all right now we can get started all right everybody thanks for joining us today uh this is the town hall for the uh 2025 version of the ethereum protocol study group uh my name's Josh and I'm here with Mario we work with the ethereum foundation on the protocol support team uh working on a few different initiatives to help support the protocol um so yeah once again thanks for being here uh we have a short little presentation to give to you just to give you a little bit of information about what the study group is and how you can participate and what you can expect and then we'll leave the majority of the time for a Q&A for us to answer any questions you have or comments or anything like that um if you have questions while the presentation is going on please just go ahead and throw them in the chat um and then we will get to them at the end um if you're seeing the grid right now there is a little tab that says Josh D's screen that has a very clear what it looks like to be a screen share uh you'll want to click on that if you would like to look at the presentation um so yeah uh we'll go ahead and get started all right so first of all what is the ethereum protocol studies group well it is a initiative that we started last year to basically give people who are interested in uh working in cord development or having a better understanding of the core ethereum protocol a way to have some structured learning around around that um ethereum's core protocol is very vast and resources are very spread out and and widespread and it's can be pretty challenging to know where to start or have you know a a good semblance of where do I go to learn about this specific thing um so we've created a curriculum for people to have some structured learning around um jumping into to knowing more about the core protocol um in addition to that it is a community resource that um that we create through this process so we'll talk a little bit more about this a little bit later in the presentation but um we've created this resource called [Music] epf.kp.org about uh the core protocol and then finally it is this community that is here to support each other in learning um both in these sort of uh like yearly sessions as well as outside of that so who is this program for well the program is for really anybody that's interested in learning about how ethereum works under the hood but a little bit more specifically it is for people who are interested in becoming a core developer somebody who works on a client team somebody who is interested in working in the research field for uh upcoming ethereum upgrades um and people who are just generally interested in making contributions to to ethereum um additionally it can be helpful for app developers who are interested in knowing about how the software Works um the things that you know that their apps run on certainly can help them to make more streamlined apps or make specific design decisions and as ethereum continues to evolve and upgrade uh you know there are new features that are that are implemented that can also be effective for for people who are developing applications um this program is also somewhat of a precursor to the ethereum protocol Fellowship uh which if you don't know what that is uh it is a more focused program uh that we run from June to November that is uh dedicated towards um people who want to take some of this knowledge and start to use it in implementing uh contributions to to ethereum so we uh offer some structure and some guidance in how to um you know start making your way into the world of contributing to ethereum the way that this program is going to work is um so this is the second year that we are running this program um the first year was obviously last year and over uh I think I want to say it was 10 weeks we um put together a curriculum for the 10 weeks that uh gave you an introduction to a lot of the bits of ethereum as well as some deep dives into some specific topics uh we have all of that content still and so we're going to use that content as a way to sort of speedrun um the jump in to to this uh to this learning process so um the program is going to start on next Monday the 17th of February and it's going to start with two two to three weeks of intensive um daily viewing of this uh content from last year and so so that you can get up to speed um and then during those two weeks we will host a 60 to 90 minute office hours on Discord where you know if you're confused about something that's being discussed in the video you can ask questions will be available on The Voice channels if that's something that's necessary but basically here to help you to um unblock any roadblocks that you're having explain anything that might be confusing to you or um just better help you understand uh what's happening in those videos uh those Discord office hours will be at uh 1500 UTC or 3M UTC uh and it will be usually will be Mario and myself there as well as potentially some of the um students from last year's study group as well as um potentially some of the mentors and teachers that are in in those lessons and then the final six weeks are going to be new content we'll be doing one um one session per week uh it will be a live session that you you all will join and um be able to interact with with the researcher or core developer who giving you the information um these sessions are going to be focused on deep dives into the execution layer and the consensus layer and then we will have a series of videos about where the stateof the-art of research is and and how that um interplays with the ethereum R map all right I think I'm going to pass it off to Mario if you would like to take it away sure thanks so much Josh um right so that was some uh basic about the the schedule of what the program is and now uh what to expect uh from the program what the program expects from you guys uh so first of all uh this this program uh the study group is highly technical it's uh about the actual development part the ethereum about the actual core protocol um so expect some uh some requirement of uh computer science knowledge informatics um uh and this doesn't go very deep it really depends on where you're coming from who you're from and what you're interested in uh like uh if you are if you don't have Computer Science Background you can still attend the study group can still learn a lot um you might have harder time diving into some of the topics uh but expect that that you will have to learn on the side also some some new uh uh computer science things that