hello my name is my name is Danny Ryan I work with the etherium foundation I work on the research team I do some research a lot of spec writing some development testing a lot of client coordination to try to keep this e 2 project moving forward and today especially cuz reddit active on I want to highlight that we're really moving into a new phase in this project in that up until recently it's been a lot of like core protocol development but it's really beginning to turn in a phase where a lot of hackers community members can really begin to get more and more involved so until recently it's been a project really dominated by protocol researchers and protocol engineers some of which are here some fantastic engineers in the house that are building this out and you know what everyone gets a gold star people been working their asses off well for over a year now and things are coming to fruition but at this point it's really time to usher in like the next wave of contributors just engineers designers UX UI validators are gonna start getting the hands dirty educators a lot of good educational efforts going around auditors academics got some good papers in the pipeline and just the community in general and I'm I'm really eager to give out some more gold stars and maybe a ton of them so today I want to talk to you about just the state of things and how where things are today and how you can begin to get involved and maybe some ideas for hacks this weekend so we've been building we've building a lot what are we building we're building a scalable proof of stake infrastructure and there's some nuance to that I'm not sometimes usually I get up in talks and I talk about this thing this is like the architecture of the thing we're building I won't spend a lot of time on it but we are building this scalable infrastructure that has many shard chains to scale out the things that we know and love and aetherium and actually the end goal is to not have this eighth one chain exists there anymore but instead following Piper's research and development slot a stateless aetherium that we know and love today into this scalable infrastructure to give it native access to scalable data prove mistakes security and to eliminate proof of work in that hefty block reward so happy to talk about this happy to dig in there's a ton of like experts at this system and we can we can chat about it all weekend but I won't spend too much time on that right now so we're trying to provide at multi-dimensional scale we're scaling out security boo boo snake has some fundamental benefits in security because the assets securing the protocol is native and so we can do not just reward people but punish them if they're bad we're scaling out data in the form of these mini shard chains and we're scaling out computation by adding native execution on to these shards and that's actually the phases of our development you can think of we have this thing called phase zero phase one and phase two phase zero is really like bringing together the core security the core infrastructure phase one is adding the scalable data and phase two is adding the scalable computation so where we have today the the system is what we've been working on the core system we call this the beacon chain this provides core mechanisms finality it provides the scaffolding upon which the shard chains will be built and has validator management randomness incentivization and this is really if you've heard about what's going on with these tests nets and and where things are at this core system this that the the other components of the system architected upon is where where all the effort has been today I don't really know what those images are so but where are the clients at today we have many new clients depending on the day seven or eight and this is an incredible thing once this the EQ project began to get some concrete specs a lot of people came out of the woodwork and are excited to build this thing so we have a ton of client diversity in many different languages this adds the robustness ultimately of the network of one client gets das the other ones kind of take up the load and I love clients of many different languages because it provides having a robust client implementation in a language it's really provides a gateway into the system because that Perez allow the core infrastructure the core tooling and kind of the whole developer ecosystem can blossom and bloom out of a client implementation as more and more people get involved so anyway where are we at today we have many single client tests Nets clients are heavily focused on optimizations to reduce the load of this core system chain that's really important because the beacon chain is this highly available component of the system pretty much if you're syncing any shard or one shard or ten shards or all the shards you run this beacon chain in conjunction with it and so we want we want beacon chains to be run everywhere we want this like core system level piece to be run very easily very cheaply and so optimizations are crucial a lot of effort going into validator and user onboarding getting more and more people to play with these things 6cl eyes have you interfaces UX UI instability these systems need to have almost 100% uptime and work under crazy Network conditions and so this is you know it's heroic work going on with these client teams and there's a number of them here today and this weekend that would can tell you all about it like I mentioned before now that we have this like this core the core protocols coming together we have an increasing amount of activity spawning from from spawning out from the center block explorers Network visualizers dev tools proto's got this great network rep he's working on a lot of audits going on econ audits deep audits das audits from a verification we're kind of tying formal proofs of some of the things that we really care about like safety and liveness to the protocol a lot of academic analysis validator tools bounty hunters I want to give a shout out to Hermann don't know your last name but Hermann found it potential overflow and respect the other day he's our first winner of a bounty we're gonna be next week doing some fanfare around the official launching relaunching of the bounty program and you it's a hackathon I know people like to get their hands dirty with like daps and build on some stuff but like there is a huge chance because the ec2 is in kind of its infancy and really rapidly expanding right now to make your mark to make a new service provider make a new tool that's gonna make validators lives easy and and kind of snowball and grow with the ecosystem so we at the EF have posted some eight Denver bounties these are very they're open-ended but there's some great ideas on there in that we're gonna give a 25-hundred reward for first place fifteen hundred and a thousand for second and third and the idea is to you know take a more integrative approach take some test nets build out new tooling make you know just it's get your hands dirty and play with what is out there and kind of enhance the burgeoning growing new ecosystem I'm stalling a little bit