Michael Thuy: Swarm City & Fair Data Society | Swarm Orange Summit Madrid 2019

Swarm City & Fair Data Society - Building Decentralized Rideshare Michael Thuy (@kingflurkel) & Gregor Žavcer In order to create truly decentralized, peer-to-peer ridesharing, we must have decentralized data persistence and messaging. Swarm City is currently using IPFS and Whisper respectively, but neither is robust or reliable enough to accomplish the goal. To circumvent this, Swarm City created an API bridge, but this adds centralization to the ecosystem, which is unacceptable in the long term. With Swarm we hope to realize our long-held dream of decentralized rideshare. In doing so we can together solve not only the data persistence and messaging problems, but also scaling, and anonymity. https://press.swarm.city/swarm-city-swarm-united-by-fair-data-society-to-build-decentralized-rideshare-fa1c1c656a37 About Michael (@kingflurkel) Swarm.city co-founder / architect, dreaming of decentralized uncensored commerce for the world. hello good afternoon thank you for the opportunity first farm city to be here a little bit this afternoon I want to talk about swarm city and what we are about to do with data fund and fare drive for data Society and swarm so for those who have you who done those from city I'll just go over it so we started as Arcade City years ago he responds to numerous blockings of ubers and lyft's throughout the US we raised $800,000 in 2016 with an ICU with the promise of peer-to-peer unstoppable designs release ride-sharing back then people called it the etherium Zuber killer back then but then the development started and I was like truly a wake-up call that lasted for like two years I would say the wake-up call and then something really interesting happened to our project we we were struck by this feature by parities multi-sig wallets where you could actually steal all the money and so we lost all our funding back then that was 44k either our remaining funds we spent last year on what we call the boardwalk release which is like a very first iteration of what we think can be done and we also set up a swarm city association which is a non-profit association in Switzerland to get some legal protections so why this is like the most important question I think so drivers who use uber lose up to 30 percent and they have no power or influence whatsoever over price setting are the economics of their network the state is trying all the time apparently to block uber lyft sometimes in favor mostly in Europe in favor of existing taxi companies and the users have of course zero privacy and it's 100% data slavery why because freedom of movement movement is a human right and we think that in moving from one place to another you experience emotionality which is like the perfect time to jam in our ideas about decentralization so we looked at what do we need to build a decentralized unstoppable in central marketplaces a brand a belief system community that was the easy part we already had like a lot of people who are you know like frustrated by existing systems and they quickly gathered around our brand and and an idea you need identity a reputation you need of course a value to value token which is all you know we did all that and then you need messaging and we were working and working and working to get whisper going for that and then we realized and so like this is never gonna happen same thing with ipfs we of course need data storage and same thing we kept working on it and it's not gonna happen this is how far we got we made our first release which is basically more like a Craigslist where you request items and we're then another party can respond to you both go in an escrow and then the deal is being paid out and reputations are being minted so we have the very very very basic interface to do items on a marketplace as you can see we're almost there so you can do this now life on swarmed city so as we at least we got that far and that we could release this yeah you can do this yourself so what it looks like now are in our boardwalk release we have the whole identity thing going on you can create a request on a hash tag which is a marketplace you can reply to it select a reply ur payout going to conflict or the marketplace owner can resolve the conflict yeah you can try that now so but where we want to be which was our initial promise is what we call our storefront release so all the other things features you can do but we want to have like a nice graphical user interface to book a right eventually that will become like an uber like experience but we're thinking now more of a blah blah card where you just reserve your seat in an existing car and it's good it should look or it could look a little bit like this you all know this by now right it's basically the standards uber lyft kind of interface we think everybody nailed that pretty good so there's nothing new there so we think after having many talks with data front and Greg or we think we can make this happen on swarm for marketplaces we could use farm feeds for the messaging PSS data storage BCC of course but this is the interesting part we really believe that the personal data of the user should be in the hands of the user and so Whitford take the society the ideas to actually develop a fare drive which you just connect to the interface and then you magically have all your personal data there and you have your identity there if you want to know more about further data Society I I suggest you talk to Craig or but this is like you know what it could look like in the interface you create an account instead of creating a new account you just connect your fare drive oh and can I tell you you know because I had to stress this a little bit fare drive is just like any there's more names floating around like multi books own Drive I think it was last night yeah so anyway it said we're just like looking for names for now and then it's this is of course really important so arm City will also be packaged as a deaf note package so you can run it on your deaf note and then connect from anywhere in the world or let your friends connect to it from anywhere in the world and enjoy unstoppable ride-sharing or you can always just visit from City Iran since we are no longer well we never were a company but now we're not even like a nice youth project anymore because there are no shared funds left so this is what we still want to achieve luckily there's still a lot of us around the project and we keep working on it but if you want to help that's actually why I'm here is just like to invite all of you if you believe that we need freedom of movement for all in a simple open source app that's what we're trying to do you can share our goal just talk about it help please help with development or if you're a rich guy fund our fare data society campaigns and give it oh and this is basically my too long didn't read so some City right share will be on swarm it will be totally open source let's build it together we really want to contribute to anything 30 that society is doing so come and help us please [Applause] questions I probably have more questions for you guys though so I'm interested about ratings so you say that that part already works and one of the hard parts with ratings is that typically in order for them to work well it's important that before the two transacting parties rate each other they cannot see each other's ratings how do so how did you solve that sorry you say it's important before two parties engage each other so ratings become visible to either party only after they have rated the other parties so that you cannot make your rating contingent on rating well there is no rating system whatsoever I don't it's it's a personal belief but most of the team thinks this I don't think like human subjective emotional data should be on a chain so the only thing we store is the actual successful transaction so if you go look at someone's reputation score it just tells you like in this marketplace he did this many successful deals there is no rating no you don't know you don't know what you can't see is like how many conflict conflicts did this for instance this driver had right so if you see like he is like your 20% conflict rate I wouldn't want to be in that car thank you and it seems to be it yeah thank you so much [Applause]