you might not be familiar with uh we will start from the uh from uh easier topics and it will get progressively more technical so the first uh week uh is is there for everyone uh but then it might get uh might recover more time to to uh get up to speed with uh uh with more examples from the actual code or the specific ations and so on and again uh this is all uh about the actual core protocol of ethereum which means the ethereum platform the client implementations the nodes that are running the network the the software uh that that enables ethereum happen on these thousands of computers in a this network so we talk about this actual Network actually the actual client software how it's implemented what is the architecture what are the different uh uh protocols within uh within uh within the clients and and uh how it's tested how it's researched all of the parts about the the actual low-level development so we'll be seeing examples from lowlevel languages uh like uh go and Java and rust and uh and so on uh it's not uh again is not focused on solidity or any app level development any contracts on ethereum we will not talk about contracts at all uh only about some parts of the evm which might uh uh which might change how how something on app player works but generally we talk about the protocol itself um uh so so uh to set your expectations what you actually learn in this program and what uh what background you should come come here with again even if you're not a developer even if you are not uh if you if you are uh haven't studied any sort of informatics uh you can you can still learn a lot and it's uh I believe it's still very accessible um however uh it is Technical and if you already have some some uh developer computer background it will be much easier to to get up to speed uh with the ethereum topics and um so from your side uh to be able to follow the study group we would expect during the first two three weeks uh which is the the first two weeks are the most intense where we will be following all the curriculum for the last uh last year uh what Josh said so the existing content we will uh we will study together as a community we will hold these office hours and that I would say requires minimum of two hours a day uh which is like 60 90 minutes to watch the video uh the the recordings from last year uh these lectures that we have um are 90 minutes uh however you can watch them bit faster 1.25 1.5 you know some people speak slowly so you can just watch it a bit faster you save some time so so even if you spend like one hour on the video and then another hour of studying the the extra materials or or the wiki or the uh or spend spending it with us at the office hours disc discussing what you learned so I would say that at least two hours a day uh in the first in the first uh two weeks to really get up to speed and be able to to learn something again if you don't have uh any theum background any computer science background you may need more time to be able to study more to uh to understand all the dependencies all the uh all the extra information you need to you need to get get um get to know uh but it's only the first uh two or uh three weeks uh the remaining six weeks uh uh we will do only two sessions uh a week uh which means uh two 90 minute sessions uh lectures from uh from um uh uh the core developers uh diving uh deeper into the consensus execution layer uh road map what Josh mentioned um and this these lectures will be up to 90 minutes uh you can do both for just one a week and again you can uh it's up to you whether you uh whether you want to uh study some extra materials so I would say that then it's only like maybe three hours uh weekly um on the lower side which you what you should dedicate uh but what I want to emphasize here is that it's really up to you guys uh this program is completely open uh it's here for the ethereum community uh this is a public good this is a public knowledge we are like a open University here for anybody learning about etherium and we don't provide any grades we don't force you to to uh do anything here so it's really up to you uh your self Direction your self-dedication what you are willing to do what you able to do how much time you want to spend on this um so if you are you know if you're willing to do uh many hours a day if you have that spare time if you are so dedicated to ethereum you can uh you can really spend a lot of time on this uh if you if you do it as on a on a side of your studies or work or something you dedicate only a few hours that's also enough for you it's it's really uh you can kind tailor the experience by yourself by how much time and uh you want to dedicate or what you're interested in again uh we will cover different parts of the protocol many different topics so you can also choose um sort of the topics that you're interested in uh yeah regarding the schedule if you head to the EPF weki intro we have the link there later um uh you can see the schedule for the first week so you have roughly idea what topics we will cover in the first week and um uh again if you're starting from the zero I recommend attending everything uh but if you already know some topics you might want to choose what you are most interested in and uh yes so our expectation is for you to be like self-directed and and choose uh how much time you are uh Mak sense for you to dedicate to this and uh this is just talking about now we are just talking about the a learning side of things but you can also give back so uh when we are we are a community which is uh creating this program uh we are building it together it's not just me and Josh organizing this but everyone here can participate and contribute either by discussions in the in the office hours participating in Discord answering other people questions if you if you see somebody asking something something basic go ahead and know answer the the question you don't have to wait for ask to answer or anyone else if you know the answer or you can discuss maybe some sometimes we don't even know the answers right um there there are some three questions out there so generally like uh consider is a community where you learn something and then you give back by discussing but most importantly we have the EPF Wiki so the EPF Wiki The protocol studies repository is a community run repository Community R Run Wiki uh where uh we are documenting all the the protocol but again it's not not not me or Josh who are uh writing this Wii but it's the community there are dozens of contributors uh there