be like oh I want to contribute Monday morning and it will be available Wednesday afternoon so it will answer to you two days after and you will be in school or you so we answer the Sunday and at the end nothing happens so what we're trying to do in open source and publico in general right now it's to create like open source week or each oh it's better each uh each month we organize an open source week or at the same hour Monday morning every maintainer every open source contributor is in front of their computer and they can be like oh I want to contribute or I want help and people can meet on on leers and last time we had like 400 developers 30 UT Source projects and it was working very well in just few hours A lot of people are just they F their project uh they found the contribution they want to make and it's very very effective so two things about our problem as I said first if you contribute no one will notice and you can fix that by creating this kind of public profile and by aning Empower member of your community to give them like uh opportunities and second there's a problem of momentum or you are part time and you g part time there is a great chance that you don't like meat at the right moment and you can fix that by just creating this momentum okay guys let's meet this thur day at 10:00 a.m. all together on the application and it works for example just some example of our community I have like 30 testimon like like this every month oh first that never mind just so except this new chapter just she is someone from she was like uh working like on only Des from the start and now she she's has a full-time job and she wasn't tweeting every day just because she was doing an amazing job um by this she's from Costa Rica and he was like oh no I have like like a new open source project and he was funding a lot of Open Source contribution Dury this week solving this momentum problem or Ben was like oh I have I have I was contributing to only and now uh now he is a freelancer because someone noticed and so we are organizing a community me Comm Community Meetup so if you are an open source contributor someone we like oh I want to contribute to open source to find a great job create an amazing company or just create create my own open source project come and uh if you're maintainer with like I need more interesting contributor I need more people who are eager to create value for the project and value for himself just come and say I and we will accept you and uh we'll have like more more than 100 developer of our community from all around the world so it will be a a great moment to catch up thank you guys [Applause] [Music]
