[Music] so um I I am giving a talk and one of the reasons I'm being slightly hyper here is because it sounds kind of boring but it's actually really interesting um which is internet standards as public goods uh as uh as was said I work at the Falin Foundation one of my jobs is to worry about the public goods that need to exist for um decentralized systems not just filecoin but our entire entire wild uh wild and wooly ecosystem to uh survive and communicate and interoperate operate um in the early days of our first model for a public good like this uh the internet um uh the standards drove pretty much the entire description of the process right uh the internet is nothing but a series of of Standards um and one of the uh one of the slogans there it didn't come from Satoshi it didn't come from the cipher punks it came from Dave Clark who was the I think the chair of the internet architecture board who says uh we don't believe in presidents we don't believe in voting uh we believe in rough consensus and working code and if that's not a kind of description of how we expect public goods to be created um I don't know what is but the question here is is like well that's been that was a radical act 20 or 30 years ago uh are the existing standards bodies uh the ITF the w3c um I can in its own way um all of these groups are they the right shape for uh the standards that perhaps we will we will be building in this this this new era um and if not do we need to create new ones and most importantly how do we fund all of this uh a question that they've struggled with and I think we'll struggle with with so I'm having a little workshop to talk through some of the history and get some ideas from this community about how we can uh we we can be the uh uh as interoperable and as Global uh a system as uh as the core internet is today I'm rayan um my workshop's going to be significantly less uh thoughtful and wise I really liked what Natalie said about changing culture that's actually like kind of the key of what I'm trying to get at with this Workshop um I think there's there's things to like and not like about how climate has uh evolved and how that market has evolved but I think there are lessons to be learned there right there are like and one of the things that is different there is that like the culture is different and it does like change consumer Behavior which does ultimately change how Enterprises and companies work so we do buy things that are sustainable or very fair trade or organic we have Notions of what does it mean to be a sustainable company we don't really have that notion um in in open source software and and in SAS like imagine a world where we actually made decisions based on whether or not the companies that we're supporting um actually are sustainable to the ecosystem and and help support public goods in a healthy way like what would that look like how can we learn from these lessons um it's also true in the climate industry that like things like you know buy this product remove a thousand bottles from the ocean these types of things actually can form core thesises for a company and shape customer Behavior like we buy different things based on that and these are basically Advanced Market commitments or profit sharing agreements that companies put in place that actually are important to both their identity and their ability to make sales and then there's carbon markets and you know there's you can get fully nerd sniped by the crazy ideas of what would happen if we actually had an impact market for public goods um and so uh I don't have zero answers to any of these questions um but I'm hoping if people are interested yeah we can Workshop these things together and start to start to Define what a sustainable look like how do we change consumer Behavior what are things that would uh appeal to these companies and how can we uh move the culture forward [Music]