are people from the previous study group who have been uh building this and uh I invite you to also contribute so uh basically after you spend some of the first uh week or two uh studying the basics uh you can uh you can uh uh contribute back to the wiki uh um so there is uh uh generally almost all of the core protocol core development uh domains covered uh it's all um of the consensus layer execution layer uh research topics you can find it all there when you open the EPF Wiki website you can see the first part that uh is the the study group what we are uh the the curriculum that we prepared for you and the other part is the wiki itself uh um um and as as Wiki tradition goes this is really just uh open and Community maintained so during your studies there even during the first week um uh if you when you are using the wiki to to study and you see something missing you see a you see a typo there right you can always open a PR and you can fix something uh you can uh so it will be mostly me and the the people from the previous study group uh approving these PRS it might take some uh day or something to get the review but uh you can always uh always contribute back so uh this is also sort of an exercise for you guys another part of the study group is learning technical writing and learning uh using git and collaboration on this is non software project but it's still a technical project it's a technical documentation that um that we are maintaining and it's it's a it's a big piece of documentation because the the the protocol is big and I still believe it needs a lot of work we create this this ground workor last year but there is still of stuff to do so if you open it now you see uh you see some gaps there feel free to fill them and again we will be doing these daily sessions where uh you can watch the video from last year you can follow some of the materials suggested by the speaker but then you can also find this topic in the EPF Wiki uh so check what the wiki says about it and if you see something from the materials or something else that you found during your research missing there feel free to add it so it's all Community built Community maintained um some of you guys might later become maintainers if you are the most active people who want to continuously contribute will become maintainers there there are people uh currently maintaining and contributing to the wiki from the year ago when uh the first study group started so um I would like to get more uh more people to have more of us Comm Community doing this and be the like the best technically oriented collection of resources we have yeah yes so that's about the wiki and uh um being the um the the study material uh and about some more resources you can use so again here is where you find the EPF Wiki uh the this is the the front facing website the front end where you can you can uh read it but if you want to see the source uh it's the uh protocol studies repository you can find it there uh in the same GitHub organization uh you find all of the previous EPF cords so the protocol Fellowship the program that Josh mentioned where people actually become the core developers where they start working on some core projects you can see all of their work and all of their progress uh completely publicly so all of the previous cohorts we did four of them uh five of them three of them uh we were corring with Josh and then there were two previous ones so five of them already yeah um uh we um you can find uh every participant uh from IND this cohort publishing their progress you can see what they learn how they think so if you find some project that they've been working on you find it interesting you find it um that it fits into your research uh you can you can find all the materials that they've been using uh it's all documented there so uh it's also like a great collection of resources which is kind of scattered around all these participants all these um all these EPF uh fellows uh but you can you can uh take it and add it to the wiki if you find something that's missing there and so on so the the the previous CES are full of great resources uh it's uh divided into the project and the the fellows so you can find uh find a lot of stuff in there um yeah and now that's the uh uh e- uh protocol D follows uh GitHub organization EPF Wiki and uh EPF cohorts now about the discords uh we are corating this uh on the uh EPS Discord protocal studies Discord um uh if uh it's um you have the the QR code here if you want to join if you're uh not there and you somehow found this link without joining the Discord uh all of these again all of these office hours and uh the daily sessions will be discussed will be held at this Discord server so it's best to join to to be able to follow everything their life it's uh it's a place where we coordinate this if you want to uh uh use free software client to join Discord there is decent you can find it in flood flood Hab or on GitHub uh you don't need to use the proprietary frontend uh either so the Discord um is the way how we coordinate this and uh that's that's our Discord focused on this uh specific program uh you find there uh the the the study group uh uh channel uh where we uh we will discuss the daily topics and then other channels dedicated to specific topics so if you're are discussing doing research uh learning about some specific topic about I know execution L testing or some some speciic topics you can uh you can post it in that you can post it in that channel and um hopefully someone will answer so we have we have the uh the topics divided there and we also have a channel for the Vick contributors viy writers channel for people who are working on the wiki who are contributing there um and uh yeah finally the r& Discord server is a great place to be for anybody learning about a core protocol or following the current core development so the r& Discord if you are familiar with it is sort of a coordination place for all the core developers from all across all the client teams where they uh uh they announc the all C of calls you can you can follow those there but also you can see discussions again divided into various topics uh about the current uh development about the uh current state of uh uh state of issues in various domains of the core protocol so the the r& score is a great place to be especially if you want to catch up on the current stuff or just see how these uh core developers um uh uh publicly discuss the current current work so yeah yeah uh these are bunch of places to be bunch