Banks are getting replaced by stable coins, and your smart fridge might start managing your finances because, let's be honest, it's probably more disciplined than you. I'm Lauren Mixson, and you're watching The Boston Blockchain Beat. Stablecoins are no longer a crypto product. They're becoming the back end of global finance. For years, people thought stablecoins were just for trading, but that's just not what's happening anymore.
As you can see provided on this chart by CoinDesk, so on-chain transaction volume using stablecoins has surged by 74% as of December in 2025. So, companies are now using USDC and other stablecoins to send payments, move money across borders, and settle transactions faster than traditional banks. We're talking minutes instead of days. Even institutions like the International Monetary Fund and Bank for International Settlements are studying how stablecoins can improve global payments, and companies like Circle are building the infrastructure to make it happen. Here's the shift.
Stablecoins aren't competing with crypto anymore. They're competing with banks. All right, let's talk about AI and crypto. AI is about to start spending money, and it can't even use a bank account. As AI becomes more advanced, it's no longer starting to ask questions, and it's just starting to act.
We're entering a world where AI agents can run businesses, execute tasks, and even make financial decisions. But, here's the problem. AI can't open bank accounts. It can't pass KYC. It can't log into your Chase or Wells Fargo account, but it can use a crypto wallet.
That's why companies like Coinbase and firms like a16z are pushing the idea of agentic commerce, where AI doesn't just think, it transacts. And this is where blockchain becomes critical because for the first time, money can be programmable, autonomous, and global by default. AI needs blockchain technology. It needs crypto, and that's going to change everything. So, let's put all this together.
Stablecoins are becoming payment rails, AI needing crypto to operate. As you can see, crypto isn't just an industry anymore. It's becoming the foundation for how money moves in the future. And honestly, like we are stepping out of the crypto wild west, and it's pretty cool. Most people realize this shift after it's already happened.
Or, you can see it happening in real time at Boston Blockchain Week, which is happening this September, 8th through the 10th in Kilroy Square in Quincy, Massachusetts.
