so today I'm gonna present this little creature here which is one of many implementations of blockchain based live phone so what is exactly a blockchain be is live from well it is an entity that lives on the blockchain and that comes with specific characteristics so one it is autonomous in the sense that there is no single entity that can actually control the way it operates secondly it is self-sufficient in the sense that it can collect the resources that it needs in order to survive and it is just like any other life form it is capable of reproducing itself and so this is mostly like can expect an artistic experiment and the idea was to illustrate in the physical world what does it mean to be a dhow and how we can actually reproduce and make now evolve so this is plantoids number five which is the child of one toilet number three which is itself the child of montage number one which was the genesis plan toyed and so how does a plant oil reproduce so the plan thought is the Android version of a plant and as opposed to traditional plants which reproduced who the pollination process which essentially requires the help of top artists whether those are bees of butterflies that will actually help them in the repetition process a plant oil actually relies on the capitalisation process and so they also need the help of third parties in order to reproduce and knead this case they actually rely on human beings that are willing to donate to them some cryptocurrencies and so the planet is essentially made up of two distinct components so one is the body which is make a mechanical and electronic a sculpture and then the spirit the soul of the plant I'd which is essentially a smart contract on data and blockchain and those two components interact with each other in order to bring the planter to life and in order to enable it to reproduce itself so this is the way in which to point out operates you know the production process so we can go through every step the first step is the capitalisation process so this is when the plant art is essentially making itself pretty and begging for money and then whenever so every plant orders its own wallet and then whenever it gets fed it just shows appreciation I'm just gonna give it a little bit of funds and [Music] usually it's in say thank you so every plant has its own little mechanism of saying thank you so this one is just moving some people some are making music or just like some light show and this the way it works is that they each have their own bitcoin wallet and then within the brain of the plant order is a pie that is monitoring the balance and then whenever it sees that the balance has changed and it does a little dance and then the interesting part is that so every plant or it requires a particular amount of cryptocurrencies in order to be able to reproduce itself and whenever it identified that it has collected sufficient amount of funds then it's triggering the smart contract on the interim blockchain which then will lead the second phase of the production which is the mating phase and so this is where the planted will actually look for a particular human being which is willing to reproduce it and the way this works is that it opens this call for bids and then anyone can submit propositions on the eternal contract as to how to envision to produce the next plant ID and then all the people that fund the plant ID in the first place can then vote on those specific propositions and the vote is weighted with the amount of funds that they are invested in the first place and then eventually then the smart condo just passes all this information and identified the actual winner of the call for bids and this leads to the third phase of the prediction which is the hiring phase and this is one the plant ID will transfer the funds that it has collected so far to the selected winner which is then hired by the plant ID in order to produce a new piece so this is the current evolution of the plant ID which the last one that has been created recently this point had got a big grant and cannot reproduce itself into a few more plantoids so the the the way it works is that there is evolution within this so every plant or it comes with its own DNA or genetic code so for instance plan toid one was essentially the one criteria was that everything be released under Creative Commons licenses and then every artist that creates a new plant out can need to respect all the genetic code from the previous one and can add their own specific requirements so this one supplant ID 3 which was issued from plant I'd want for instance was requiring to have wins and so this one planted five also has links and in addition to that it has the new requirement which it needs to have a little rainbow light so whenever it is fat and the idea is that so the planter that are the most appreciated by the public either because of the physical aspect or because of the government structure so different plantoids will implement different mechanism of government so currently this is mostly a plutocracy in which people like you basically vote with your car with the amount of funds that you have given to the planted but ideally we will create now we can experiment with the Dow's TAC team to actually create new mechanism to have like the Ola graphic consensus system and so forth and so the planter data the most interesting either physically or intellectually will be the one that collect the most money and the far will be the one that would be able to reproduce more into those different species of branches of a plant I'd the pyramid scheme which is very essential as an incentive ization system so whenever the plant would reproduce itself it is sending a little bit of the funds back to its parent so to the planter that actually created it and a little bit of those funds also go to the artist that actually made it and so this creates a positive incentive for the art is not just to collect the money and make the plant out as simply as possible but to actually try and make the most interesting one and to promote it and to actually encourage the reproduction the half because the Maltese planted will reproduce then the more the artist will eventually be able to collect funds to the planted and put the old ascendency of it