of great resources uh and uh yeah uh just to remind you if you haven't uh filled the uh study group survey please do so on this QR code it's just a quick form uh to learn about your existing knowledge about your preferences so we can tailor The Experience better uh and we get some statistics about what kind of people are interested in in uh in learning about ethereum core uh so we have yeah uh so we can uh we basically get some some input some feedback and uh we know what to focus on yeah um it's also you can find the survey also in the wiki if you haven't submitted yet and I think that's it for the presentation and now it's um uh it's your time to ask any questions if you are uh not sure about something about a program if you want to know some something about uh how the program will work anything yeah uh anything go so um feel free to feel free to raise your hand and uh and uh ask yeah if there was anything unclear or if you're curious about um uh this the schedule the structure um topics uh yeah we have uh Oscar Oscar uh V yes yeah um I was wondering is it as part of the program there would be like exercises or you know projects to implement ourselves like protocol related stuff or if it's mostly videos or articles to read so majority is the videos and articles uh but there are some exercises so if you check the um uh the existing curriculum uh some of the them uh some of them include like suggested exercises that you can do so for example there is a talk on testing and uh as an exercise you can go to the repo you can create your own tests you can uh run the specs and so on so uh there are some of the exercises like this and for the later part uh for a deep dive into execution and consensus there might be uh there might be uh more uh exercises like this uh but it's mostly just like you know you can try this out you can it's not like project to build um more just like to uh to get familiar with the with the project with the repository or uh with the uh with the tool and uh we will also do a workshop on uh running notes next week or during the first week uh for the people who never uh used etherum client you can can spin up a note and start from the basics to see how it works how you actually operate it yeah okay thanks yeah sure welcome uh yakit has a question uh hello uh so as someone who is not from the computer science background I would like to know what uh pre requirements do we we like what do we need to learn about computer science that we would need in this course uh yeah so like generally there uh the the blockchain topics uh refer to bunch of uh bunch of existing um bunch of existing Concepts like heshes merot trees uh some some like high level cryptographic knowledge uh let me send if you if you in the in the um in the EPF Wiki I'm sharing the link here uh here are some resources for uh I I'm not sure if I send the link did it send I was struggling to send links as well I don't know what's going on okay there is some problem with sending links let me send it to Discord um so in the current thread we have I opened the thread for this uh protocol studies so I open I send the resources there you can find it on the wiki uh that's uh uh that's one one start and also like uh at the beginning of uh in the in the in the every uh every um um uh every topic that we will cover uh you will see uh yeah and see here PR reading this is another thing you can read so here the prereading uh or or things uh some Basics that you should know um uh in the from the week Zero from the last year and then uh with every every daily uh session uh there is some pre-reading uh suggested uh so then before each session uh before you watch the video you see what topics you should be familiar with what other videos you can watch or with other other articles uh just to get give you some uh give you some basic basic intro um for yeah for individual topics so it's always always scheduled like uh reading what you should know before uh then structure of the of the actual lecture and then some extra materials or exercises uh that that come after so that's that's the structure yeah okay thank you sure welcome uh Tom has a question uh it's just asking like is this uh program like would be like um for example it could be like their good stter for someone who would like to build to the uh like uh the ethereum execution layer or is covered to to the consensus layer or it's just the program that make you like get to know more about ethereums right so um generally this program will get you no more uh that's the idea but will get you on the path to start contributing uh we are not here to like you know teach you the development hands on directly start contributing that's more the protocol Fellowship where people people actually start contributing working on some projects within the both execution consensus layer or road map research stuff uh or testing or so on uh but the study group um will help you to uh to prepare for contributing uh it's really then up to you to go the extra step or uh participate in the fellowship to to be able to contribute but this is like a preparation for contributing in the in the uh every part of ethereum uh consensus execution or some unfinished uh unfinished prototyping that's that's happening right now yeah so yeah hope that answers the question I got it right okay um uh V need hi thanks uh so I just wanted to understand as you mentioned the fellowship right uh so how Fellowship works and what's the criteria to qualify for the fellowship once the study grou yeah uh so yeah the fellowship uh is something independent from the study group uh it's partially connected because it this study group will help people who want to work on the fellowship but it's not necessary to uh to participate in it the fellowship generally starts around June and runs for five months till November uh so it's a FIV month program much longer than this and uh it's focused on the actual development uh so uh the the first month of the fellowship is dedicated to choosing a project there are some projects suggested by the CLI teams and some projects uh that you can come up with uh it's really up to you uh it's fully permission and open so anybody can come and uh identify a project to work on and use the next four months or the rest of the program to basically execute the project um so um the program is for people who are developers want to be developers or just are ready to do some real contribution in the in the M of the couple of months um it's um uh it's a commitment to work on this project and