if you want that it's there it's on some of the ember resources we're tweeting it check it out there's a lot of people including myself that would love to talk to you about bounding ideas and help you work through some stuff throughout this weekend check it out so I want to go over some of the some of the hacks you might think about it's just a sample it's not what you must do but just get get your bigger thoughts going so there's a few clients that do have test nets and if you were to hack on test nets try to break test nets any kind of that fun stuff you check out prism Lighthouse Nimbus prisms written and go lighthouse is written in Rus and Nimbus is written in NIM which is a cool like pythonic compiled language check it out some tests net ideas you know we until today a lot of these tests Nets have been operating on near like 100% honesty just because validator show up like potential users in the community show up they run run the software and just like crank it out watch the number go up or number go down depending on if they have a good connection so but more and more we want to see people try to break things how many validators you need to control how many nodes TV in control to really do something nefarious on a network and if you're able to do something nefarious can the other nodes kind of handle the may be potential extra load resolve themselves and work from there so evil validators you know can you make multiple blocks when your only system make one can you make at the stations that try to partition the network and mess up finality partition network could be really interesting to write some tools to spin up some local test nuts and then our orchestrated partition and them everything kind of turns along and then resolve the petition all of a sudden what type of load exhibits on both the network as a whole and on individual clients and and can the partitions be resolved safely noisy Network we have a new handshake protocol working on lid PDP protocol called the p2p noise protocol so there's some opportunity to potentially influent that protocol and embedded in a network but sky's limit there's a lot of cool stuff to do and you know if you're into just like scripts and tools and networks and stuff like DevOps kind of stuff like it'd be a pretty fun weekend to mess with some of this stuff test sent resources lighthouse the past couple days have put together they spun up a new test net last night with 4,000 validators they kept the number of relatively low to be easy to sync and potentially be easier to attack so check out that link for their they put together an eighth member specific book they're going to be available to help you hack pry labs net Prismatic his from static labs are running like a 35,000 validator net it's Chuck Long's pretty cool and the NIMBY contained a relaunch a net every week so you can check out their net and all these you can run them like local small networks on your machine or spin them up as you go oh I'm sorry I'm jiggling my computer web tools monitoring huge shout-outs lodestar lodestar is a JavaScript client and they're packaging all of their modules into these like sub packages and there's a ton of them but because of that and because it's written in JavaScript it's a great tool to begin to use to build out browser-based and developer friendly things for example some of the hacks you might think about or hack part of lodestar on a webpage maybe summarize beacon States verify deposits before validator cinnamon for extra safety take one of the test nets and monitor deposits monitor validator states all sorts of cool stuff super shout-out to these guys and came and I don't think he's here yet but the lead on the project is around all weekend and yep enhanced tech and monitoring techo is in java Artemis it was named Artemis it's recently been changed to tech ooh they have some cool stuff there on the on the cusp and I think they're running some like local networks and are about to be in that test net ready phase so there's some cool stuff to help them get to where they where they want to be and gem this guy over here is one of the leads on the project he's here this weekend to chat with you if you're interested in getting involved Mobile last how come in dimension is the Nimbus guys last week managed to hack some phones and get Nimbus and MB keychain running on a test net of mobile devices I think it took some like routing and kind of bypassing normal normal safety mechanisms in Android so an extension of the work would be potentially to run Nimbus within an Android app and then a more like sanction environment easier for people to get going and if you can get it running on those phones bonus points cool so it's er TL DR is uh like this project is increasingly there for you to hack on get involved run some test nuts break things have a good time and dig in and if you if you want to make a mark like now like the next next few months the next six months is a great time to like really make a mark on e - I think I have extra I've left plenty of time I'm happy to take questions both about e to infrastructure about e to direction roadmap about and also about in any tax and if I can't answer the question some of these guys can because we have a bunch of client engineers and stuff in the house questions please come to the mic so that on the live stream they can hear you sorry I'm in the mic over here I'm just waving my hands in there this one right here my bad how do you manage your bounties this is just like a manual process how do we manage the process of the bounties still top-down myself and proto are gonna be judging they're gonna be judged on the usefulness to eath to in the coming months honestly it's whether it's making a tangible impact on the e - E - a good system oh the bounties yeah so we had a bounty program we had previously frozen the specification last June and had a bounty program on github the standards were pretty much like whether you find something in which like we actually have to change the spec this was this bounty program was suspended after DEFCON because we had a number of spec changes and we're about to re-release and this time I think we're gonna have a few different ranks like critical bugs not so critical but essentially the standard is did we find something that is that we need to make Stan shil changes aspect the bounty program we make we have a release of the spec coming out next week and which will relaunch the bounty program but if you find something this weekend and you break the spec I'm you get a bounty like if you want a bounty hunt this weekend by all means any other questions a lot of us like sleep breathe eat live this stuff we're here all weekend happy to always have you talk about it always happy to work through technical stuff happy to bounce ideas around and get more people involved but last chance well I'm up here okay we got proto we got Michael from White House gym mat from quilt Ivan from frizz Matic there's a lot of people here that want to help out and help you get involved in run tests and do cool stuff this weekend so I'll come find us thank you [Music] [Laughter] [Music] you