and then hammam are legal and philosophical aspect one of the interesting aspect of this is that it kind of like reverse the the model of copyright law in which today we rely on the exclusivity and on the on the notion of funding an artist with the hope that these artists will continue to produce art piece that we enjoy whereas we can now fund the art piece itself and it is up to the art piece to the side eventually who will be the artist that is entitled to produce the new plant ID so again this is the the genealogy and then a very big news is that the planted has actually been under store this year for Burning Man so it will well we are now building very large that will go to the player if there is anyone that actually is interested in helping out that will be with very big pleasure but in the physical aspect and in the math contract design so there will be three different LAN tides at the playa and we want to design innovative government structures for them and then the question then is that since so since it was just a little artist and no one really cared but now that is going to Burning Man people are actually starting to ask very different question than before and mostly people are wondering whether there might be some kind of legal and contractual requirement that needs to be made so the idea with the plant orders are not to experiment was just to show how you we can actually create those dolls without a physical or not and how we don't really need to incorporate any of those things so we don't really need to deal with you within the traditional legal framework and then the question then is what happened when we when this plant ID is actually hiring an individual to produce a new plant or is it really hiring it and is there a real contractual relationship connected to that and especially what is the party were the parties of the contract and what is the object of that contract so the object of the contract obviously is the creation of a new plant I'd the parties it's kind of complicated because obviously in the existing legal framework the plant oh it really be a party to the contract and so who is actually the person that he is hiding the artist to make the new plant or is it the original author that actually created the initial plants in that case it will be me is it the new artist that actually created the next plant or down the line and then in terms of contractual agreements then is does it does it need to be staff a need for actually creating a new contract all the time or can we actually design a legal master agreement in which everyone that is actually participating into the creation of all the different planted within the genealogy needs to comply with this master agreement and then whenever they create a new plant I'd have to create a new master agreement with the changes within the DNA code that are participating to this and and then perhaps most interestingly because it seems that most people are now worried about dyes like what happen if there is a breach of contract so what happen if the plant that is hiring someone to create a new version of itself according to specific criteria which are codified within the DNA code but obviously the smart contract cannot check whether or not the person that will make the descendant of this plant will actually implement the wings and so what happened if the plant that is hiring these new artists and the new artist is actually not complying with the requirements of this contract so is there a breach of contract and in that case who is actually entitled to sue for this breach of contract so if it was relying on copyright it will be much easier because basically the copyright holder gets the hi to sue so in this case it will be me or whoever artist as created the Plantard but because they are all on the hoc creative common license then it's more difficult to to sue anyone just because they take copy at the design and then there is the other interesting part because so this plant art is a little bit harmless but as they become bigger and has they start playing with fire then there is the question of what if someone actually gets hard with a plant art and who will be responsible so we have the problem of product liability so will that be the person that actually built the plant hood and that actually made a mistake perhaps is it like the software developer that I'd surely hated this map contract and this mark on it didn't work properly and just spit fire on it was not the right moment and unbound someone is it the people that actually misused the deposit and that just should not have been close to this or is it than the point of itself and the plant will actually be held liable for its own tart and so the way the way we deal today and this is the exact same question that we have in terms of autonomous vehicle and so far so when we have those autonomous agents or autonomous device then how can we actually impute responsibility so the traditional solution to this is obviously to have like generalized insurance and to require that people that are actually deploying those devices in the world and getting sure in case that there is an actual talked and then the new question that are actually melting into the legal research and academia is done well perhaps if I'm actually responsible for like every possible talked that device is that I'm building will be closing to the wall then am i and I actually not be encouraged to actually deploy does the system at all and so can we actually come up with some form of limited liability in order that the people that as long as the product is certified and as long as the software is also certified and that no one is actually doing anything wrong no one is hacking into the system it just happens that this device is actually closing at all then can we actually have some form of legal liability and in this case we attack with the question then it goes back to the question of legal personhood so in the same way as we as well as the question can the point would actually be responsible for hiring someone and therefore enter into a contractual relationship it requires legal capacity can the plaintiff actually sue if someone is not complying with the legal requirement but as well can the plant or it be sued itself if it's