create some real valuable contribution and uh uh uh there it's again it's completely open and permissionless so you can see the repositories that I mentioned from the past years and uh uh some of those people they just you know they just show up in the repo and uh open a PR to add their contributions to add their U their progress um and some of those people receive a stipend uh to qualify for the stipend uh we choose uh couple of people who are most active who actually work on the projects that are U that are most valuable or uh are creating some real contributions uh so the the best couple of people uh receive a stend and we choose them based on their skills based on their pre-existing knowledge and uh some of them during the per the fellowship itself based on the the work that they do so yeah uh that's the that's the program and again you can learn about it you can see everything from the previous cohorts in the uh in the same uh in the E protocol follows uh uh uh organization GitHub yeah um yeah than sure welcome um Jimmy hi uh I wonder for the second part of the of the study group for the six week uh do like how do we choose the topics we work on or is there any like recommended or suggested topics uh come and can we team up or is there a mentor yeah yeah uh we have a we are still preparing the schedule we are still confirming the the speakers and the schedule but we will have like prepared schedule for those six weeks uh you will have sorry you will have um uh uh there will be two we uh weeks uh two calls in a week one focused on execution layer one focus on consensus uh to be precise for example the uh in the first week there will be uh evm and the Casper um uh the second week will be peer-to-peer the the networking of execution layer the peerto sorry uh death peer-to-peer on the consensus the LI peer-to-peer uh and so on and so on so we will have always these pairs of talks uh to to a to a week you can choose to follow one of the talks or both none right uh and uh you can uh you can um uh participate any way you want but we will have we will have uh this schedule Peri termin it's not published in the wiki when you open the wiki and you click on start here uh you will see the schedule for the next week then we will add the schedule for the week after and then we will add the schedule for the next uh uh uh six weeks uh because it's uh goes all the way till April and we still need to confirm the speakers for the uh uh for the for the rest of the content yeah uh so when we are sure we have it all schedu we will publish it yeah okay thank you yeah uh keal yeah hi I was wondering like this will be a development session or particular like text to mention sections I'm not sure if I understand what sessions can you can you repeat that like this will be only a development Focus sessions or more like a text contest based sessions um so uh it's focused generally on the client development but also testing and research uh mainly mainly the client architecture so you will learn uh how each of the domains of the theory protocol Works uh as I mentioned before uh we will for example one week explains how The evm Works uh how the Gasper protocol on the ex on the consensus works then how the networking STS Works how the data structures work so you will learn examples from different clients uh uh about how the uh how this part of the protocol Works which is like generally specified works the same way just implemented in a different way different clients so you will see different examples of this and the specification uh so uh so uh it's more oriented on development uh but it's not a development curse uh it's more for uh uh uh the the existing developers or people who have some understanding of the programming language to learn how this thing is specifically uh U programmed how it's implemented or uh how how it's actually uh specified in the ethereum right we are not talking just about code examples but also the specification specifications are in Python but uh it's also uh uh just uh the the actual explanation how the protocol works so even if you again if you don't want to be a developer if you don't have the if you don't know thr or some language uh you can still follow and learn how to specific work so you have like technical understanding of the of the port protocol yeah yeah hope yeah yeah yeah thank you sure thanks perfect yeah any other questions we got uh 75 people here that's awesome um yeah nothing okay yeah thank you so much for this great Unity my question is can you can you please reiterate what is it for us um maybe what's the um was it take home after the bootan because I know after after the training what is it for us how do we practically implement the things that we're learning is it just within the um space of Open Source contribution or there's something we should know I know when we get there more Enlightenment will be given to us but I just want to so how you use the knowledge after the program that's the question yeah uh so yeah um yeah right so um again it's up to you what the goal is it's uh it's really up to you how you see your goal whether you just want to educate yourself uh you want to understand something and uh you can become an educator afterwards right uh you can uh you can um uh use the skills to uh contribute to some part of the ethereum that you're interested in and again it's vast uh there are different there are like 20 different teams working on ethereum uh there are the client teams on the execution and consensus uh there are different research teams there is testing there's devops um uh there are different layer two teams and uh Forks of ethereum which are using copying the same stack we are going to be talking about right because it's all open they just take the the same technology so um you can apply this knowledge uh across all the evm ecosystem across all of the ethereum related projects um uh you can you can spread this knowledge uh and uh uh specifically speaking we are going to be starting the EPF uh somewhat shortly after the the study group so uh this will get you on a good track to start also the EPF Fellowship um uh but uh if you are uh if you're uh confident in your skills if you if you learn a lot during the study group you can uh just go ahead and start um contributing right ahead like again we have the wiki which is one place to contribute to help us to build the documentation so uh even with your like uh uh without any development skills just with the the technical writing you can help us a lot you can you can help to uh contribute to documentation like like EPF weki or ethereum.