actually causing a tort and so there is a lot of thinking going on especially with AI but that I think can be quite easily related as well with blockchain based system which is can we actually provide this a form of legal personhood our legal capacity to those autonomous device so that on the one hand they can actually own assets on properties and on the other hand they also can take part in to contractual agreements that they can hold legal Heights and obligation and possibly enter into legal proceedings and then obviously the the interesting thing with this is that even if we do actually provide this form of legal capacity or legal personhood and if we can recognize those plaintiffs and actually autonomous legal agents the question is that in the real world we have property rights which are actually defined by the law and the four can be taken away and through the law whereas when we enter into a blockchain base system we have this new notion of crypto property in which the the point at which actually holds those assets is the sole possible owner because these properties actually defined under foreign fast by the blockchain so as an assuming that the plaintiff actually could be sued because the legal system will actually recognize this as a legal personhood then even if a court will say that indeed some of the fans of the plantain has to be paid to the person that has been harmed then there is actually no way for a legal enforcement to be up and to to be done on the assets of the planted only if the plant are actually incorporated within its own smart contract the ability to actually listen to a court then will those assets be able to to be transferred so that's about it everyone is welcome to feed the planet if you wish and if you're interested in helping out for the building of the new last thought so so yes you need some body that executes Steve the the kind of the verdict of a court in terms of like sending that transaction and authorized to send the transaction that basically confiscates some some frozen funds for Fort Worth compensation yeah I was wondering if you think that that's a problematic bit at all I mean is it not just possible to implement this just need to design this contract so that it is actually open to accept external intervention and then in that case it's absolutely possible I'm not saying it's impossible I'm just saying that we need to design as we actually have been in the system and as we want them to interact increasingly with the real world and with the existing legal system than this map contract need to be designed beforehand in order to be able to interact with that yes I think so it just it just seems to be not so different from the real world like we kind of implicitly if permission to two state authorities to confiscate our I mean we don't even it's like by by virtue of being a citizen you you give permission to stay to confiscate your your holdings if if you assignment and and and the court court verdict is to is for you to compensate I am the owner of something because the law recognizing us the owner of something right what has in the blockchain world I own something because the court is defining me as the owner of this so the I might be the technical owner and not be the legal owner have something and then the question is how do we actually bridge the gap just one question I didn't understand how to know who owns the plant oh ho hold it physically you know who can transfer it bring in the at home for example the plant would yes no but yes but anyway someone needs to take it with you with him you you it will not stay here on the table it's like it's like your teacher it's like an animal wants a dog about I mean for example if someone here wants to take it at home so I mean again who I mean the physical answer is no one on the point out because the point is an autonomous collection based life form the reality is that actually this needs to be codified within the governance right so you could design a model by which the people that funded it gets to have a time share that the people that found that it gets to decide who it's gonna be I mean you can design pretty much any model right now most of the government's like all the five planters have a very very basic government structure because I just didn't bother to actually make it more sophisticated but that's that's exactly the question is today and you know ideally perhaps the Plantard will have like very sophisticated mechanism and the Python perhaps needs to actually pay hands you know that to actually be someone because it's also using electricity like you can actually come up with concepts but again like so far the plants have mostly been focused on like the physical aspect so the evolutionary model was mainly like how do we actually design the next plant art now I think it's getting more and more interesting to actually focus on the government structure and you can have like you know for instance you couldn't have a plant I that is more of like a capitalistic plant or I'm investing in the point that I might get a return on investment and then to actually see over time what are the different governments that are the most appealing to the environment so how do you design the planter that is the most fit and what are what are the things that the human beings like the most and the far will be willing to fund more you know and if these involves that the founder needs to be able to host the plant or that might be one thing but we don't know the idea is that you just leave them evolve and then the evolution of algorithm will actually tell us which one of the characteristics that are the most appealing to a given environment no I'm not actually the whole point of the planet is to illustrate that you can design systems that do not actually need to interact with the laws so that that's my goal as an artistic statement now what I find the thing is that since since it actually has became popular and especially since it's now coming to Burning Man I have a lot of people starting to trying to convince me for instance to create a foundation to kind of create a legal structure around it because supposedly I might be liable if something happen or because people are afraid that people will not follow the rules and so and