org uh is also a public public repository you can contribute to uh with some developer documentation um and then uh if you feel confident enough you can start with some some tasks on the clients themselves but this is this is what we help uh help you with in the fellowship if you feel like making a commitment to work on a project for a couple of months uh you can continue doing the fellowship um and uh uh what I would add is that we have there are people from last year like uh I don't know a couple of people uh three or four at least uh who started uh this study group uh basically from Z hero um like they did have uh very deep insight into ethereum they started following since the since the uh the first week and they uh finished uh the fellowship in November and get hired or wanted to be hired in the clan teams uh so in less than one year they be they became core developers um uh we will have maybe some testimonials later but I think like four or five people yeah I can I can think of four right away uh who've been uh who been who did the project in the EPF so they did some meaningful contribution for months and some of them have been so so great that uh they just get hired right away uh some of them uh didn't want to be hired or continue to work on some project so there is yeah there are many uh many stories like that but it's really up to you and your own dedication your own skills uh what you are willing to do we give you this opportunity to learn and this platform for you to participate in uh but uh yeah it's up to you how you how you use it yeah um okay Tom has a question yeah I I just have another question so uh this does the content will cover the meong the meong like the meong fox because like currently the meong fox if I remember currently like is C to until to the native account abstraction in ethereum or something like that so basically like how with like so you can tell me in the EIP versions like which EIP that that this will cover for example um so yeah uh the uh the sessions will be focused on parts of the protocol which includes some eips and the relevant APS will be mentioned in the resources so again if you check the existing materials you can see that when we talk about I don't know networking stack uh we mention like the uh relevant Network related eips right uh and then uh there will be talks on research and road map where uh and pectra current upgrades right where we talked about specific eips which are being mented right now but generally when we talk about protocol or the specification uh we refer to the existing specification rather than the individual eips the problem is that you know eips are kind of scattered all over the place uh they're like uh uh they don't give you the whole picture so so we refer more to uh uh to the um uh the specification or the some documentation of the of the protocol uh yeah um hope that makes sense okay thanks uh yeah Lis has a question yeah uh on Fellowship must I work only in the project that already exist or could I create a new project to work on yeah you can comp uh absolutely bring uh come come up with your own project uh so these are all projects which need to be somehow related in the core protocol so it's the clients themselves or the testing or the uh tooling around it uh right um and uh again we have suggestions from the client teams where they directly tell you this is something that we need help with in the coming months this is something that can you can work on uh but if you learn about the protocol if you if you identify some some gaps by yourself that's something that you are interested in you can just suggest the pro the project yourself yeah okay thank you yeah sure in the previous fellowships you can see that in the in the repositories you can see the project ideas uh uh in the in the project directory in each uh each of the previous cohorts you can check the cohort D5 uh the the project directory has the projects uh ideas MD file where you can see uh what was proposed uh by the by the mentors and then you can compare it to the all of the other projects you see some of them got implemented some of them did not and some came completely from the follows I would say it's like 7030 or so yeah yeah cool um yeah any anything else any other questions we still have time to to answer anything about the the study group and the core protocol and the fellowship uh the schedule feel free to ask um I would maybe just add that um Al someone is speaking Yeah about the story group when uh we we will share a a schedule like with the class I don't know so so you can see the schedule for the next week uh up um let me share it oh wait there is doesn't share the link again uh if you just click on uh EPF we start here and program structure schedule you can see it here the week one is there scheduled uh daily um so yeah this is what I wanted to to say actually so starting on Monday uh we are starting the the study group um uh in the uh in uh uh the schedule you can see the day February 17 we are going to do intro to the ethereum protocol it's a presentation from me when you click on it uh you see the it's called week one from the uh previous uh see the prereading there the prehistory of uh uh ethereum protocol design like all of these uh all of these topics and that that continues with each day basically so the second day we will talk about the consensus layer the two third day about execution layer and the same day uh we will have the workshop on actually running the conss and execution client so from the theoretical part we will get to the Practical you will actually try it yourself and then we finish the week with testing in security for the second week we will release the schedule suit so you can see the the schedule for the next week there I hope you you got it yeah uh yeah AJ think a AJ has a question and if you're speaking you're muted okay okay anyone anyone else um I hope everything is clear um again if you do have questions that come up after this Town Hall you can feel free to drop them in the Discord and and we'll get to them yes uh yeah very well yeah uh we have the uh we have the study group um uh channel in the Discord uh we will always open uh the daily threads there to discuss that daily topic so feel free to uh drop any questions there uh so so now the next steps um or the plan is that on Monday um on Monday we will open the thread for uh for the uh for the day uh where we share the resources uh for the first day uh you can uh take your time to watch the video to study the existing resources to read uh to read the uh read uh the documentation and then um uh we will hold at 3 p.m. UTC um we will have the town hall uh sorry the office hours will be available for you in the Discord uh chat in the voice chat uh to come to talk to us to ask any questions that you are unsure about the um about the um uh uh uh uh daily topic about the uh introduction to the protocol yeah the on the Monday the first day will be like a map of the protocol and history of it like a general ideas just to get you started bit uh just to give you a context and then the second day we'll dive into how the consensus actually works also with some introduction into like how the blockchains work and and the third day will be more technical into how the uh execution actually works uh from the um like some uh uh specification perspective yeah yeah so yeah I guess I'll see you on Monday if there are no more questions uh if we are finished here um oh yeah so sorry for taking you back again I just want little Clarity so this um training that we'll be having I think if I if I heard you clearly you said it's a preparation that um we can have um maybe for the ethereum protocol Fellowship you spoke about um the the program itself that this is not this is not the main program there's there's the EPF program itself so this is just like a pre-training if I get you correct well sort of uh it's sort of a pre-training but I wouldn't uh I wouldn't uh like dishonor it by saying it's not a main program or so like the the uh for the depends on again what your goal is um for the people who are really feeling about becoming the core developers the main part will be the EPF uh uh but this is as important as the EPF like to learn to learn to be able to do it uh for people who just want to learn and uh like increase their knowledge increase their skills uh and write documentation and so on it's uh uh it's still very important program but uh generally yeah the the Assumption you have is is correct uh this is uh the training and then the executive Port comes in the EPF uh but again it doesn't mean that you need to do one or another it's not directly it's somewhat connected uh you can do both I mentioned examples of people who started with the study group and ended with the EPF became core developers became uh became active contributors now um uh uh but um it doesn't mean that you need to do all of it uh it's really up to you whether you want to take this whole journey or you just want to uh maybe in the in this study group you can just see what's up you can just see what what we are even dealing with uh uh to to understand whether this is something for you uh whether you are able to do this right so uh so this is sort of like University and then the uh uh the um uh Fellowship is more like a apprenticeship yeah used to be called like that but we not talking about that um yeah um yeah um hope hope it's clear uh hope it's clear now and um and anything else yeah uh yeah Kelvin hi hi everyone so my question has to do with um a few points you mentioned you did talk about not being a CS graduate and also being a developer so I just wanted to ask do you be a CS graduate to go ahead with this study group and if you are a developer do you have to attain some level of experience something like that uh right so uh for the for this protocal study group um there is like the the uh CS knowledge is a great addition it's a great help uh it's definitely help you to uh study faster uh but it's not the hard requirement even if you are starting with like only general knowledge uh without strong background you can still catch up you can still set stud their materials and you can still learn a lot um um I'm I'm a CS Dropout I'm not a CS graduate and I managed to learn about ethereum a lot just because uh I have this uh interest I have this mindset I'm able to learn about it I'm able to study what I need to understand in order to understand ethereum right so so that's the that's the goal here like we want to provide the materials for everybody uh not just the Cs people not just the developers uh but again if you are a developer if you are um uh some computer science graduate you will have easier time uh diving into this because you are familiar with many existing terms uh but it's still necessary because e theum is very specific we have many of our own terminology our own uh protocols so uh there is still a lot to learn and um uh no matter where we come from and um uh uh yeah and then again like it depends what your goal is like if you have some develop developer skills or if you want to become a developer this is a great way to start like just generally I believe that like to learn development in general free and open source software is a great place to be because instead of like some madeup exercises in the University you actually contribute to some meaningful things and exercise your skills like this um so uh and and you you learn uh from the best you learn great practices from people who've been developing ethereum itself right um so again like to uh to to even to like work on your skills uh to um uh to start whether from it's zero or from some pre-existing knowledge like we are we are here for everyone [Applause] here yeah um yeah uh D yeah do you have a question [Applause] okay um Emanuel okay can you hear me all right okay everybody um thank you for the presentation so my my question would be um I'd love to know if there would be like handson exercises after like a session in the boot in the boot camp oh yeah so some of the sessions include exercises some of those uh where it makes sense there are uh exercises suggested from the mentors um but not all of them um so uh we will try to uh to uh especially with the musicians we will try to uh push for some uh exercises but generally you know it's um it's not really um a skill that we are practicing it's more of a knowledge where you try to understand how this uh protocol works or how how this specific uh function works and then uh what you can do is uh like go try to change something and recompile it or so right so it's more um there there is not like specific exercises that we can give in many of these sessions it's uh some of them included as I mentioned like testing we will have to workshop on notes uh but bunch of them are just uh more about learning and then uh uh like what I would suggest or in some of the sessions you will find the suggestions like go to the good first issues tag and uh uh you can you can see what are