so what I'm what I'm exploring and is not something I'm endorsing is something I'm just looking at what are the various possibilities is how do we actually design this bridge how do we get the bridge the gap between like the technical operating system of the blockchain and the legal operating system and one possibility that is mostly raised in the case of AI which is that there is a the same way of we created corporations which have a moral personality legal personality then can we actually provide a legal personality of legal capacity to autonomous agents right and the question to this is like it's it's a very like brainstorming aspect at the moment but the question is if we want to actually create new economic agents you know the reason we created our corporations because we want to hit new economic agents and because individual actually want to protect themselves from liability right so as you create autonomous blockchain base agents then and you want to interact with those as economic agents then if there is no legal incorporation so if I don't create an actual company or a foundation of something that is associated with that then you need to come up with like more sophisticated mechanism the the obvious example was in the case of the Dow that they created the Dow link was this company that was bridging so that people that want to interact with the Dow as just a smart contact will interact with a company and then the company dowling will actually interact with the Dow so that the people from the normal world they are actually just not Indian tonight we do blockchain because it will don't make sense as if sweet song and other specific laws in which you can actually interact it does not contract then we can use these as these bridge between the two systems so what I'm trying to do with this is actually explore that so we have this thing that is a blockchain base it's not contract and then but it also exists in the in the physical world and people from the physical world are also wanting to interact with that so if I'm hired by the Plantard which of my Heights as as the artist and what are the obligation are the hearts of the planted on the other side and do we actually need to create this foundation or whatever it is in order for people to be able to real interact with that or can we actually design technical solutions that might achieve the same goal I mean I don't have the answer to that it's an explanation sorry I think I understand the philosophy behind the planetoid being that it's autonomous therefore nobody owns it but if you try to apply basic legal concepts to the question of if there really no owner there can it be resolved like basically it's an artist who's being hired to make a piece of art and is being hired by several persons who don't know each other and they are anonymous to each other and so they pay the artist and the artist creates something so can it be considered as a common ownership with the owner being anonymous to each other which is something that wouldn't be unknown in the you know ordinary landscape I mean listed companies for instance the owners are the shoulders they don't know each other yes I mean one one way in which you can interpret this is that the funders of the Plantard are actually emergently creating general partnership and as a general partnership they are hiring an artist to actually create so that's a possibility the thing is that so there is no there is not defined legal answer to that there are many ways in which if there is an actual problem then the court will actually always try and identify who's the closest available person and that's gonna be the person that is either the the person that is liable or the person that is responsible or potentially contractually related with the new artist and so the question though is like if we actually want to design something then what is the technology and structures that we can devise in order for this to be the close as possible to the goal of having this thing being this autonomous being right I so understand here I understand the idea that so community selects the next artist and it's even symbolic or thing because it's not even necessary to discuss exactly how it's going to work but for example so that the government structure that you have to select the artist I guess that if that also is up to growing and to changing over time then I would think that probably the way that it changes is also through the current government system so basically the next pot plant oil it will be chosen the items will be chosen metacommunity but I guess also the governance structure to select its child is also decided by that current community right and then this team will design but the physical design and the government design knowing that it will have to abide by the genetic criteria that has been part before so for instance so one of the point IDs is that charity for instance so it means that health of its plan is such a donating into something which has been codified as part of the DNA of the government so all the child's children of this plant ID will have to implement the same government structure right but the governance structure is part of the proposal potentially so the people that are choosing they might actually be encouraged to select one proposal harder than the other but because it's appealing physically but also because it's appealing from a government perspective it also always needs to adapt from the previous governance structure yeah hi how you in the case that the artist the like can deliver the project like what happens with the money or with the project itself if the artist is not deliver yeah that's a good question it would be like much of contract so at the moment there is no solution to that because again the government system is super stupid but ideally for instance it will be like milestone based so the planet will not just give all the money all at once but will provide a specific amount of money and then wait for some milestones and then when people approved that the milestone has been achieved then the next installment will be given so again this is something that needs to be built into the small contract and you know we need to we need to figure out what's the best way to do that thank you