the good first issues in this project in this repository you get familiar with it you feel that you understand enough to uh try something so you can try Implement some good first issue yeah um or just to do some change and uh uh yeah there will be some exercises but it's not not mainly exercise oriented yeah again it's up to you how much you want to study and what what way of studying you prefer you can uh uh uh you can really uh uh uh do it yourself yeah uh yeah Joshi hello thank you for hosting this whole program in this call I a couple people asked about exercises and I wanted to share that I'm also a very exercise oriented learner and so as I go along studying and learning with you guys I will like helplessly be trying to think of exercises that I'd like to do and you know I think anyone can do that and we can you know share any good ones that we come up with so I wanted to just say don't uh don't just sit and wait for the te like you know teachers or whatever to come up with them feel free to to dive in on your own too and and I'd love to work with anyone who likes to do exercises too because I also like to do exercises yeah perfect thank you so much for that that's amazing exactly what I mentioned like uh we are a community we work together we learn together so if you have any questions any struggles if you come up with exercises pleas please share all of this uh help each other to learn uh and yeah let's collaborate on this it's amazing thank you so much uh yeah um yeah emuel yeah he um just as um can you hear me yes so as Joshy said I'd love to connect with Joshy because I'm a very um exercise oriented kind of [Music] larer so I'd love to connect you yeah yeah totally uh so in uh in the Discord please like uh you know feel free to uh send a GM there in the GM Channel introduce yourself uh and uh then during the during the each uh day we will open the uh the thread uh dedicated to the topic and uh share your exercises there share your uh questions your knowledge there or uh join us in the uh in the voice channel uh if you want to discuss something um yeah um so uh so uh uh then like feel free to connect with people uh in the Discord uh Channel like that's the that's the easiest way if this becomes something that's becomes pretty popular we would likely just also create a channel directly for like exercise creation probably where you guys can collaborate in in doing that um yeah again like uh this is all we are all friends it's all open Community uh we can uh do suggestions in the uh Discord we have server suggestions channel uh if you have suggestion for a new channel like for exercises or something else you can feel free to uh feel free to send a suggestion there app um if we do any any um uh any think yeah mandms you're waiting with the question yeah um I just wanted to ask you you mentioned that um after the study group people went to the uh fellowship and I feel like you mentioned around five people made it to like stien position but what do you think was the the the largest or the hardest obstacle that uh the participants experience throughout the program um which hindered them to finish the program like what was the was the largest or obstacle in your experience yeah yeah so this is a question on them right I wasn't a participant I'm organizing it so uh it's like their subjective perspective what I can suggest you um uh so yeah two things uh first like if if I'm supposed to answer the question I would say it's the dedication uh just keeping the motivation uh keeping uh uh keeping keeping going right whether it's a study group uh just uh being able to continue go on I'll learn more and show up for every meeting and um uh then also the EPF like doing the commitment and really executing on it really just uh have the have the dedication have the motivation to stay around many people just drop out because they they lose interest or I mean they're busy with other things they get sick like there are ton of reasons of course um but like generally I don't believe that there is like a technical problem like if there if you have some issue you need help with there are people here as the mentors to get you through it um so so it's really up to you to be able to dedicate the time and have the motivation to go through it but what I would suggest you is to ask them that directly uh we just tagged a couple of people in Discord uh from the active people from the um uh uh uh from the um uh previous uh study group from the cord 5 we tagged like five people there you can uh you can ask them directly also they will be available on some of these calls uh throughout the study group uh and also you can find uh we could share that but you can find it in the defone archive uh in the EPF day uh you find presentations oh I we forgot about that actually as a part of resources um uh you can find presentations of uh everyone who participated in the uh in this uh the the the cohort and we also have a a panel with some previous participants with some previous fellows where we talk about um not technical things but more of their like their experience as the fellow and also finish what to do after the fellowship what I do afterward uh so um uh so uh you can you can you can check out the panel I think maybe joshu will share it we find the link and share it here it's at the defon archive yeah and I think I lost Josh here thank you um yeah sorry you're welcome there okay you're here okay no worries yeah oh yeah uh if you haven't been around during the merch you might not remember but bordal WTF is this website where we track when the merge is supposed to happen yeah it's the old hacker space that I use the domain uh when we were doing it during the merch yeah it's um that's part of the the introduction on Monday ethereum history don't talk about hard for as much but yeah um yeah I think we're already a few minutes over here so we can wrap it up uh thanks for being here everybody if you have further questions uh that you think of throughout the day or week or whatever before uh we get started on Monday please go ahead and put them in the Discord server uh looking forward to having a great study group year with you all and um yeah we'll see you on Monday yeah we will see you on Monday and hopefully couple of uh weeks afterwards as well uh please like make sure to dedicate some time for the next week hope you will uh have the spare time couple of hours a day to focus on this during next week and uh yeah we'll see you we'll see you soon thanks everyone have a great day byebye [Applause] a for
